I have played nearly a dozen Steam games (Tomb Raider, the Total War series, Kingdoms of Amalur, just to name a few) that reward you Achievements even if you don't play online.
Yet if we play offline in Ironman mode, not only does the nullify the fricking point of playing in Ironman (getting the achievements) but we can never again get achievements with that save?
Dafuq?
Now I can understand not getting the achievements for the duration you're offline. You're not connected to the servers and thus it can't see your progress.
But losing all access to achievements on that save forever because your internet goes down? What if you play in a hotspot and it drops for literally a second? What if you go over your monthly bandwidth? A thousand different things could cause your internet to drop and make you waste potentially HUNDREDS OF HOURS of effort.
Now the only way to be certain of not losing everything is to completely ruin the purpose of Ironman's singular, constant autosave, and exit the game, copy the file, and save each one separately as a savescum backup whenever things are going your way.
Which, before you ask, is exactly what I'm doing now with my new "from Count of Naples to Emperor of Rome" Ironman playthrough. I already lost 124 hours of effort taking Byzantium from the Balkans to ruling all of Mali, Arabia, Persia, Tartaria, Italia, Hispania, Francia, Britannia, the Wendish and de jure Byzantine empires, and the vast majority of the HRE. That was 4.2 centuries of work towards SPQR flushed down the toilet. Not happening again.
Now, for the big question: what about losing internet connection causing the save to be altered in such a way that it never gets you achievements again? Is there no way to fix that? To not totally screw over anyone with a less than reliable internet connection? You know... *cough* Comcast *cough*
