HOI4 Dev Diary - PdxCon Recap and Team update

More AI programmers to the frontline on HOI4... Man... for me that makes up for Finland ;) . I am really looking forward to the AI upgrades coming in the next DLC and where fresh eyes can take it.

I just hope the Eastern Front does not become too troubling... so please take your time and deliver a DLC that can blast WTT off of its perch as best DLC.

EDIT: Please do a once over though for all AI regardless of country.

Italian trains would be immune tho since they always run on time ;P

I suspect we will wanna keep doing at least more fixes similar to what we did with Yugoslavia in BFTB to keep stuff hummin'

Sadly not. could probably assemble it from old posts I have made, but percentages dont tell the whole story. a % can go down because we just get more players even if that mod also got more players etc.

For a detailed updated roadmap I tend to wait until after each expansion is out. I cant remember if air changes are on that one, but its been discussed a few times internally among the things we think could be improved
I suspect TfV need a bit more love than just some minor fixes. Most of the Commonwealth is pretty weak, especially if deciding to go alone than remain with Britain. Many features such as increased conscription etc. are locked behind a lot of foci which are in turn gated behind WT thresholds or even needing to be at war first.

since you invited us to speculate about the soviet tree I do believe there will only be communist paths (maybe a democratic socialism as democracy one as well) as I see no mutually exclusive branch to the marxist one.

This is a huge undertaking that changes a lot of key components of the game, especially the AI. This has been a major reason for waiting with Soviet. We needed to build up both ai stability and get a new partisan system in place and have time to rework supply etc etc, so its the culmination of a long plan towards this goal and its nice to see it coming together.
So, this was part of a long-term plan. Hoi4 was released in 2016. Tell me, was No Step Back part of your five-year plan?

will you guys be working on fixing existing bugs in the game in the near or far future? stuff like Transylvania, Austria-Hungary, Bessarabia, china, and even spain are still bugged. would love to see quality of life improvements in the future. I can provide a list of bugs i have found if you'd like.
I know Podcat already answered this, but it's a good opportunity for your regular reminder: you can vote for bugs you want fixed in the Bug Report subforum. Click on the arrow in the top right hand corner of the screen:

The devs do appear to take these votes into account when deciding which bugs to fix.

Every time a new DLC is announced I think "finally! this would be the perfect opportunity to fix the peace conference system!". However, now I take it that there's no plans to include a revamp in this upcoming patch+dlc. This has been my #1 hope since release, but I guess I'm alone on this or maybe just way more people are playing big multiplayer games. But for me, no matter how much fun I have in a game, the peace conferences always manage to ruin it for me so much that I quit.

HoI4 games take so long to play that I hardly ever see the peace conference screen.....

the British usually roll over Lybia like it is nothing (sometimes it's Italy that takes the Suez pretty easily, as well as take Central Africa through Ethiopia).

Will the new supply system make these fronts more like stalemates like they were in real-life?

Describing the North African front as a "stalemate" is confusing. It wasn't like the trenches in the First World War. The front line was static when both sides were regrouping, but moved dramatically during offensives.

I expect we're basically in agreement though: managing supply in the deserts of North Africa should be a big part of fighting a campaign there. It looks like the new supply mechanics could make that happen if the AI is written properly.

Any info you have on how doctrine research bonuses will be affected by the new doctrine system? Will it work by reducing army xp cost or are they completely replaced with for example a bonus of army xp? Haven't seen anyone else bring this up so I thought I'd ask.

Well, it sort of was a stalemate. There was no real progress being made by either side for most of the campaign. It was mostly a back and forth around the areas of Benghazi and Tobruk. The Axis temporarily managed to break this status quo when they pushed to El Alamein, where a stalemate truly set in (no back and forth here). Then a few months later Operation Torch happened and the Axis were swiftly pushed out of North Africa.

But we really are in agreement. Supplies were and important part of the campaign and made really hard for either side to make a breakthrough.

It is possible that we will see a rework in general to the internal politics of the countries and diplomacy in general since I currently believe they are one of the mechanics with the most deficiencies in the game

The concept of internal politics I mean a generalization of a factions system similar to the one we saw in the last country pack, also implementation of a subideology system, or some bicephaly system in power for some countries such as democratic states or certain states like Japan or also insert some more law like the educational system etc ...

I also think it is necessary to reworke the general diplomacy system that currently feels barely useful for players in most of their options.

Are there any changes to how front lines work in general upcoming?

At the moment lets say you have a grouping of Infantry, Tanks and Mountain troops assigned to a single front line and the front line covers an area that has Mountain / Plains / Forest. There should be a way to force your mountain troops to the Mountain provinces, Tanks to Plains and Inf to the forest Etc.

I like the idea of the front line but the way its deployed in game I do not like. I micro 100% of my units in combat but this is a huge issue of mine.

maybe i am bit late but i ll start playing HOI IV !!! i d love to have some advises and hints cause i really love that game i was just overwhelmed by Stellaris and then CK 3 but now i wanna really enjoy playing HOi IV , i ll have a shy start but i ll start playing it =)

Umm, some talk about the team growing, reorganising team branches and the game engine about to reach the end of capacities... if i got that right.

I smell a big thing with a number "5" printed on it. Certainly not within the next two years (think of Vicky 3 requiring more than two years to emerge out of mere shrouded mystery) but foundation work might slowly start in the background...
