February 13, 1945, Rio de Janeiro, Portuguese occupied Brazil

Francisco Preto addresses the people by radio.

"Today, we welcome our brothers across the Atlantic back into the Fifth Empire. The half-hearted resistance of the weak Brazilian government and army was no match for our soldiers. Many of the people welcomed them with open arms and were overjoyed to see the Portuguese flag flying in the town squares again. We have now righted a terrible wrong going back more than a hundred years.

The United States and Great Britain have declared war on us and have already made failed attempts to invade our home shores. Our battle-hardened soldiers threw them back to the sea where our navy and brave airman made short work of their transports. Portugal has now reclaimed its place as Master of the Atlantic Ocean. As you know, the Soviet Union has already fallen to the Germain Reich. Our war with the British and Americans may take several years. But it will be on their shores and not ours. What a triumph for our people when our troops enter the Potomac and the Thames! The day is drawing near for the completion of our conquests."

Current Situation

We took a fair amount of time preparing and rebuilding, but that preparation paid off. Our navy managed to keep naval supremacy across the Atlantic and we executed a simultaneous naval invasion of all Brazilian ports.

Simultaneously, we seized Gibraltar and attack the Allied lines at Morocco.

Within about a month Brazil had fallen, and the Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana soon thereafter. North Africa followed swiftly.

With our improved navy and airforce (spotter subs, better escort destroyers, raiding and strike force subs, and NAV bombers covering much of the Atlantic with full radar support) we have managed to create a deadly corridor for Allied naval forces to cross.

We have manned the entire coast of Portugal and Brazil to defend against naval invasions and we have cut off access to the Mediterranean. Venezuela and Peru have joined our alliance with some diplomatic arm twisting. The larger war situation has taken a strange turn. the Yunnan Free Empire joined the Axis and Japan declared war on it, meaning Japan is now fighting the Axis. The Axis managed to capitulate the Soviet Union and the Japanese are slowly pushing through Eastern Russia. This chaos is better than we could have hoped for. Our next goals are to invade Britain and the United States in order to end the war against the Allies. We can then choose to join the war against Japan with Germany and Italy in order to seize more of China and the East Indies.

Portugal is doing a deft job of playing the middle.

July 13, 1946, London, Portuguese Britain

Franscisco Preto addresses the people of Britain by radio.

"People of Great Britain, today I have accepted the resignation and surrender of your Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill. You are now members of the Fifth Empire--the greatest sea-going empire in history. We remember the ancient Anglo-Portuguese alliance. England came to aid of Portugal many times throughout history. We now vow to protect you and your remaining territory from any Axis or Japanese interference and we may yet recover some of your former territories. Even now our troops prepare to assault the rebels in the United States to restore them as a rightful colony of Britain as a member of the Fifth Empire. Rejoice! In partnership with us you are now once again masters of the waves and an empire on which the Sun never sets! The Queen has asked me to serve as Prime Minister and Protector of the British Isles for the duration of this terrible war. I pray that it will end quickly, but much remains to be done to protect the world from tyranny and oppression and right the wrongs of history."

Current Situation

Our navy and air force gained naval supremacy and we invade Britain through Wales.

After our marines achieved a beachhead, we brought in our new 40-width artillery divisions (supported by Infantry and Artillery experts for Portugal) which made short work of the British lines and pushed toward London.

After we secured London, remaining British forces were pushed north into Scotland before ultimately surrendering. We have manned the shores to defend against a counterattack by the United States and are now beginning the slow trek through South and Central America toward the United States. We have not yet defeated the United States navy, but we will work on this as well to potentially open up a more direct route to Washington.

I guess turnabout in the oldest of alliances if fair play :)

Portugal really has come around, with it going from having great difficulty against Spain to now invading and pushing around Britain.

Well! The destruction of most of the navy in the last war doesn't seem to have slowed you down at all.

Maybe this is something that needs to be remedied...

Unfortunately Japan got to Australia first. If we manage to win the war against the US, joining the Axis in their new spat with Japan might present an opportunity though...

I think it comes down to poor planning and play on my part for Spain. With a year of buildup and re-aligning production things went much better with Britain. The 40-width 8/8 inf/artilllery divisions murdered Britain but don't seem great against the US even with the double advisor bonus. May have to retool again to 14/4 or just pure 20 inf. I'm getting bogged down in Mexico and may need to take Cuba and clear the Gulf with NAV bombers to open up a new front.

I have an interest in Portugal and Brazil.

