Our truce with Kongo is up, and we're looking to declare, when something stopped us.

20170528151333_1.jpg

Kalundwe, our staunch ally, who we have been with for time immemorial (I mean, it was at LEAST 20 minutes, that I know for sure!), has allied with our enemy! That cheating HARLOT!

The Zoroafricans needed to stabilize after such a shocking revelation...

20170528151458_1.jpg

So they did! War with Kongo will wait, for a few reasons. Mostly because another set of truces are set to end soon.

20170528151709_1.jpg

The truce with Kuba ran out, so they were DOW'd before our "ally" decides they want to be friends with them, too!

20170528151736_1.jpg

Twelfth verse...

20170528151750_1.jpg

Same as the first.

20170528152217_1.jpg

Shortly after the decisive victory over the Kubans, Zoroafrica learned how to turn cooking pots into machines of war, shooting large, iron balls at the enemy!

Meanwhile, in Europe...

20170528152458_1.jpg

Yup, Savoy has a PU over France. When I saw they had the same king, I thought that France was leading Savoy. Boy, was I wrong!

20170528152626_1.jpg

We finally hit Admin tech 7, giving us our second idea group, exploration! If we're to expand into the gold mines of Kilwa, we NEED this idea group. And getting a couple of CNs for colonialism down the line would be nice.

Back in Europe...

20170528152730_1.jpg

Easy come, easy go, I guess. I think Savoy abandoned the PU, but it would have been HILARIOUS to see a giant Savoy in France's place.

20170528153143_1.jpg

Okay, Kalundwe is cheating on us with not one, BUT TWO COUNTRIES?! That's the last straw, we're through, Kalundwe! I'm taking everything in the settlement, right down to the kitchen sink!

20170528153228_1.jpg

Take this! My love, my anger, AND ALL OF MY SORROW!

20170528153234_1.jpg

Shining Stackwipe!

20170528153345_1.jpg

You get some too, Yaka!

20170528153412_1.jpg

No wipe...
YET!

20170528153435_1.jpg

Get outta my Africa!

20170528153649_1.jpg

True to our word, we leave Kalundwe with nothing but the kitchen sink.

20170528153737_1.jpg

And we make Yaka wish they never got involved with Kalundwe.

20170528153911_1.jpg

We then turn around and face Kongo, who was still allied with Kalundwe.

Hey Kalundwe, know how I said you could keep the sink? I lied.

20170528154104_1.jpg

Killing the Kongolese, with ease!

20170528154111_1.jpg

Done and dusted.

20170528154455_1.jpg

With that, Kalundwe is no more than a bad memory, and the coalition of Fetishists is all but vanquished.

20170528154736_1.jpg

I actually got pretty lucky with this event, for two reasons.

1. My heir died while I was waiting for land to finish coring. He wasn't in combat or leading a siege, so no stab hit, but I was left without an heir.

2. The heir offered to me was actually acceptably average, and with a strong claim.

20170528154816_1.jpg

And our queen consort is above average, with the best trait I could have asked for.

20170528154858_1.jpg

But, you gotta take the good with the bad.

20170528155036_1.jpg

And the bad with the also bad. If only they would have chosen to spawn in the Kongo area, and not Rwanda... :(

20170528155301_1.jpg

This is the peace deal with Kongo. They're just a 4PM now, easy pickings for later on.

20170528155449_1.jpg

Zoroafrica's looking pretty good now! Not great, but pretty good!

Back in Europe, things are shaking up!

20170528155635_1.jpg

Protestantism has formed, which means the current age is coming to a close. Unfortunate, but it is what it is!

20170528155909_1.jpg

A lot of rebellions started popping up, thankfully they're mostly based around Kongo's tech!

20170528160229_1.jpg

We're also now rivals with Portugal! We're moving up in the world!

20170528160354_1.jpg

We also finally got our colonist, and we decide to NOT risk the natives. I mean, did you SEE what they did to Bunyoro and Kazembe?

So burn them all!

20170528160532_1.jpg

I believe our nobles have mistaken two Republican candidates for generals. These two should be in Italy, not Africa, silly

20170528161221_1.jpg

It's 1502 and still no colonialism, thanks to Castille and Portugal favoring the African coast. I hate you Portugal, GRRRRR

20170528161251_1.jpg

And now we have our second national idea! Time to rake in that sweet devotio- hold on, I've just been told that monarchies do not get devotion. Umm... NEVER MIND, FOLKS!

