Okay, this is perhaps one of the most uninventive titles of all times, but I want to get back to AARing again. Please note this is vanilla, not HPP or BICE, so there are no backup events to help me out.

That's it, next time there won't be any nice tables, everybody thank these two rascals!

You're welcome :p

Btw: Communist China? Again?

You're welcome :p

Who's the rude Czech now, huh? :p

Btw: Communist China? Again?

Yeah, I want to finish it completely this time. Vanilla's approach of not doing anything to resemble the CCW it provides quite a good challenge I'd say :)

Chapter I: Laying the Foundations!

Okay, so we start out at war with all our neighbors, aligning to Comintern and asking Japan for transit rights. Remember, if you’re encircled, you can advance in any direction!

A3cQCqD.gif

There’s also nothing in the production queue! The PLA needs better weapons first!

bR4k7PU.gif

There’s also nothing new in the politics!

rlbKmfo.gif

Is there even remotely close of being new? Yes, the PLA is completely reorganized!

SBWdFTV.gif

And we are advancing in every direction as planned!

DzTOloc.gif

P.S. I think I forgot how to write AARs and I should really cut down on the exclamation marks

Chapter II: To Shanxi!

Great news came from Tokyo. Now we can pass through their territory whenever needed! And yes, I will deal with them... later :)

M1mtk4e.gif

Our first attack commenced from the very north of our territory. With our superior strength in numbers, we are bound to drive the corrupt Shanxi troops even from great defensive terrain!

ImkzJDm.gif

On 4th, elite mountain troops enter Xinjiang and are met with feeble attack from Linfen which ends sooner than it began.

qp5LvtM.gif

Reinforced by regular infantry, a mighty push is consolidated on Shilou, north of Xinjiang, with support from Suide. It’s defended by just a few disorganized militiamen who are about to break.

jtVPWhL.gif

The attack on Dongsheng has been ongoing for a week. One of our militia divisions are about to retreat from combat, but so is one of the Shanxi’s infantry divisions.

iLKpvAv.gif

Total economic mobilization is enacted on 11th. We need every factory we can get!

YvnPfAx.gif

A day later, the remaining infantry division is pushed from Dongsheng. Our militia did fairly well.

e0TBXm2.gif

Meanwhile, Kuomintang’s infantry division arrives in Xianyang and combat ensues. Our comrades, despite being assaulted from Tongchuan, don’t let up and continue their assault. Reinforcements from Jingbian are to arrive in a few hours!

8ugUdeK.gif

Troops already arrived to Dongsheng and are assaulting Baotou, to cut off whatever unit there is in the west of Shanxi state. In their way there is only a battered division that has just retreated from Dongsheng.

OBSgOLh.gif

On 20th, Tai Li’s infantry division is forced from Xianyang after a bloody struggle. This fortified position will serve as a great starting point to subjugate the Ma Clique after we deal with Shanxi!

PgyuqFc.gif

Another great offensive targets Fangshan. Taiyuan, Shanxi’s capital, is very close from there!

0P6x5HL.gif

However, Han’s militia division couldn’t hold onto Xianyang for too long. It’s forced to retreat shortly thereafter, however two fresh militia divisions are heading to the province and should be able to arrive sooner than the KMT’s division.

5SFvWtu.gif

Service by requirement is enacted on 24th.

A6c7lLo.gif

A cavalry division arrived to Baotou, but is soon overwhelmed by the stream of militia from Dongsheng.

WOexDoQ.gif

In the meanwhile, our militia division in Wuqi is under a more serious attack. However, reinforcements from both Xianyang and Yan’an are en route and easily contain the attack shortly after their arrival.

lf99N09.gif

After three militia divisions reached Baotou, it indeed turned out there was a cavalry division in the westernmost part of the country. Staging a furious counterattack, it was decided it would be futile to hold this hardly-defensible piece of desert and retreat to Dongsheng was ordered.

Chapter III: The Fall of Shanxi

With my officer ratio and espionage beefed up, I can focus on research now. Supply techs, education and militia doctrines and weapons are being researched.

MI3csht.gif

On 3rd February, the main attack force struck yet again, this time against Fenyang, another province bordering Taiyuan.

O4iD2Rj.gif

On 9th, specialist training is enacted and I start reinforcing my divisions. Despite being China, yes :p

mdLd3Sv.gif

Taiyuan is attacked on 12th. Despite attacking across the river and being a hilly province, having almost three times larger numbers outweighs these setbacks.

tcVhxEc.gif

Some minor skirmishes take place in the Xianyang fortified area. KMT together with Ma forces are trying to outflank Xianyang and cut it off to destroy our three militia divisions. Swift counterattack takes place and the area is quiet again.