Do you haven a a s
trategy that can win Brazil without civil war? The Monarchical branch seems to have a lot of moving pieces anchored around managing Stab levels

The other branches seem wide oppen for for creativity. Do you see armored cars having a role in low in low supply situation.

I don't have much experience with the civil war branch. I think the key to Brazil is knowing where its victory points are. They are almost all along the coast, with just a couple inland. A simultaneous naval invasion on all coastal VPs gets you almost all the way there. To get the rest, a couple of quick motorized divisions (or even cavalry) can race over and grab them. Prepare collaboration government can also get you closer by lowering their surrender threshold. I don't really see a role for armored cars. For the Amazon, I wouldn't spend much time there (see above), and if I had to I would just use 10 infantry with support artillery, support rocket artillery, cavalry recon, maintenance company. Replace cavalry recon with light tank or motorized recon and add a logistics company if you've got oil to spare.

Francisco de Barcelos Rolao Preto addresses a joint session of Congress

"It is a pleasure to address the First Congress of the New World Provinces of the Fifth Empire. I am sure you are relieved not to be under the rule of Herr Hitler. Portugal shares your values of religious freedom and multiculturalism. We granted full citizenship and partnership to our brothers from Angola and Mozambique, and as you know my first act as Protector of the New World was to grant full rights of citizenship and equality to all African, Latino, Native American, and other minority citizens who long suffered the cruelty of the racist government of the United States and to grant reparations. Just as this body is now much more diverse than it was a year ago, these new citizens will find increased opportunities in the empire. I have installed Black governors in all states and Black officers at all levels of the new colonial militia which will secure freedom for all Americans in the provinces of the New World. But there is also much opportunity on distant shores as well. Thanks to the recent treaty we are now masters of both the Suez and Panama canals, Canada, South and Central America, England, and much of Southeast Asia. American ship and aircraft building will help stitch together a trade network the likes of which the world has never seen."

Current Situation

We have acquired a vast empire in the final peace treaty with the Allies. The odd war between Japan and Germany remains, though I think I may call this good and stop here.

Columbia and Panama fell quickly as we slowly worked our way through Central America with our Venezualan and Peruvian allies.

The battle for the United States truly began in Mexico, where American troops established a strong front. Progress was slow but inevitable with our 70 or so divisions of elite artillery ("space" artillery - 40 width half rocket artillery half infantry with 1 modern heavy tank destroyer -- taking advantage of Portugal's infantry and artillery experts) supported by medium tank divisions, fighters, and close air support.

The Axis began a naval invasion in Canada and later the Mid-Atlantic states that helped divide the American forces. This allowed us to push into the United States proper.

America was unable to defend multiple fronts and the Fifth Empire quickly swept throughout the West and across the Mississippi, leading to American capitulation.
hoi4_268.png

hoi4_270.png

Canada stood alone, but swiftly fell. The Treaty of Labrador concluded the war between the Axis and the Allies, with the Fifth Empire taking 126 states across the globe.

hoi4_273.png

In the old world, the Fifth Empire managed to connect its African territories, and expand from Iraq through the Near East and into Egypt to claim the Suez canal. It secured most of Indonesia and the resources in Southeast Asia. It also took all of England and a small part of southern India.

hoi4_274.png

In the New World, the Fifth Empire now spans from Brazil to Alaska, with friendly states Peru and Venezuela owning small parts of that. The Fifth Empire also controls the Panama Canal and some of the Antilles.

hoi4_275.png

The Fifth Empire now rules over an eligible core population of 17 million and a non-core eligible population of 589 million, along with a few small collaboration governments and puppets.

I neglected to snag a piece of Australia in the peace treaty before Germany took it, though . . .

If we were to continue the game the clear play is to join the Axis in its war with the Co-Prosperity Sphere. There is no way Japan can survive long term against Germany now. El Salvador and the Dominican Republic joined the Co-Prosperity Sphere so we could take them easily, and then set up for a long fight in China against Japan and an eventual naval invasion of the home islands. However, the -100 relations penalty from the Fifth Empire is permanent, so presumably Germany would eventually turn on me after Japan was conquered!

I am starting to fade on this game, though, so I think I may call it here. Commanding such a vast empire with all resources and both canals is a pretty good outcome for Portugal!

Seems to be a pretty decent point to bring it to a close.

America really should have striven to stop Portugal in Mexico. However, I for one welcome our new Portuguese overlords.

Thank you, all, for reading and for the supportive comments. Definitely a great first experience writing an AAR. Any suggestions on improvements for my next one would be welcome.