20170528165108_1.jpg

And I'll leave you all with a sight to behold: a stable and "powerful" Theodoro! The alliance to Muscovy explains it all, but I still can't help but feel proud of them for getting this far :D

I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, a lot was covered this time around!

err, no you don't need it?

take a vassal in madagascar and go for their neighbours with claims, core west coast and claim kilwa. or... vassalise malindi?

oh well, too late now.

but using exploration to colonize cape good hope isn't bad idea if you want to lock trade in zanzibar late game.

but, you seem skilled enough to ofc to expect me to see you having planned that all ahead already!

It'd be an obvious lie if I said your AARs didn't influence mine in some ways. And we definitely do have similar writing styles, especially using the emoji faces to give context to the image (as well as to help interpret what's been written).

But I will say that it was entirely coincidental that I copied your OB-LIT-ER-AT-ED. I had actually tried several other words, but they didn't have the proper ring to them.

Unfortunately, as a Zoroastrian duchy with a relatively poor economy (most states I own are between 10-15 dev), no one is diplo-vassalizeable. For Madagascar, the distance between borders is too great, and Malindi considered me too weak. So it was either colonize, or no-CB. And I don't exactly have any ships at the moment.

Plus, as you said, locking in Zanzibar is the goal, the Great Lakes trade node is terrible, even with my dev-pushing of its only estuary.

And getting colonialism through having CNs is gonna be cheaper than going through another 2000 points for development.

He's quite old though, couldn't you abdicate him?

My king, or my heir? Because abdicating a 5/5/6 was out of the question, and prestige is needed to get to kingdom rank once Luba is integrated.

Plus, things all worked out in the end, so I'm enjoying a nice Queen-regency right now :p

Chapter 4: The Golden Hoard(er)

We start off this chapter with a rather peculiar declaration from Portugal.

20170529112210_1.jpg

Portugal declared us their rival, and yet they don't even know who we are! How rude of them, hating us just because we hate them!

20170529112257_1.jpg

Our attention turned to the east, where we declared war on Maravi. Their fort in Zumbo wasn't being funded, so we can take it in a single tick, so long as we get there before the end of the month.

We took the fort, and then went about to destroy Maravi's army, so we can siege in peace.

20170529112521_1.jpg

They managed to get all the way up to Rwanda before we pinned them in. Sneaky sneaky!

20170529112534_1.jpg

But, nothing is faster than seventeen thousand Zoroafricans in thick fur coats!

20170529112545_1.jpg

Poor rolls all around!

20170529112552_1.jpg

Unfortunately, this battle signals a major turn...

20170529112600_1.jpg

It looks like our overwhelming power...

20170529112612_1.jpg

Is no longer so :(

This is the first battle where we had substantial losses (nearly 1/4 of our troops fell in that battle).

20170529112722_1.jpg

The follow-up battles are still the same, though.

20170529112756_1.jpg

Welcome to the age of Reformation, everyone! The first time I checked (a few years after the start of the age), we had WAAAAY more than 10 provinces converted. So that's one objective taken care of!

20170529112843_1.jpg

This is our peace deal with Maravi. The dip cost is staggering, and it shows how we need to finish Religious ideas, fast. But we also can't afford to slow down at this point.

20170529113001_1.jpg

And now, the world trembles in fear of Zoroafrica! We are the 5th greatest power in the world, just behind France!

But, it looks like SOME PEOPLE didn't get the message!

20170529113035_1.jpg

PORTUGAL!!

I hope they like the taste of their own blood, because this is an informal declaration of war! Zoroafrica now has a reason to hate them!

20170529113342_1.jpg

20170529113535_1.jpg

And now, Luba is integrated. And all their fetishist land? Rebellious with about 5 unrest per province. So the next 6ish years are spent fighting rebellions. MY FAVORITE THING!

20170529113942_1.jpg

In the year of 1509, word from Castille rang throughout the world. Their finest explorers had finally decided to look closer at what they had thought was a giant rock, and it turns out that the "giant rock" was actually pretty gigantic, actually! And it was called "America", because Columbus was too dumb to realize that it wasn't the Indies.

I was kinda hoping that colonialism wouldn't spawn for a while, since I was building a navy for exploring with. Would have been nice to discover it, but oh well, thems' the breaks.

20170529114133_1.jpg

Speaking of ships, we JUST figured out how to make ships, and our king is now enthralled with making them the strongest ships ever!