R1D7tny.gif

While our militia pushes to Dengkou to establish a defensive line behind the Yellow river, the battle of Taiyuan ends in a lopsided victory for our forces.

dUEcRYN.gif

Taiyuan itself is secured on 21st, more than doubling on-map manpower generation.

Rp9NjWx.gif

With Taiyuan secured, an order was given to refocus and push towards Hohhot, as that would likely be the last refuge of the Shanxi’s government. Shuoxian was therefore attacked.

yfz2JCb.gif

Despite holding positions behind the river, our militia divisions were too disorganized to hold any further. Even then, Nationalists suffered twice the casualties while using regular infantry!

hb5C50R.gif

One by one, Shanxi’s provinces were liberated. The battle of Togtoh started on 6th March.

k0Iww32.gif

After our divisions arrived there, an attack was launched on Tumd Youqi. However, the attack was called off due to extremely stiff resistance.

QOI3dwg.gif

On 16th March, an attack was launched on to outflank the aforementioned province. This time, defenders didn’t have the numbers nor terrain to help them out.

jvePspg.gif

Two days later, the attack ended in a decisive victory.

nlC5Dvn.gif

However on arrival, our divisions were ambushed by a superior force. But instead of retreating, they held their footing, while their comrades launched diversionary attack to make the enemy stop the assault which ultimately succeeded.

gGc8F2M.gif

Diversionary attack on Horinger yet progressed so well, there was little reason to call it off.

pgGfe9u.gif

Since half of the original strike force assigned against them was now busy defending, divisions in Tums Zuoqi stroke at Hohhot on 25th. Defenders were shocked so much, that three of their five divisions hardly entered the combat before retreating.

uQegPRd.gif

Both battles ended in a success a few days later.

8FJJZer.gif

On 30th March, Chen Yi’s mountaineer division has arrived into the city and a very feeble counterattack was launched to relieve forces in the now created pocket.

WVuGXwX.gif

Shanxi gave up the fight the next day. Despite creating a huge pocket, Shanxi’s troops laid down their arms and KMT’s divisions were seen escaping through the deserts and mountains to Ma Clique. When they reformed in Nanjing, only a fraction of them survived this long march (aka what happens with expeditionary troops who have no land connection to their capital).

The Battle of Hohhot, haha, both commanders had the same last name. I don't know a lot about chinese names so I might be wrong about this, but does that mean they're family? Civil war does really pit brother on brother. Huh.

Anyway I of course shall follow :)

You got them! Invade the USSR now for a challenge!

But USSR are my friends! I cannot even invade Mongolia now, as it's all 0 infra border I have with them :D

I cannot find Zhong Yi on the internet, I probably would have to be native to get to sources, but they indeed have the same last name :D

Chapter IV: Stabilizing the Frontline

With the Shanxi’s surrender, several Kuomintang’s divisions found themselves horribly out positioned. They also suffered temporary supply shortages in the, now hostile, territory.

UOCuKyr.gif

In just a week, about six infantry divisions and three infantry divisions were inexorably marched towards their doom.

LT8AqDF.gif

With the Nationalist north-western flank in disarray, a number of troops was sent to chase the disorganized divisions into KMT’s controlled territory.

What completely stunned the communist leadership was that Yan’an was attacked in the midst of April and what was worse, its defenders retreated.

y37Iljl.gif

Reinforcements were immediately rushed to the city and ultimately repulsed the attack.

S4KvRRf.gif

In the meantime, Nationalists were still on the run in the north. One more division was overrun.

20th April:

uyVL4OS.gif

A week later, it seems the defense of Yan’an came at a cost. Forces in Wuqi were attacked, meaning that forces in Xianyang were under real danger of being encircled. In the west, a bulge is forming, hoping to destroy at least some of the KMT’s huge army.

eV4mXQY.gif

At the beginning of May, the flank of the breakthrough begins to falter, as more KMT and Ma forces arrive there. Order is given to close the pocket immediately. One division is trapped in Taiyuan and a few more are on the run.

fjsMnuZ.gif

What’s worse is that our divisions are forced from the bridgehead in Wuqi and Xianyang. We will make them pay for that! None of our divisions are trapped though.

10th May:

VOZvAEW.gif

Hooray, now we control more territory than, err... Guangxi, because they lost Guangdong to KMT. Hooray!

yag7cql.gif

Despite that I’m not in a terrible position to advance towards Yellow River and seize industrial cities there, I decide to pull back on 27th May.

6kYJ2bk.gif

The retreat to the line is orderly and completed on 12th June.

Gj2JrpH.gif

Your last screenshot. There are several divisions that don't look too difficult to trap, to the south. Use yan'an and the rivers to create a natural barrier, so you can free up some more units for an attack. depends on the strength of your divisions though. I don't know how powerful they are.

