it's total trade power, so includes both trade power from ships and local trade power. If you hold onto Normandy it's quite easy, remember to make the CoT lv2 at least

If you get very close to 85% but not quite there, you can embargo people like Holland and Flandres, even if they're not your rivals. It'll lower your trade income a bit, but not your share of the node, and it will reduce theirs.

My answer is, Colonies, Merchants, and Ships.

Merchants funnelling trade home provide you with +10% trade power bonus in your home node (so long as you only collect trade there).
Each colony over 10 provinces provides 1 merchant, and +5% global trade power, which is +15% trade power total in your home node.

Trade ships increase in base power as the game progresses from 2 (barques) to eventually 5(Great Frigates). Fleet trade power can be multiplied again by a burger privilege, a naval doctrine, admirals (+5% per maneouvre pip), and policies (Trade/Naval).

A big trading fleet is very....historical, as Britain.

Conquering the surrounding territory works too though ;)

Have fun.

If you send a merchant to collect in your home node, you don't lose the first bonus you mentioned right.
And yeh, controlling trade upstream increases trade power downstream. Control the channel also requires the Channel to have grown in size iirc

Don't forget to improve the trade centres that sit around the channel node - they're a very easy way to bump up your %s.

A tip I was given by someone here - make a trade power flagship, and put an admiral with high manoever in it - this imrpoves your light ship trade power no end.

Easiest way to get the most trade power is to just conquer all provinces in the English channel. Should be easy enough as gb.

I wouldn't bother to much with colonizing as you can just annex Castile and portugal later to get their colonies

You can occupy in war instead of actually annexing all

The Lowland English Channel CoTs are all in the HRE but also under PU with Burgundy meaning you can declare on Burgundy and peace out for those provinces without drawing the emperor in. Apart from increasing mercentilism can help and trade ships but mainly after you get the tech for tier 2 trade ships.

Transfer age ability let's you net two of the 3, but best course is allying burgundy and restarting until burgundian inheritance fires your way. If allied to Austria then they can't declare war for the lowlands

How often does burgundy rival you in games, cuz you could just save scum until burgundy picks you
Well ive not played Britain since emperor but if you save scum burgundy when you can get france in a pu really easily anyway than why even play at that point?
You're just giving yourself half of western Europe
