September 1080

Phillipe took a generous chug of wine, he was certainly in the mood for merriment this night, here in his private chambers, with his siblings. The wine, and roaring fire gave him a warm feeling that made him even more friendly than usual. His brother picked up him own goblet and proclaimed,”I propose a toast, to our sister, the future Duchess of Aquitaine.”
As their three goblets clanked together Phillipe marveled at the circumstances that led to the betrothal,”Of course mother accompanied me to Bordeaux to find a proper suitor for Adele, she is now slated to wed the heir to the wealthiest and largest duchies in the realm.” Of course, Phillipe was pleased by the political ramifications as well, for by marrying the king’s half-sister, Guilhem de Poitou’s loyalty was secured. He looked over to Adele, who had also only taken a small sip of wine and teased her,”I hear your betrothed is a handsome boy, is he not?”
The girl blushed a little,”Yes he I suppose you could say that Phillipe.”

Prince Hugues interjected,”Good, I hope that you will be happy in your role there;”
Adele nodded,”I think I will be, of course I will be sad to be leaving Picardie but I’m sure I’ll be able to still see mother and everyone else.”
Phillipe gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder,”Of course you will, and when it comes time for Emma to leave for Castile it gives me comfort that you will be able to easily visit with one another.”
“Hopefully the realm will be more peaceful by then as well.”
The king nodded at this,”I would hope so, the Waldensians are determined but we have crushed them time and time again, and we beat back the Infidel from Leon as well.”

Soon enough the siblings refilled their goblets, and performed another toast, with Prince Hugues exclaiming,”To peace in the realm!”
Almost as soon as they took their first sips, there was a desperate series of knocks on the door, and though Phillipe felt like cursing he kept a pleasant look on his face,”Come in, if you are interrupting us at this hour it must be something important.”
It indeed seemed to be important, for the courier's clothes and blonde hair were disheveled, and as he stumbled into the room he cave a hasty bow,”My apologies your majesty, but I have grave news: the Waldensians have risen again in Macon!”

Does Robert wish to sponsor a s'more party after his friend, Louis, provided the fuel for a hot dog roast?

It would seem that he does, and that he will soon join his compatriot. Thank you very much for your comment, it was really amusing.

It certainly seems like it is, Phillipe has been dragged into war after war, and hopefully after this one there can be peace. Thank you so much for commenting!

Phillipe smirked as he watched the seen unfold before him, a rotten apple hitting the chained man in the face, causing him to fall to his knees, like the pathetic insect he was. Another apple hit the man as he tried to get back up, this one in the shoulder, and he feel to the ground on his side. To his side he heard a woman’s hearty laugh and his wife regarded him with a smirk,”My ancestors had inventive ways to take care of such swine.”
Phillipe nodded a little,”What were they?”
Ingrid spoke with great enthusiasm “Well, there was the blood eagle. What they would do is cut a captured man’s back open, separate their ribs from their back with a knife, and then rip the ribs and lungs out to make the man look as if he had wings, a fitting punishment for their foes.”
Ingrid’s brother, Erik, who had just happened to have been visiting for the winter rolled his eyes,”Are you sure they really did that sister? It seems to me that they made it up to scare their enemies.”
“Even so it is a brilliant idea.”
Phillipe chuckled at their banter, they did not always get along, but Phillipe had insisted that Erik visit, and he surprised the man the week before by presenting him with a beautifully engraved sword, it was the first time he had saw the Danish Prince smile since he arrived in late January, for their mother could not accompany him to France as she was feeling unwell.

Soon enough the prisoner was locked in the stock, where many members of the crowd jereed at him, and continued to throw insults and rotten fruit alike at him. Phillipe looked to his brother-in-law,”You are about to see how I handle those who dare to flout the laws of my kingdom.” After a rotten pear hit the prisoner, giving him a black eye, Philip ordered him dragged to the scaffold, where a large stake of wood sat upon a mound of hay and wood. As the man was tied to the stake of wood, Phillipe rose from his chair on the balcony, of the building, the home of a deceased childless merchant that Phillipe had bought for this specific reason.: Watching the burning of heretics. The executioner looked up at the King as he held his torch, unsure of what to do. Phillipe responded with a simple nod, and the man set the torch down on the hay, causing flames to shoot up , as the heretic stood silent, perhaps hoping to deny his kingthe satisfaction of protests. The flames licked up the pyre, and the man started to scream in agony, Phillipe looked to the crowd that was watching the execution,”This here is to be an example, to any heretic who seeks to cause discord in my realm, should anyone rise up in such a way against the laws of god and my kingdom, I shall cleanse the realm of their presence through fire.”
He paused as the man’s screams grew louder, as the flames started to immolate his mid-section and Phillipe announced,”This may not be pleasant, but it is necessary my people, for allowing this heretic to live puts our immortal souls at risk of damnation, far better to let this man suffer bodily, than for us all to suffer the fires of hell.”
Soon enough the man’s cries ended, and all that was left of the latest challenge to Phillipe’s rule was a pile of ash.