20170529114642_1.jpg

Here's the religious situation. Unfortunately, Kongo became catholic, which means they have the vile "recent conversion" modifier. So they get to live. For now...

20170529114959_1.jpg

Some of our soldiers have decided that they don't want to die in glorious battle! Instead, they would rather die looking at the water! Eh, as long as they find interesting stuff, that's fine, I guess.

20170529115437_1.jpg

We only have one gold province at this point, and it already paid dividends!

20170529130007_1.jpg

Speaking of gold, it's time to take Kilwa's jewelry box! Malindi is currently at war and is fully occupied, so they won't join. The fort in Zimbabwe is unfunded, so we'll rush in and take it in a flash.

20170529130110_1.jpg

Now this is a strange occurrence. Kilwa's army had spent about a year bouncing back and forth between Mzizima/Kilwa and Kinga, and NOT sieging our land. This is good, obviously, but it's also very peculiar. But hey, don't look a gift horse in the mouth ;)

20170529130217_1.jpg

During the war, we decide to tech up our military. Kilwa had parity with us at the start of the war, so getting a leg up might help, especially since they have more troops than we do. Which is partially why I was happy that Malindi didn't join, they may have pushed us over the edge.

20170529130502_1.jpg

It warms my heart to see that my enemy hate my rebels, almost as much as I hate them! :)

But, unfortunately, this is where Kilwa decided to actually go for my land.

20170529130559_1.jpg

FIGHT BETTER, DAMMIT!

20170529130609_1.jpg

I SAID BETTER, DID I STUTTER?!

20170529130612_1.jpg

A very costly victory. Kilwa runs off, letting us finish sieging their gold mines.

20170529131135_1.jpg

After that horrible battle, we get a new general for the following one.

20170529131149_1.jpg

Skewer them, men!

20170529131159_1.jpg

HOLD THE LINE!

20170529131204_1.jpg

KILWA! GET THE HELL...

20170529131213_1.jpg

OUTTA MY LAND!

20170529131221_1.jpg

Looks like shooting at live targets has made shooting down castle walls all the more simple.

20170529131656_1.jpg

Sieged up, and the capital fell fast.

20170529131752_1.jpg

Here's the peace deal. We took almost all of Kilwa's gold mines, the only one they have is their capital. We also take a center of trade, and a good deal of the coast.

20170529131806_1.jpg

We are now officially a kingdom! And with 455 development, empire rank is within sight, if you squint!

20170529132705_1.jpg

Remember how I said Zoroastrianism has no heresies? Here's proof. This event normally flips a province to a heresy of your religion (IE: Catholic to protestant, sunni to ibadi, ect.), but that doesn't happen here.

20170529132929_1.jpg

Apparently, our administrative ideas are good!

20170529133503_1.jpg

Time for war with Maravi, once more. They are allies with Kilwa, so we can shorten our truce with them by white peacing them out.

What does your economy and military look like? Interested to see how Zoroafrica compares to European nations!

20170529133526_1.jpg

Here's our economy. Honestly, it's a trainwreck. Most of our states are dirt poor, so we break even on making them states for the most part, and our army isn't cheap. We're just over 2000 ducats in debt, and when we pay for our troops, we hemorrhage money. If we don't pay them, we make half a ducat a month.

Unfortunately, we need our inquisitor to convert the sunni lands, and we're paying down corruption from unbalanced tech, and from not having 100% religious unity.

We've just cored the gold mines, and have converted some of the sunni land, so I do need to ask this: what would you suggest for getting the economy in order? Obviously, that inflation needs to take a long walk off a short pier, and stating the gold mines is priority #1. I'm focusing on finishing up Religious ideas, so our future conquests don't eat into our diplo points, and my next idea will either be admin for the core cost reduction + merc cost reduction, or a military idea like offensive or quantity (for either better fighters, or more manpower to burn). Once this war is over, I'm thinking I should move my trade capital to be in the Zanzibar node, which should help with my money woes.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter!

Yes try and lock down Zanzibar. Always a good plan.

Congratulations on your success - going from an African minor to the 5th most powerful nation on Earth is no small feat.

Getting your economy under control is absolutely necessary - those troops have to be paid and the empire's borders defended. Here's hoping Portugal doesn't come knocking before you're ready.

wow, i have never seen a colonizer being at the cape early 16th century. Usually they are there 1540 to 1570..

