Why does my Dissent go through the roof (0 to 20+ %) as soon as Japan sneak attacks me at Pearl Harbor?? Hostile news media? You'd think that would be a unifying event. They're attacking me all over the place, and my people want to lynch me. I even have rebellions. Anyone know? This must have come up before.

Thanks.

I think it's CNN.

So, I should be moving that diplomatic slider away from isolationism, I assume. I've been ignoring that. When they attack, they really attack though. They go all out for the Philippines. I like that. I wasn't prepared for it. In HOI3, they made a half hearted attempt and then left it alone. I'll start another game.

Thanks.

Much of DH is trial and error.

Shock and uncertainty. I'm American and remember 9/11 clearly. We were all in shock and uncertain what would happen next both in terms of another attack but also what kind of military retaliation. But the unity followed. I haven't played the US in DH in many many years, but I'm sure you get events and decisions that will reduce the dissent.

As already written, balance is probably what was intended here - after all, dissent has a direct effect on IC output. With the peacetime modifier gone some dissent is useful to make sure your military production won't skyrocket overnight. With some IC devoted to consumer goods to reduce dissent one could obtain a more progressive, natural growth. However, revolts are a clearly unwanted side effect here.

I see the need for it for balance reasons. Even historical reasons. The US was flattened for a time. We couldn't immediately start cranking out massive numbers of tanks, planes, ships and trained troops. I just neglected to pay enough attention to that game mechanic. I'm really enjoying DH so far. It's extremely well done.

These trial and error things are actually a plus to me. The game has depth and a high level of historical reality to it. For example-I like the way the AI eliminates a number of US ships after the Pearl Harbor attack. I used to do that myself when playing HOI3 & 4.

I thank everyone for the replies.

IIRC; there was broad unity following PH, as the peace movement vanishes and nationalist movements are crippled. Dissent would have been very small from that. The US government balancing act before PH was for pushing the European war over on a largely isolationist American public. After PH the USA prioritized Europe first over Japan, the country that actually attacked PH, and had to deal with justifying that policy domestically.

I have two Dissent related questions.

When the dissent gets high enough there is a coup in US.
Is the radical faction options random or always Communist or Socialist?

Will partisan rebels change the government or build anything if I let them take over the country on purpose?

Partisans dont build units. What they will do eventually, assuming they take enough key territory, is form its own faction, usually a premade one, already at war with you.

I've been pumping dissent into the mid 80s to see what would happen. If the revolutions keep cycling and how, and if the partisans will do anything. I guess they need all the cores for some country before declaring independence and them getting the capital won't do anything.