How many siblings does Ingrid have? Is the Danish royal family in prison? While Ingrid's blood eagle has great merit, when you are "The Cleansing Flame", you must host marshmallow roasts. Hopefully, we will have another misguided vassal offer to host a barbeque soon. Preferably a landowner who would like help managing his property.

I'm not sure, i think she has about 10 half siblings and one full sibling. I believe that icon means they are in seclusion because of a pandemic(Though Erik visited before the pandemic in the story). Haha, yes, there will be plenty of roasts in the Kingdom of France. As for executing landowners, I'm not sure if Phillipe would, for fear of the repercussions, but he would certainly seize titles if he could without being viewed as a tyrant. Thank you very much!

You see it's not dramatic enough for Phillipe to simply behead heretics, he is all about the theatrics of ruling. Thank you so much for input!

Phillipe had allowed his mind to wonder for just a moment, and his daydreaming was soon cut short by the slap of skin on skin. His wife stood mere inches away from the young woman, her hand drawn back from the slap with a sneer on her face,”Tell me who hired you to attempt the vile act or I swear you will die in utter agony!”
The chambermaid started crying, her face in her palms, and pleaded,”Please, have mercy on me, I can’t tell you or he’ll kill me!”

Ingrid grabbed a sword that was leaning against the wall and shoved the other woman against the wall, steel nearly touching the woman’s throat,”IF YOU DON'T TELL ME WHO PAID YOU TO TRY AND KILL MY SON I WILL KILL YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY YOU WRETCH”

The other woman gasped for air, and her eyes bulged,”It was Henri, the Duke of Burgundy, please forgive me!”

Ingrid backed away, allowing the woman to fall to the floor, and looked towards her husband,”Now we know who paid her, what shall we do with her?”
Phillipe was hesitant to do answer this question, and instead addressed the chamber maid in a commanding voice,”I will spare your life, but you are to leave this palace, and if you ever step foot in here again you will lose your head!”
As a guard escorted the maid out of the room, Ingrid crossed her arms together and glared at Phillipe,”Why would you let her live? She was a traitor who would have killed our only son!”

Phillipe met her gaze, willing to draw her ire by standing by his decision, as her mother’s death two months ago had made her increasingly testy,“Because she told us who hired her, do you realize that if she was executed it would be a sign to the Duke that his plot was discovered? By doing this the Duke is less likely to be aware of our actions against him.”
Ingrid furrowed her brow, but seemed to understand her husband’s decision,”Will you have him killed then?”
The king shook his head,”No, I wish I could, but such a plot would take too much time, time in which he could hire more agents for his own scheme. Instead I shall have him arrested, and then decide what will be done with him from there.”
“I only hope that your men can catch him, he is a slimy bastard.”

Phillipe nodded,”I hopes so too, but I will be prepared to raise my armies should it be required.”He embraced his wife, and gave her a passionate kiss, a hand running down her backside,”I would have you join my in my bed tonight if you wish, first I must discuss the matter of Burgundy with my council.”

Ingrid smirked, and pinched his chest,”Good, it will be fun. To think that my brother was willing to give up the benefits of married life to be a bishop…”

Phillipe grinned,”Yes it will be my dear, but the threat of Burgundy must be addressed first.”

One hour later…

Phillipe was alone in his chambers, his voice hoarse from cursing, so he chugged the tiny amount of wine left in his goblet, and as he throw it at the wall he shouted,”DAMN THEM!”

He sat there, on the floor panting for a moment, trying to suppress his anger. After several minutes, his rage finally subsided, and he walked a few paces to pick the goblet off of the floor, and as he grasped the cool metal he scoffed and thought to himself,”Is it too much to ask to imprison a man for trying to have my son and heir killed?”

He knew the answer should have been an emphatic no, but the latest council meeting indicated otherwise, with only the Duke of Aquitaine voting with the king to arrest Burgundy. Those who voted not to have Duke Henri arrested answered with the most ludicrous of justifications, that imprisoning a man of such high standing, who was also a cousin of the king, would cause chaos throughout the realm. Phillipe had postured the question of how stable the realm would be if the heir to the throne was murdered? Naturally none of the councilors were willing to formulate a meaningful response to this, but their votes remained. Soon enough Phillipe stood outside the door, his appearance neat as ever and he opened the door, where a servant stood some distance away, who asked,”Is everything alright your majesty?”
Phillipe smirked,”Better than ever, would you please direct the bishop of Fleury to my chambers so that we may discuss some important matters?”
The servant bowed,”Of course your majesty.”

