SEA is as everyone knows has been neglected for a long time with the last update being burma and the Philipines.

In particular something that is absent is the religous interactions in particular in Indo-china.

On christianity:
The various states in Indo-china had a great deal of contact with both spanish and french missionaries/traders/emisaries.

On Islam:
Islam had an extensive precense in the form of traders. The cham were accepting of their precense.

Existing mechanics: at the moment the only existing mechanic is for the spread of islam "Propagate Religion" the problem is that this mechanic demands 50% trade power in a region somthing the AI is rarely able to achive. Thus I propose new mechanics for the tags mentioned beneath as an entry point for Islam and to possibly be futher propagetade if the AI is successful (Which is unlikley).

New mechanics:
1. Trade agreement:
Requires a favorable opinion that and that the target is within the same continent or colonial range. The effects will depend on following: Do they have the same ammount of embraced institutions? If yes they gain a trade power boost in the others native trade node if one has less embraced institution the tag gains a boost for for the institutions the other one has (Though this does not in and of itself not spread the institutions) mutual institution boost if both have an institution the other does not.

2. Protectorate:
The establishement of a protectorate dependent on 3 things; Super regions; You cannot establish protectorate in your own super region or a closley neighbouring one to the superregion mainland (Thus the other mediterranian countries are neighbours for Europe but not the Americas), Technological (Institutions) or Military inferiority on the subjugated parties side, positive opinion however can be enforced with a casus belli. Function like the tributary system subjugated party will gain a boost to institution spread and domestic trade power. Pagans can convert to their overlords faith. If a nation is both technologicaly and militarily inferior they are more likley to accept.
Thus a strong nation might be subjugated for a time while a but will eventually break free.

Cambodia:
The first christian missionaries were from Portugal in 1555 however left a year later as he felt that no one would convert without the king doing so first.
Islam was more pervasive on the other hand after extensive contact with Malay merchants Ramathipadi I converted to Islam when they offered there aid to help him ascend to the throne. He was later overthrown in a vietnamese coup.

Solution:
1. Christianity:
minor events were you can allow the christians to stay or shut them out resulting in either better relations with a european power or greater loyalty from the clergy. https://www.academia.edu/35897672/A_History_of_Christian_Missions_in_Cambodia

2. Islam: Conversion by event, a string of events that start with the assassination of your current monarch you can either support Ramathipadi I and become a muslim or oppose him and remain buddhist either way you face pretender rebels. Likley to be reconverted if the AI is in charge.

Champa:
The kingdom ended too early to have relations with the western powers but extensive contact was had with muslim traders since at least the 10th century. By the 17th century the royal families of the established puppet state had converted all together.

Solution:
Islam: Malay muslim missions to be introduced that allow for reduced trade power requirements in nearby regions targeting first and foremost cham cultures provinces. The Cham kingdom gains an event by which they can convert if they control and have proper cores in one muslim province.

Ayutthaya:
Christian missionaries became active in the 16th century with the beginning of French-Thai relations. This lead to increasing french interests in controling the region through the royal house and increasing their troop count. This erupted into a nationalistic upheavel as the buddhist elite feared the rising power of the Jesuites and king Narai nominated a christian heir. The Siamese kingdom deeply distrusted islam.

Solution:
Christianity: Event chain that leads up to a disaster called "Siamese revolution". Events start when coming into contact with a catholic european power. It starts with events permiting futher privliges for the europeans and deeper trade ties. If you have a weak claimant or ruler the counter starts ticking and it gets worse the more consessions you give the french and if the weak claimant becomes ruler. The revolt will lead to the death of the current king you get to choose which side you take. Victory for the catholic leads to trade steering to the european power, a garuntee of independance/protectorate will be established and breaking it will cause the trade steering to be aborted, catholicism becomes state religion of Ayutthaya institution spread is boosted. If the buddhists win all ties are cut with the respective nation, malus with all catholic nations, gain stability, loyalty with clergy and nobility for an extensive ammount of time.

Vietnam:
Christianity came in the 17th century and some 6000 people were converted until the confusian establishment had Alexander de Rhodes forced out twice. Vietnam persecuted Cham christians and harassed malay emissaries.

Solution:
Christianity: Event upon encountering catholic power following the age of reformation allowing them to stay grants you bonuses to a trade node and a set chance that it will become christian rejecting it will give the nobility and clergy loyalty.

SEA nations should definitely have a path to becoming Sunni especially Champa and Cambodia. The conversion through trade node doesnt really work in the Siam trade node.

I can also see Viet having a path to Catholicism not unlike Ming.

Only way I managed to make it work was by capturing Ayuttaya as Malacca

Possible I allways thought that event should be tied to the current emperor of China