Kick them OUT! You can no cb them and steal away the colony once its past 950 population, then peace out for war reparations and whatnot

It must be the hardwood.

wait... kongo still gets the event to flip catholic without owning ports?I should look up that event condition again..

1. state the gold mines, accept the culture. do NOT increase autonomy. In fact, consider lowering it after stating it. enable development edict after pleasing the merchant guild to 60+ loyalty.

develop all gold mines to 10 or 12 production, after making the largest one your capital. The area there is hills and temperate climate, its not that hard on monarch points. Should have taken Kilwa capital, and should have made it your capital. but that can be done in follow up war..

after next war, consider capital move and make swahili accepted culture. I'd also consider culture shifting to swahili. It will make entire madagascar in your culture group.

2. hand all 25+ autonomy provinces to estates. clergy estate takes them all, while giving minimum of converted high manpower land to nobles. This will increase your tax income a BOATLOAD. Then remove said provinces once autonomy ticks down below 25%. hand COT and estuary to merchants. then build churches on all 4+ tax development land, and workshops on all 3.00+ price trade good provinces.

3. go bankrupt when all your neighbours are on 5+ year truces. if portugal hasn't fleshed out expansion ideas to full, you are safe if they haven't colonised that island nw of Kongo.. that clears all debt. But it might not be necessary with all that gold. still, controlled bankruptcies are powerful. You could build all buildings with loans, and go bankrupt 5 years after building them, planning it out ahead. downside is more inflation to pay down. but, consider it.

Kick them OUT! You can no cb them and steal away the colony once its past 950 population, then peace out for war reparations and whatnot

Unfortunately, the colony grew really fast, due to Portugal's special splendor ability in the Age of Discovery, and due to the fact they have both exploration AND expansion ideas. So by the time I checked on it again, it was just about to finish (as in, 990 settlers). So now I actually have to get a CB on it if I want to take it.

wait... kongo still gets the event to flip catholic without owning ports?I should look up that event condition again..

Apparently they do. Oh well, that just means I get to see how my conversion speed is against Christians. With an inquisitor, I'm able to convert ~9-10 dev sunni lands in about 2 years. Respectable, to say the least.

1. state the gold mines, accept the culture. do NOT increase autonomy. In fact, consider lowering it after stating it. enable development edict after pleasing the merchant guild to 60+ loyalty.

after next war, consider capital move and make swahili accepted culture. I'd also consider culture shifting to swahili. It will make entire madagascar in your culture group.

I've actively avoided raising autonomy the entire campaign thus far, and wouldn't DREAM of making gold mines more autonomous. I definitely should have taken the capital, but I also wanted to get rid of the other forts first, so subsequent wars would be faster.

I've actually been considering a capital move for a while now, and a lot of places are tempting at the moment. Kilwa's old capital would definitely be nice, 0 autonomy gold mine and all. But further to the north, Kaffa is currently sitting at 36 dev, which is maybe the third highest dev province in the world. But, that would take a long time to get to, since I'd have to cleave through Ethiopia amd Ajuuraan to get to it. So I'm having a think about that.

Culture shift is definitely on the table, though. While Persian is nice and large as a group, I do think I need to go for what's immediately beneficial.

2. hand all 25+ autonomy provinces to estates. clergy estate takes them all, while giving minimum of converted high manpower land to nobles. This will increase your tax income a BOATLOAD. Then remove said provinces once autonomy ticks down below 25%. hand COT and estuary to merchants. then build churches on all 4+ tax development land, and workshops on all 3.00+ price trade good provinces.

That's been my go to plan for a while. Unfortunately, the African interior isn't a wealthy place, so it's a matter of getting lands that fit all the requirements for bumping up the economy. But now that I've got some ivory, things are starting to look up on that front.

3. go bankrupt when all your neighbours are on 5+ year truces. if portugal hasn't fleshed out expansion ideas to full, you are safe if they haven't colonised that island nw of Kongo.. that clears all debt. But it might not be necessary with all that gold. still, controlled bankruptcies are powerful. You could build all buildings with loans, and go bankrupt 5 years after building them, planning it out ahead. downside is more inflation to pay down. but, consider it.

I actually forgot that the "declare bankruptcy" button exists now! I'll need to see how many more loans I can take, I think it's a fairly high amount. And yes, the gold should really alleviate the issues I'm having at the moment.

