Historical Succession Laws
v0.2.5
UPDATED - 04/06/2014

DOWNLOAD

If any HIP member is unsatisfied with this mod, then just PM me and I'll take it down. I've gotten the permissions from the PB and SWMH leaders, which this mod is mostly based on. See the credits section for full details.

1. About

HSL strives to give historically accurate succession laws and other historically cultural aspects to landed titles.
It currently gives historical succession laws to the British Isles and Brittany during the 867 start.
It could turn into something bigger, in regards to bettering the historical experience for the rest of the map.

If you like this mod or the idea of this mod then maybe you could help by making suggestions about what laws I could change for the landed titles on the map.
Doing historical research is time consuming, and I'm just one guy.

***IMPORTANT***
PLEASE post your suggestions in this format: Title/Year/Old Law (please provide if you can)/New Law/Source Links (optional, if you want your sources on the record)

e.g.
Kingdom of Ireland/867/agnatic-cognatic gavelkind/agnatic tanistry/Wikipedia - Tanistry
Duchy of Airgialla/867/agnatic-cognatic gavelkind/agnatic tanistry
etc.

Then do the same for any sub-titles you want to see changes in.
Include full law details, e.g. agnatic tanistry
***IMPORTANT***

2. Requirements

Requires CK2 v2.1.4 and HIP - RoI - 2014-05-24.

If there is demand for it, I'll consider a CK2 v2.0.4/HIP 2014-03-22 version of this mod.
However, this mod may already be backwards compatible. If someone wants to test this out for me then be mt guest. Otherwise, right now, I'm not bothered.

The modules I use and develop HSL for:
  • SomeWhat More Historical (SWMH)*
  • ARKOpack:
    • ARKO armoiries**
    • ARKO interface
  • Project Balance (PB)*$
  • New Borders, Rivers, and Terrain+ (NBRT+)
  • Vanilla Immersion, Events, and Traits (VIET):
    • VIET Traits
    • VIET Events
  • Cultures and Portraits Revamp (CPR)
*definitely required
**recommended to get the best use out of the flags for both the de jure and titular Kingdom of Ireland
$for the PB modules, I recommend using No Ahistorical Empires and no other modules for maximum playability and historical effect, with HSL

Incompatible modules:
  • Vanilla Immersion, Events, and Traits (VIET):
    • VIET Immersion*
*until VIET Immersion becomes compatible with SWMH, HSL will not be compatble with it

Further compataibity details in the HIP mod table.

3. Installation
  1. Unzip archive into the CK2 mod folder.
  2. Make sure you have the required HIP modules installed. (see requirements section)
  3. Make sure HIP and HSL are checked in the CK2 launcher.

Planned Ideas:

Planning on making the Titular Kingdom of Ireland usurpable for the next release.

Lordship of Ireland

Hiberno-Norman/Gaill culture (melting pot between Irish and Norman cultures).

Kingdom of Breifne Ui Raghallaigh 12th ct.

Kingdom of Breifne Ua Ruairc 12th ct.

Further succession laws for the sub-rulers of the British Isles and Brittany.

Might consider changing the Breton laws after some further revision.

Norman laws for later dates in the British Isles.

Possibly ideas for Northern, Western and Central Europe.

Germanic sub-cultures

British Isles sub-cultures

I might also allow/restrict certain cultures/cultural groups/religions/etc. from certain laws if you can provide a good argument for it.

Maybe Ideas:

The destruction of Aquitaine on the creation of France.

Cultures

I'll definitely use this. Could you specify what game-play effects you made?

I basically just accumulated some landed titles in the history/titles folder and added or edited succesion laws at the start of each files to affect some of the titles at the 867 start point. This might not have the same effect for later dates. At the moment the only lands that are affected are those ruled by Irish, Scottish, Anglo-Saxon, Breton, Welsh and other Celtic lords. It doesn't affect Norse lords.

I may not have gotten all of the historical laws right, but I've done enough research to think that I'm right so far. Besides, the real complexity of historcial laws isn't fully represented in CK2 at this moment. I've done my best to select the best laws that would represent historical accuracy.

I thought that succession laws were hardcoded?

Also, it's Gavelkind, not Gravelkind.

Actually, what I meant was how did it change, i.e. what was it before your mod and what is it now?

Well, just about everywhere in the British Isles was agnatic-cognatic when they were historically agnatic at the time. Ireland had agnatic-cognatic gavelkind laws (I think) when it should have had agnatic tanistry laws. I felt that Welsh and Welsh related cultures (Cornish, Cumbric) were best historically represented with agnatic gavelkind, except for Breton, which was best represented with agnatic feudal elective.

When I get the chance I'll make a better list about the changes. Something like:
Ireland: agnatic-cognatic gavelkind -> agnatic tanistry
Scotland: agnatic-cognatic tanistry -> agnatic tanistry
etc.

soggestion for you for Bohemia:
1039 - 1198 seniority (I'm not sure if it is ingame)
from 1198 on primogeniture.
Also generaly, k_bohemia should be primogeniture, d_bohemia should be seniority

Great! And they are agnatic I presume?

Edit: Actually, could you repost based on the format I've described in the first post. Thanks.

Edit: Are you saying?:
Kingdom of Bohemia/(867?)/?/agnatic primogeniture
Kingdom of Bohemia/1039/?/agnatic seniority
Kingdom of Bohemia/1198/?/agnatic primogeniture
Duchy of Bohemia/(867?)/?/agnatic seniority

Edit: I've finally figured out what you meant, but looking at the history files this already seems to be implemented, except with agnatic seniority starting at 1045.

Also, for anyone who hasn't noticed, I've updated to version v0.1.1. New download link above. I haven't actually tested it yet, and might not get the chance today, so please report any bugs. Check the second post to see the changes that were supposed to be implemented since v0.1.

Edit: v0.1.1b (beta)

It might be an idea to reset some of the succession laws, when or where native dynasties were replaced by foreigners; or when (gradually) features from other cultures where adopted.

In case of the former, in the British Isles, that would mostly be Normans (and their successors); in case of the latter AFAIK (might be wrong) Scotland (at least their monarch and (part of the) nobility) did adopt Norman or even continental feudal ideas, at least from the reign of David I of Scotland (onwards).
