Wow. Should mebbe start making refueling stations along the outer arms, once they get beyond 4 jumps from Sol.

I've been stockpiling a few million litres of fuel at each of the colony worlds... Dravar XV, the Nexus and Sigma Draconis A-II. As more Orbital Fueling Stations come on-line, I'll tow a few out to those systems.

I have decided against refitting our scout ships to the new Scientist class... it turns out that the refits would cost 90% as much (and take 90% as long) as building new ships. We've already explored more of the galaxy that we could colonize and exploit in a hundred years... we will just stick with our current scout ships for now.

The Pratt Shipping Company has launched a new passenger Luxury Liner... the Titanic. :(

... what could go wrong?

Who said the AI doesn't have a sense of humor?

A scientific team led by Dr Morozov has succeeded in raising our research rate by +20%. He has now started work on redesigning our Missiles to incorporate the new technology found in the Sigma Draconis ruins. Those ruins have now been fully exploited, as the last site yielded nothing of note. Still... with a free research lab and a free tech, this group of ruins was much more profitable than the first group. Hopefully, the Prix ships in the adjacent system are guarding another, more intact set of ruins.

EDIT:

June 20th, 2033. Dr Morozov has completed designs for a new PD Anti-missile missile. It will travel at over 34,000 kps, reaching its maximum range of over 6 million km in only three minutes. Its manufacturing cost is only about 5% higher than our previous design. He has now started work on larger missiles, and expects to have the entire series of designs (size-1, size-2, size-4, size-8) finished by early winter of this year.

EDIT:

Commander Henkalv aboard ESN Hugin has located two new star systems near The Nexus, Giclas 243-50 and Lalande 21185. Between them, they contain one Mars-like world and two semi-habitable worlds, plus the usual assortment of rock-balls, gas giants, moons, etc. Two of the planets have thin Nitrogen/Oxygen atmospheres.

EDIT:

The Nicaraguan Salami-Seals have offered us trade access. Obviously, they want to be friends more urgently than we do... our own relations regarding them are only at +174, 26 points short of reciprocating their offer.

Well, while obviously this is not absolutely ideal, trading with them might at least lend us SOME small profit, until we can take them out.

What's the ETA on the refit and additions to the fleet?

Three of our four Carriers have completed their refits to Mountain-II class, with the fourth refitting and a fifth and sixth under construction.

Two of our five Cruisers have completed their refit to Attitude-II class, with two more refitting, the fifth awaiting a free slipway, and a sixth planned.

Three of our five Destroyers have completed their refit to Star-II class, with the fourth and fifth refitting and a sixth under construction.

The Cruisers are the slowest because only two suitable slipways are available, compared to three each for the Carriers and Destroyers.

Over 50 of the new-model Fighters have been built, enough to equip all of the Carriers with a few left over for defense of Earth. Production of new Fighters and new Missiles continues.

The fifth and sixth Orbital Fuel Stations will be finished by the end of the year, and we are tooling up to build a new line of faster Mule-II Freighters and some Drop Ships for our Space Marines. Designs are nearly complete to build some Salvage Ships for salvaging and disassembling wrecks... hopefully, we can salvage some advanced components in that Prix-held system adjacent to Sigma Draconis, and gain a tech or two.

It looks as if the Terran Empire under the watchful eye of Lord Blue Emu has gotten pretty cozy. Around 50 star systems discovered, certainly enough to fulfill Earth's resource problems (given time), multiple colonies in existence, friendly aliens and an ever improving financial situation. Nothing urgent and looming on the horizon, the Prix appear to be precursors or at least not infringing on us otherwise and the only big mission is the invasion of a prespace planet filled with Nicaraguan Seals.

Not to Jinx it but things are looking good.

I think I'll try to take out that wreck-filled Prix-controlled system before deciding what to do about the Niceraguan Space-Salami-Seals. The potential gain from stripping those wrecks is huge, and Prix warships are often found guarding ruined outposts that are in pretty good shape for Xeno-analysis.

Hey, people... here's a really odd but interesting idea... are these puppies worth building?

Rock class Support Vessel 33,750 tons 556 Crew 1891 BP TCS 675 TH 2700 EM 0
4000 km/s Armour 10-93 Shields 0-0 Sensors 1/1/0/0 Damage Control Rating 1 PPV 0
Maint Capacity 35 MSP Max Repair 38 MSP

Ion Engine E0.8 (18) Power 150 Fuel Use 8% Signature 150 Armour 0 Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 200,000 Litres Range 133.3 billion km (385 days at full power)

CIWS-120 (8x2) Range 1000 km TS: 12000 km/s ROF 5 Base 50% To Hit
This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

It's a Civilian vessel, therefore no maintenance needed. It's as fast as our Battle Fleet (4000 kps), and has eight anti-missile CIWS (Close-in Weapons Systems) as its only armament, plus TEN layers of armor. The idea is to park a couple of these puppies out in front of our fleet to serve as Missile target for the enemy... almost no missiles should get through those eight CIWS systems, and ten layers of armor should absorb a huge amount of punishment even if some missiles do get past the point defense (in theory, even a 99-point warhead would fail to penetrate without multiple hits in the same spot).

It costs about 3/4 as much as a warship, but can be built in a civilian yard, so it doesn't compete with warships for available slipways.

Rock-Class Shieldship. I like the concept. Dunno how well it would work in game, though.

How large are the populations in our colonies?

Mars : 32.8 million
Dravar XV : 1.84 million
The Nexus : 1.26 million
Sigma Draconis : 0.43 million (but with three more expeditions already en-route carrying colonists and life-support infrastructure).

Commander Arnold Kiwi Rimmer in ESN Maxwell has discovered an Earth-like, class-0 world in the Mu Hercules system, Hubwards of Earth and only two jumps from our colony on The Nexus. Atmosphere a bit thicker than Earth's, Nitrogen 77% / Oxygen 23%, average temperature +15.7 degrees centigrade, gravity 1.09g, 88% oceans / 12% land surface. Looks very nice. Primary very similar to Sol, three rock-balls, five rocky planets (one class-0, three marginally habitable), one super-jovian, 20 moons, no asteroids, no gas giants. We will have to send in a scout to check for Aliens, as soon as one comes available.

Sounds like a nice planet indeed :)
I bet this one is inhabited by Evil Mutant Carps at tech-level 5, though...

The shield-ship is an interesting idea. It begs to be tested, just to see if it works.

Actually, I count more than 80 systems on the galactic map ;)
That's already a sizable part of the whole map. Though exploration might slow down a bit if all our future discoveries are 4 jumps from Earth or more.

It wouldn't bother me much if exploration slowed down a bit... it will take us centuries to exploit the section of the Galaxy already mapped. We have more urgent matters to focus on, anyway. Our mineral crunch simply must be fixed... if we actually run OUT of either Duranium or Corundium, that will be the end of our ability to build automated mines, and then we'll NEVER solve the resource crisis.

The only rough spot in that new class-0 system is: no asteroids, no gas giants, and only 20 moons. Sounds like that system will be short of minerals, although it's only two jumps from the Nexus (which has nine jump points), so there ought to be plenty of other mining opportunities in that general section of the map.

It wouldn't surprise me if the new system was already claimed... a large fraction of the good systems we've found have native life in them.

All hell is about to break loose, isn't it?

So, what sort of nasty aliens on this planet...

Chestbursters?

Mind controlling slugs?