Unfortunately, Portugal DOES own the islands to the north of Kongo (the two ones that you can really overlook in a WC or African Power run), and the one between Africa and S. America is still untouched. But, since I plan on fighting them for the Cape anyways, I may as well make as big of a truce as I can, should I need to declare bankruptcy.

I meant the garbage king before he died and your good heir ascended. Or can't you abdicate before a certain age?

Eh, he wasn't garbage. The only reason I kept him around was because he had +1% to missionary strength, which let me stabilize a lot faster than if he didn't. Plus, while it's not the MOST time I could have had him for, 15 years of a 5/5/6 is pretty nice.

Chapter 5: The 9 Year Bore

Where we left off last time, we had just declared war on Maravi and Kilwa. Due to some fort shenanigans, the initial months of the war were undocumented. But it basically went like this: Zoroafrica took Kilwa's unfunded fort along the coast, they sieged it back, we went and took it back again. Now you're all up to speed!

20170530200954_1.jpg

A screenshot of us retaking the fort. I was surprised to see that Kilwa had assaulted the fort, the AI used to NEVER do that!

20170530201022_1.jpg

While we work on getting Kilwa out of the war, our enemies are running amok in our new land. And unfortunately, my rebel bombs didn't go off in the right provinces! :(
20170530202338_1.jpg

We peaced out Kilwa and occupied Maravi, then went to deal with the Mutapan and Butuani separatists. I was hoping they'd siege up Kilwa's Mutapan land and spit out a new target, but we didn't get so lucky.

20170530202541_1.jpg

But on the bright side, our hordes are more united than ever before! In fact, we're living so close together, our tents have turned into buildings made of stone and mortar!

20170530202636_1.jpg

Here's a look at our arch enemy, Portugal. Note how they have NO colonial nations. I got unheard of levels of bad luck for them to rush to the Cape and focus solely on Africa. I knew I should have gone with Zoroaustralia instead!

20170530202640_1.jpg

And Castille has been focusing solely on the Caribbean ever since they got the range. In fact, they own most all the islands in the region! (I hate them, too, they're allies with Portugal!)

20170530202753_1.jpg

The reformation is looking pretty strong in Germany, for once. I've only seen one reformation that looked absolutely gorgeous before, so here's hoping this is the second one!

20170530202830_1.jpg

We wipe Maravi from the map, and deal with our rebel issues for a bit. It's kinda boring.
20170530202935_1.jpg

Here's why I despise Portugal. I couldn't snipe the cape in a no-CB war, since they finished their colonies so fast, and the went and just started turning south Africa this putrid shade of green! This won't be taken sitting down, no sir-ee!

20170530203159_1.jpg

We finally get range to the Americas, meaning we can slowly start making our own CNs for colonialism. But, at the rate we colonize at, we might have it from stealing provinces before anything else...

20170530203235_1.jpg

Here, I contemplated war with the green menace, but decided against it for two reasons. 1, our truce with Kilwa was going to end soon. And 2, a rebellion of decent size decided it wanted to take 2 years to pop. Rebels never pop when you're ready for them to, it's a shame, really.

20170530203648_1.jpg

Here's how our army stacks up. We're first page of the ledger for now, but we don't know what an India is, so I think we're probably a lot lower than this. But still, it's a confidence boost. :)

20170530204135_1.jpg

For our first splendor ability, we took Religious wars. We need to kill Kilwa, and fast, since they're one of the nations that could join a coalition. Plus, getting provinces for cheap is always nice.

20170530204307_1.jpg

And Spain has formed. Usually, this is a neutral/bad thing, but here, this is good. For the inevitable war with Portugal, having less nations being called in is great. It's a lot easier dealing with the AI when they don't overwhelm you with stupid numbers of transports (IE: 2 from Portugal, 5 from Castille, 7 from Naples, and 22 from Aragon. I'm sure we've all had that happen before).

Still hate them, though

20170530204356_1.jpg

Time to crush the Kilwans, and they didn't learn from the past. Unfunded fort = easy WS.

20170530204424_1.jpg

Easy-peasy.

20170530204535_1.jpg

THIS LAND IS MY LAND!

20170530204542_1.jpg

THIS LAND'S NOT YOUR LAND!

20170530204705_1.jpg

I HAVE TECH 10!

20170530204708_1.jpg

AND WAY MORE MEN!

20170530204711_1.jpg

THIS LAND BELONGS TO ME!

