Nicholaus II turns his nose at Colombo as he passes, long decades of collaboration forgotten in the shame of his heresy. Giacomo remains expressionless but is greatly distressed by this unforeseen turn of events. He had strongly respected Colombo's ambition and drive, and he had held him up as an inspiration to his fellow Italians as a trader, politician, and patriot. Privately viewing the remarks as the mistake of an overstressed and agitated old man, he nonetheless recognizes heresy, even accidental heresy, is not tolerated in the Queen of Cities and compromise and moderation are, unfortunately, seen as treasonous or treacherous as opposed to being the necessary and desirable skills of a capable senator. Quickly grasping furthermore that this will polarize the senate- as the Reds, as the "moderate" faction, will suffer alongside Colombo- he decides that the Blue Demes are preferable to the blind zealotry of the Whites, and if they can be persuaded to pursue war against the Xenoi then so much the better. He hastily, though somewhat subtly, scrawls a note to be delivered to Senator Raoul.

This unexpected turn of events has forced my hand. I will speak candidly. The Reds are finished. As a man of commerce and the Navy I find the Blue Demes infinitely preferable to the Whites, though I may not be able to officially join due to internal family politics I shall forever be friendly to your faction's interests. Your recommendation of securing the Black Sea is most sagacious, and gives me hope that you can recognize the necessity of securing the Eastern Mediterranean as well. Carthage, Nizza, Pisa, even the ridiculous enclave around Gorz- all are havens of lawlessness and bastions for Xenoi and Pisan piracy. I have found some of your faction to possess a merchant's prudence, and while this is usually admirable in matters of war it tends towards overcaution. My Uncle, boorish as he is, is correct that this is a good opportunity to strike west while the east is in flames. If an alliance with Aquitaine is infeasible- Senator Hvide's proposal is most excellent for both contingencies- I would recommend a subsequent war against the Pisans or Xenoi with the purpose of securing Tunisia and Italia via the provinces I have listed above, and a general resolution to seek such a war with Xenoi in the next five or ten years would win unanimous approval. This done I may in full conscience support your efforts to expand east and beyond. Commerce requires control of the seas, and a war such as I advise will secure the seas for our people.
