there may be a calculated chance for the Rising Sun: now, IJA have more time to finish China Incident without interruption, as Soviets and colonial empires fights elsewhere, and USA will battle over worthless Pacific Islands for a while :) with Soviet oil and this time, perhaps, also synthetic oil (OTL damn Germans never sent blueprints or specialists), they also may very well ignore Singapore and East Indies altogether, focusing on Defensive Perimeter in the Pacific - because that's the only important thing for Japan in this war. As long as imperial forces won't allow US military to attack Home Islands, there will be a chance - if not for victory, then for face-saving peace treaty.

LOl at the idea of Japan being better off because the fury of the American people can be focused solely on them.

They'll be fine because the HOI AI is terrible, not because of how this would realistically play out.

More sanity, luck and decisiveness of the Tenno would do a such miracles. Like reverse Midway, actually very very easily to may have happpened. Or completely destroyed Oahu facilities. Or properly fortified and garrisoned Guadalcanal. Better handled China Incident would be awesome miracle alone.

Which historians think a "reversed Midway" was plausible, let alone the rest of incidents you mention?

Try an essay "Our Midway Disaster" by Prof. Theodore F. Cook, Jr., Asian Studies, William Patterson University

EDIT: In this article, he and other military historian are quoted about Midway disaster option.

If the United States had lost most of its carriers at Midway, would the allies have continued to pursue a “Europe First” policy, as they actually did? In the end, however, the war would in all likelihood have ended in a way familiar to our history books: with the atomic destruction of Japanese cities.

I don't agree with this, though. If IJN (somehow) preserved Defensive Perimeter around Home Islands and there was strategic stalemate and just more slaughtered U.S. Marines, unconditional surrender wouldn't be the only option.

Wouldn't the Soviet Union have something to say about that?

They can stay out of this: OTL Germans kept them quite busy, and Stalin was less than interested in Asia, that's the geopolitical fact. He considered great amound control in Europe as much more important for survival of his domain. He had schemes for Caucasus, Persia or Xinjiang, but it was never a priority, it seems.

In this timeline, they are kept busy so far too :) besides, if Kanto Army's reserves were not so much wasted in Pacific, Burma and massive operations in China, Soviet operation in Manchuria would have faced much more resistance: 'Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation' would be easily disaster, if faced determined and same strong enemy able to counter-attack and cut their literally only good supply line - the TS Railway.
Imagine 2.000.000 Soviets with one vulnerable supply line against 2.000.000 Japanese with numerous good roads, railways and in absolute control of the local coastlines. Vladivostok isn't Sevastopol as well. Four battleships, ten cruisers and there's nothing left soon.

Hey everyone, I got some bad news.
I'm putting this AAR on hiatus for the time being. I've been trying to get some of my other writing projects done, and this AAR is kinda taking up a lot of time. Also to go on further with the war I would need a major overhaul on the AI through save editing (we all remember how bad i am at that). Which is all my fault since I've been making DH do things it wasn't really meant to do.

Yeah I'd like to edit this so it would be more realistic. on all front. I would realisticly see a 1943 where Russia has pushed the allies back and France has gone socialism. China should be crushed, and USA should be landing forces in the islands in the south.
Instead i believe AI France and Russia will just meatgrind eachother forever. AI USA and Japan will just naval battle eachother forever. and we'll get nowhere.
Here's what I think I'll be doing.

  1. Launching my own website around Christmas with some other short stories and novels (including this AAR)
  2. Getting the save cleaned up, and edited (maybe try and convert it to the next patch coming out if they have a date for it)

I might boot it up again in a year precisely or have one long session which covers the 6 months i'll be away.
Not sure, but the bottom line is I have to fix those 2 things first.

You guys are all awesome, and I've really enjoyed the feedback I've gotten so far. I couldn't have done the historical realism without you guys giving me helpful info and corrections!

A great idea and a great AAR following it. It's been a pleasure.

Thanks for this, though I am going to miss it.

Thank you @MacGowan for this excellent story! It's been a real pleasure to read you each week during such a long time.
I'll be closely watching an eventual return of this AAR. ALso keep us informed of the progress of your website!

Oh, dang it... it's a shame.

Good luck with your projects, old boy.

I kinda felt it coming. The content of each chapter was getting a little less each time, and with more and more breaks in between them. I'll be looking forward to its grand return!

What a pity! I lost track of this AAR around June and started to close up yesterday...
But thank you for the fun I had reading your AAR! I hope you find a way to revive this fascinating timeline!

Hey guys, I was playing with the idea of maybe starting up a realtime world war I AAR. I wish I could continue this one but the save is incompatible with the new patch, and the ahistorical nature has spun the AI into a frenzy.

I'm wondering if WWI would be easier for the AI to handle (The AI Pacific WWII theater is horrendous).

anyone know a good mod for the most realistic 4 year WWI experience?

Is there any interest in this? :)

Oh yes, Great War was so interesting to watch in real time. Would be very cool to see it all very visually on a map...though of course, with hindsight, the war probably wouldn't last four years and have all those really dumb campaigns in them unless you were
a) dedicated to at least trying to match the general confusion and ambitions of the time
b) completely heartless and liked watching the virtual people's die in droves.

But yeah, would love to see this.

A WWI AAR would be lovely. You do AARs really well and hopefully the AI doesn't go crazy at Anti-Historical scenarios.

If anything I will hope that in that game, like this one, that Canada HOLDS THE LINE!

I would say the grand campaign would be the most realistic WW1 experience, however the ai is a little wonky with Germany (90% of the time) crushing Russia in 1916, and going on to win the Great War. Even then some countries have issues such as Greece never joining the war, (which is a good thing by modding standards as the Ottomans tend to be crushed by the Entente if Greece is still in the Entente during the Greco-Turkish War.) the interwar is more accurate though (with the exclusion of the Corfu Crisis if Greece is still in the Allies by 1923.) besides Germany in the mod is scripted to lose if they don't take Paris before October 1918.