20170530204715_1.jpg

Ow, my manpower.

20170530204739_1.jpg

Serve's up!

20170530204743_1.jpg

Ping.

20170530204715_1.jpg

Pong.

20170530204805_1.jpg

Now we have tech 11! That's too bad... FOR YOU!

20170530204825_1.jpg

1 serving 0.

20170530204836_1.jpg

Ping.

20170530204836_1.jpg

Pong.

20170530204849_1.jpg

Game, set, and match.

20170530204942_1.jpg

And now the English hate us! Probably mad that they know we've got the secrets of Freddie Mercury

20170530205357_1.jpg

Here's the peace. I made sure to take the entire coast, and let the autonomy ride, so that I can get the sweet, sweet income from Kilwa and the rest.

20170530205644_1.jpg

Zoroafrica, growing steadily. But they're still a bit of a glass cannon.

20170530210827_1.jpg

Kilwan rebels spawned, and in a stack that was larger than our own. Instead of doing the smart thing, I decided to smash my army into theirs, and pray that they would win with fewer numbers.

20170530210838_1.jpg

Quit dying, you cowards!

20170530210854_1.jpg

It's time for a tactical assault in the opposite direction of the enemy...

20170530211029_1.jpg

Regrouped, and armed with the finest mercenaries, we take on the rebels once more! With feeling, this time!

20170530211040_1.jpg

Piece of cake.

20170530211316_1.jpg

Good event is well timed, thanks to all the sunni land we just took.

20170530212209_1.jpg

Here's a look at our army compared to Spain's. Their pitiful 54k vs. our elite and glorious 23k? No contest!

20170530212214_1.jpg

And Poor-tugal barely has an army, like @parats said. All their focus being on Africa has really made them pitiful.

20170530212153_1.jpg

And you know what they say in Zoroafrica? "A pitiful enemy is an excellent target"

20170530212223_1.jpg

Spain being stuck in war with Corsica is also a blessing, since they'd be tied up in Europe, and that means we can run free with little fear of them interfering.

20170530212450_1.jpg

We ran in and sieged up Portugal's holdings in S. Africa, and as we do, Spain sails on by, watching as Zoroafricans storm their rightful clay.

20170530212503_1.jpg

They can't even be bothered to send troops, even with all those transports lying around! Guess they're scared of us ;)

20170530212529_1.jpg

Portugal and Spain are FINALLY in the new world, and we just so happen to have a small 2k stack in S. America. TIME TO GO ON AN EXCURSION!

20170530213452_1.jpg

While our main force was coming back from the south, Portugal landed a paltry 7k men to siege up our holdings. Silly Portugal, thinking it's clever!

20170530213943_1.jpg

They even landed in the south, so we raised a small merc army to deal with the troublemakers! And we are BLEEDING ducats at this point, but it's fine. We can have 33 loans of 312 ducats each, and we're only on loan 15 or so.

20170530213955_1.jpg

DIE YOU SCUM!

20170530214000_1.jpg

They got chased down and were promptly executed.

20170530214100_1.jpg

Now Naples is being a cheeky bugger, trying to siege my land with 5 more troops than Portugal had used.

20170530214209_1.jpg

But the results are the exact same. Try harder next time, Italy!

20170530214652_1.jpg

A few more Portuguese marines landed, but we beefed up the army in the south a bit, and they were no match at all. This was the last time that the south was invaded.

20170530214856_1.jpg

Spain is now LOSING their war against Corsica, Brunswick, Ragusa, and Ulm. Their fault for underestimating the Ulm-ighty! ;)

20170530214944_1.jpg

We killed that last stack after another rousing game of ping-pong with them. And we play for keeps!

20170530215005_1.jpg

Portugal is looking downright pathetic at this point! Maybe I could invade the mainland!

20170530215017_1.jpg

Or, I could not. That works too, I guess :(

20170530215426_1.jpg

Good event is good!

20170530215714_1.jpg

Bad event is bad.

20170530220448_1.jpg

The second we moved into the province, Portugal fled with their tail between their legs. THIS IS MY AFRICA, AND YOU'RE NOT A PART OF IT!

20170530220914_1.jpg

Portugal is really stubborn about this land, and I have no idea why it's so expensive in terms of WS. They may have stated it, and I didn't look, but it's really bizarre. And here is where things got boring for me.

20170530221215_1.jpg

Portugal trying to get out with nothing but a little egg on their face. NOT TODAY!