Phillipe turned back to the door, and as he reentered his chambers he shook his head,”I hope that the rest of this day proves more productive.”

Minutes later…

Phillipe was sitting at his chair, looking a beautifully ornated copy of the bible, reading over the Latin translation of the old testament, when there was a knock at the door, and he smiled to himself,”Come in.”

As the door opened he stood up, bible in his hand and gave the Bishop of Fleury a broad smile, a fake smile,”Ah, Bishop Archambaud, I am glad to see you.”
The red-maned man nodded, smiling a little,”Likewise your majesty, what matter is it that required my prescence?”

Phillipe smirked, his voice dripping with sarcasm,”I wished to discuss Theology with you my good Bishop, tell me, are you famillar with god’s commandment that thou shall not kill?”
The confused man gave the king a simple answer,”Yes.”
Phillipe then set the book down onto his desk, and with great violence grabbed the other man by the shoulders and shoved him against the wall, who fell to the fell protesting,”Why would you do this to me?!”
Phillipe’s smile turned into a sneer, and he laughed bitterly,”Because you would let Henri of Burgundy, a man who tried to kill my only son keep his freedom. That alone shall damn you to the fires of Hell. As if that isn’t enough, I hear you spent more time being serviced by whores in Macon, then in trying to convert the heretics there. As such your services as court chaplain are no longer required.”

The bishop got to his feet, and angrily replied,”I am man of God, do not be a fool, the Holy Father shall hear of such insolence.”
The king glared at the other man,”Then he will also hear of your lechery, then we can see whose actions he disapproves of more!”
The other man grunted,”That will not be necessary your majesty, though it pains me, I must accept that I will no longer be your Chaplain.”

“Good, then see yourself out!”

The Bishop all but rushed out the door, slamming it on the way out, and Phillipe chuckled to himself,”It is time that I removed that false man of God, and replace him with a better man.”

One day later…

Phillipe smirked as the vote unfolded before him, for he was in good spirits, for both the prior night, and this morning were both productive. He was bruised from his wife’s eagerness to join him his bed, but in the end the pleasure was greater than the pain, just as he hoped the sacrifice of owing favors to three of the realms foremost men would be outweighed by arresting the Duke of Burgundy. Earlier that day, in the morn, he had spoke privately with each of them, first with the Prince Bishop of Reims, the new Court Chaplain, to whom he inferred that a king’s favor could prove valuable to a young clergyman. After that he spoke with the Duke of Aquitaine, who reaffirmed his support for the arrest provided that the King owe him a favor, which Phillipe was glad to. Lastly, was the Duke of Champagne, and Phillipe offered a valuable favor if he would vote with him, should his stepfather, The Duke of Picardie, try to depose Etienne in favor of one of his daughter’s sons, he would intercede in Champagne’s behalf so that he would not lose his lands to one of his half-brothers. As a result, the final tally of the vote as a simple majority, four favoring Duke Henri II of Burgundy’s arrest, and the remaining three voting against.

Still, Phillipe felt a shadow of doubt fall over him,”He had better come quietly, this realm does not need civil war.

Bishop Erik, the apple fell far from the tree. Queen Ingrid is as subtle as an avalanche. (I love her.) The council is more irksome than the Duke of Burgundy. (Can the next council meeting be a hot dog roast?) Is the Duke in the succession line? The duke may be having back problems. (20 years on the rack, while in the oubliette, would help his posture and stretch his kinked up muscles.) Wonderful chapter!!!

Erik certainly isn't his father, but being a bishop hasn't stopped other men from sleeping around, but we shall see how church life suits him... Ingrid can be terrifying when she wants to be, and often uses intimidation as best she can, though I suppose that deep down in her heart she's not a horrible person... Phillipe has certainly had his differences with the council, but he's a politician first and foremost, always looking for a way around their objections without becoming a tyrant... The Duke of Burgundy is indeed in the line of succession, as he is the son of Phillipe's late uncle Robert... As of right now he is fourth in line, behind Phillipe's only son, Charles, Phillipe's brother Hugues and then Phillipe's nephew Henri, who also happens to be Burgundy's grandson through his daughter Helie.... Therefore the Duke of Burgundy can have any number of motives to attempt the murder, these points will come up in the next chapter... That would be a fitting punishment, hahaha... We shall have to see what the Duke receives yet there may be more drama on the horizon... Thank you so much for your insights!!!
