Though, to play devil's advocate... the Communists somehow managed to survive 1949 with only six seats in Parliament. Somehow.

Think that is because of some.. external reasons ;)

That Communism is the way of the enlightened, and that we ignorant heathens cannot stop its eventual rise to power? :p

Clearly my next vote must go to the Communists then! Deus vult! Caesaropope vult!

The SIS says there is no communist plot to rig the election, and who could be more trustworthy than Britain's intelligence community? :p

The CIA say otherwise! And you know what they do to communist takeovers - legal or illegal

FFfffff, decisions decisions... prevent Labour from being the smallest party in parliament or give the Liberals a majority...

Sadly defending Labour would only lengthen the death knell, while voting Liberal will at least see a majority government dedicated to the centre-left post war consensus.

If the Liberals fail to gain a majority then I'm expecting a 'One Nation' coalition between them and the Tories (or at least confidence and supply) with both the Communists and National Liberals firmly locked out. Hell show some pity on Labour and get them to join in. Not the worst thing but it would be nice to see the Conservatives ejected from power and a strong centre-left government.

Well I Doubt thats going to happen...

In the hypothetical would you vote for the tories or the communists if those were your two choices everyone?

Depends on the tories and the communists, if it's Eden's Tories he'd probably have the edge. If it's Thatcher's Tories, commie, no question. :p

Please, please, please, do the latter...

On a side note, if the communists continue do well, perhaps we will see them evolve into a more responsible democratic socialist party? I could get behind that.

Maybe, I've just build my own seat calculator(yay for nested IF statements!) to try and see exactly how it would pan out.

Responsible democratic socialist party? You mean such as Labour, currently the smallest party in Parliament? Why on earth would they do that to themselves! :p

Only two hours to go.

Hey, Forseti, vote Labour so the rest of us don't feel so cold and alone out here. :p

My thoughts exactly, but I think both are an exciting possibility. Speculating wildly, it could signal friendlier relations between London and Dublin, which could have an impact on how Her Majesty's government deals with the problem of Ulster. Perhaps we will see a dramatic exit à la South Africa in our timeline?

The IRA are around, so somehow I'm not sure about relations being too much better.

On an unrelated note: boo! boo! What happened to our lovely majority? :(

So at the moment the Liberals are on about 280 and their old coalition partners Labour are on 9, so can't form a majority. The conservatives have about 238 and their old partners have 21, and so can't form a majority either. The communists hold the balance of power with their 70 seats but no one wants to officialy partner up with them.

If I voted Liberal things would get very different(assuming I've not made a mistake);

After passsing the 35% threshold the Liberals would see a return to parliament with 350 seats, a smallish but secure single party majority(the first since 1935 I think) that would lead to a stable Liberal government for the next four or five years. Can't have that. :D

LABOUR

Hopefully the minority government will collapse early and before the Liberals can permanently absorb the rest of the non-communist left, giving the Labour Party another chance to return to ours rightful place.

If labour does end up ceasing to be and the moderate left ends up in the liberals, wouldn't it be funny if in the future we ended seeing an SDP emerge from a split within the liberals. :p

Boo! Not only will we not get a majority, you may well have extended the Bevanites' rule of error.

And after all that wait, too? :p

Boo! Not only will we not get a majority,

I suppose you'll just have to content yourself with being the largest party.

you may well have extended the Bevanites' rule of error.

Bevanite? He got kicked out, kind of as I predicted. We're Wilsonians now. :)

And after all that wait, too? :p

Well it was really tempting to vote Liberal just for the historicalness and be able to say "I did that". My ego and my conscience had a long, long battle, but in the end my conscience won out. :p

Bevanite? He got kicked out, kind of as I predicted. We're Wilsonians now. :)

Nah, you're still Bevanite. If you weren't, I imagine you'd get a stronger showing. :)