Either way, there is a VERY vulnerable region in the middle of that last screenshot where there is no river - a perfect location for a breakthrough, too. You have a lot of units on borders with rivers. You should move them to that riverless region.

I'm WAY ahead the AAR (it's not your fault though :D), now I'm in October 1937, since I thought it wouldn't be the best idea to throw up multiple updates at once that time. I had cheesy plan in my head given the past few test games, though there are lots of choices on how to play in this scenario. Both BICE and HPP give you some nice base to play with, but all what vanilla gives you is a finger and a kick in the nuts :D

To your plan: You have to pick your fights. If they attack you with 10% win chance, believe me their TACs will bomb the crap out of the defenders. Knowing that AI will throw anything it has in the immediate vicinity against you + TACs, also you need to have also a reasonable strike force to annihilate the pocket before the AI breaks through. And that's "when", not "if" ;)

My militia divisions are sure better, infantry and mountaineers possibly too, due to my officer ratio. They're all binary, except for one mountaineer division, as I started off with 9 brigades.

Either way, there is a VERY vulnerable region in the middle of that last screenshot where there is no river - a perfect location for a breakthrough, too. You have a lot of units on borders with rivers. You should move them to that riverless region.

Don't worry, that was just a temporary solution :)

but all what vanilla gives you is a finger and a kick in the nuts
Haha. I really need to get a mod for my next AAR, you've convinced me now :p

That's true. I forget the vulnerability of minors against bombers. Though there aren't many air bases around there anyway. I played as China a while back and found the biggest problem air-wise was lack of airbases. Made doing anything a real challenge.

I can't even contest them until I get an airbase and build a fighter wing, which I'm doing, to build up some practicals for better tomorrows, together with one IC.

Chapter V: Westwards!

A large-scale assault is launched on Xinzhou to cover the retreat of divisions from Datong.

X8byRzx.gif

The retreat from Shanxi is orderly without any large fights. Shanxi had to be abandoned in order to have a good chance to knock out the Ma. This takes about a month. After this period, using a large concentration of force, Wuqi is attacked. Attacking to mountainous terrain over a river, this wasn’t supposed to be an easy fight.

Note I modded Yan’an to have 3 VPs. While still in need of holding the city, I can safely inherit Shanxi’s and Ma’s VPs and still not surrender, as both have 3 VPs as well. 6/9=66.6, safely below my 71-ish NU. It also better emulates that communists were a movement, not a country per se.

By8uz8v.gif

Oddly enough, Ma forces from Hancheng launched an attack on their own, targeting heavily defended Yan’an. The attack on Wuqi was immediately halted and all units present in the city were to remain inside, due to the possibility of KMT’s forces joining the fight. The attack had been fended off after a few days...

IiVQr75.gif

...and a swift counterattack followed. A lone KMT infantry division couldn’t hold out too long against five infantry divisions.

bbzOrNz.gif

On 20th July, mountaineers in Hancheng were attacked by a Ma cavalry division. The more important news was however that we’ve reached an educational breakthrough!

Wrfsyi7.gif

Even though there were enough units to attack from three axes of attack and one division was already battered, the battle of Wuqi still looked unpromising.

E2qqhB3.gif

What completely took the communist leadership by surprise was that Ma forces from Wuqi retreated as soon as the attack began. This was probably caused by a lack of fighting morale while fighting on KMT ground.

xpHVqsU.gif

It seemed the communist steamroller was in motion again and couldn’t be stopped easily.

ieSdjoF.gif

The battle of Xifeng perfectly documented that.

VaOFVpV.gif

yeAxpy6.gif

In early August, our troops stoke at Xi’an.

zohPwkn.gif

Ma cavalry division couldn’t hold out our infantry and militia for too long even when reinforced. The battle ends in an easy victory and control over important energetic deposits and some industry.

pQ1GtI6.gif

Meanwhile KMT assaults Suide. I quickly counterattack and the offensive is halted. I know they would bomb my divisions to rubble.

aP0V7So.gif

Another attack, this time directed by the Ma, fails horribly on 15th August.

BgeNQyu.gif

It seems like the Ma Clique is unable to defend their country proper. Our mountaineer divisions are advancing in nearly every direction, while more units are moving in to support them.

X1EWzbO.gif

Despite their best efforts, Nationalists are unable to force one of our mountain divisions from Linxia and suffer terrible casualties. The division is forced out shortly thereafter regardless, mainly due to bombing than KMT land attacks.

Bglrq5p.gif

On the same day, 5th September, Lanzhou is captured.

mJw2Zp8.gif

Ma forces are either not seen or easily dealt with.

ng18EpY.gif

First underground resistance is spreading near Qahar. KMT has yet to see the real communist uprising!

xY6cclx.gif

Two more chapters to bring the AAR in-line with the game ;)