20170530222554_1.jpg

Spain tried to take our land. Spain paid the price.

20170530222606_1.jpg

And that price was a bit steep.

20170530222858_1.jpg

After nine years (NINE YEARS!) of this war, we FINALLY have enough score to get what we want! When I did my Sunset Invasion back in the day, getting the colonies/CN land from Spain and Portugal only took 5 tops! I saved you the boredom, so trust me when I say this was BORING.

20170530223009_1.jpg

We now control the Cape!

20170530223918_1.jpg

And it's time to get that CN up and running, ASAP!

20170530224450_1.jpg

And time to clean up this last bit of Kilwa.

20170530225111_1.jpg

Still a bit messy, but looking better-ish!

20170530225458_1.jpg

And we are FINALLY out of that old capital, it wasn't great. The neighbors were loud and partied all the time, and there was all sorts of gang violence, it was a dump. Also it was a single province state with 5 total development. Sooooooo... yeah. That's no longer eating a state slot.

20170530225712_1.jpg

MUST. GET. COLONIALISM.

20170530225819_1.jpg

And that's where we are, just shy of 1550. I feel like expansion has been really sluggish, especially compared to the breakneck pace of the start. I definitely overestimated the powerbase of central Africa, and I'm paying the price now, it feels.

I'm lagging behind in tech (9/7/11 atm), and I still need to finish religious ideas. I'm thinking of making Mombasa or Malindi a vassal, so I can start to catch up in tech. But the printing press is JUST about to spawn, so I'm going to be eating a 100% penalty soon enough. I've currently got 21 loans out of 33, and with 6k in debt, that's not liable to go away without bankruptcy. I just worry about portugal coming back, since 5 of the 8 years of truce is up already. Ideas are welcome at this point, if you feel inclined.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter!

Here, I contemplated war with the green menace, but decided against it for two reasons. 1, our truce with Kilwa was going to end soon. And 2, a rebellion of decent size decided it wanted to take 2 years to pop. Rebels never pop when you're ready for them to, it's a shame, really.

always watch that window. you might have missed your chance to let them dishonor a year back so to speak :)

maybe it is because you use conquest cb as african taking african clay? wouldn't it be cheaper if you used colonialism as another european?

1. develop Kilwa for colonialism institution, and then the province of Butua (temperate climate and next to developed gold mines, good for printing press institution spread).
lag behind in tech. once up to par in institutions, get tech 9 in diplo and get 100 spy network in portugal beforehand, while leaving them with one colony that borders you. glorious tech reduction then. use tech advantage in military to stomp nations north.

2. invade madagascar, and colonize cape and diego garcia. from there, consider going for maldives and claim in India. You can reach the provinces next to Pagaruyung if you finished diego garcia. then go for all malacca trade node nations.

3. go north for all ports in gulf of aden.

4. make all nations north interesting, and enable popups for their war starts and endings. play opportunistically and end goal should be to invade Persia to have a shot at forming Mughals in the end.

it is what I did in my current stream campaign on twitch as PATE into Mughals the third way :)

1. develop Kilwa for colonialism institution, and then the province of Butua
I don't get how you could develop Kilwa to get an institution easy that way, the cost alone for developing Kilwa is 101, which sounds a lot to me unless it adds say 20% of the institution progress? Also great chapter, really enjoyed it.

Nice to kick Portugal out (mostly).

Hey everyone, I've been having a think for a bit, and I do think I should get your feedback.

As you can tell, there are a boatload of problems with the current run. To name a few:

1. Massive inflation BEFORE I had any goldmines.

2. Massive debt due to poor land + larger army.

3. Bad tech + two unfinished idea groups.

Those are ALL things that, I know for certain, could be avoided by doing things differently. While some things are out of my control, like Portugal deciding they want Africa more than they want CNs, most of my problems are of my own design, due to shortsightedness (let that be a PSA: don't play EU4 while tired. You make rookie mistakes when you do).

So, I guess what I'm asking here is this: would you like to see me play through this run, or would you rather me restart and put what I've learned to practice? I've played through worse runs than this, so I can definitely make it through this if you want me to keep going. But, if you want me to restart, now would be the time. After the first 100 years, restarting is still on the table and not all that painful.

Let me know what you all think, I'm open to either idea, and since this is as much for you as it is for me, it's only fair for you all to have a say in this.

I would say play through.
