We've got lots of Fighters available, and with this alien contact, it's entirely possible that they might see some action.

Lt-Commander Raaritsgodzilla is now in command of a Fighter. You have Crew Training 50, Fleet Initiative 133, Fighter bonus +20%.

Your fighter is armed with three size-4 SCRAM anti-spaceship missiles, with no reloads... you need to return to base to reload.

You are in Squadron #2 under CO Konstantin Mikhailovsky

Huzzah!

The communication breakthrough will come. Even though they DO have the Northern Cyrpus flag

Communication established!

... now we need to improve relations enough to start setting up some treaties with them. Doing that will further improve relations. You need around +750 or so to ally, and it's hard to pick that much up one or two points at a time. Treaties will help a lot.

Question... do we send in a scout to find out for sure whether that planet belongs to them? This degrades relations slowly (although we will be gaining points faster than we are losing them)... but it also risks an attack by one of their ships which will automatically put us at war and degrade relations to -150.

Or do we wait for a non-aggression treaty to rule out that possibility, THEN scout them out?

Hey! According to the Galaxy map...

... WE control that star system! Unless this is a "limited intel" situation, that can't be their home system.

MSG ESN von Haast @ somewhere to Fleet Ops Survey
Willing and able to proceed to Groombridge 34
All crew prepared to do their duty
Awaiting orders
- Commander Rackham out
MSG ends XXXXX

I say send a survey craft. We need to know what's going on there, and it's worth the risk now contact is established. Meanwhile, ramp up military production and prepare to (hopefully) colonise the system, even if there's nothing of value.

Speak softly until you know you have the bigger stick.

More Diplo progress... our team has improved twice, from +105 skill to +110, to +115.

Up to +41% relations now.

This is good, we'll soon be able to trade tech and money with them! :)

MSG ESN Ptolomy @ Ross 248 to Fleet Ops Survey
New jump point found in Ross 248 system
Coord 2.2 b-km bearing 185 degrees from Ross 248 => Sol jump point
Will investigate unless recalled
- Cmdr Chaos out
MSG ends XXXXX

MSG ESN Ptolomy @ TZ Arietis to Fleet Ops Survey
New Ross 248 jump point leads to TZ Arietis system
Primary is Red Dwarf
One super-jovian three gas giants one rocky world
Fifty-seven moons twelve asteroids
No habitable planets or moons
ESN Copernicus remains in Ross 248 system
Will remain here and explore TZ Arietis for jump point exits
- Cmdr Chaos out
MSG ends XXXXX

Good going so far. I guess we must have arrived in the Groombridge 34 system before them. Not bad since it appears to be worth annexing.

I still think I should be sent there with the sorium harvester. Otherwise our naval activities in the system will be severely limited until some sort of colony is established.

Of course, it doesn't help that my ship is 16k tons, has no jump drive and no other bigger ship exists now that could assist the jump...

After eighteen months of dangerous and painstaking work on Procyon VII, our Xeno-archeology team of Julius Strange, Coinneach, Avernite, Seli and Trajan have finally made a breakthrough!

They have managed to enter the underground section of the ruined Alien base, and the records that they obtained and translated give them the locations of NINE sites on this planet where our Engineers can dig up artifacts of the extinct Alien race. We will need to wait until we have built at least one Troop Transport ship (currently being researched) before we can exploit this wealth of Alien data. The records also indicate that the original owners of this planet had called it Dravar XV... and from now on, the planet will be referred to under that name.

Well done to the Xeno team! Julius Strange, Coinneach, Avernite, Seli and Trajan have been awarded the Xeno-archeology Badge.

Excellent news, xenotech could come in handy given the dangerously unkown situation in Groombridge 34. When do you estimate you could get engineers out there?

First we need to finish the "Troop Transport Bay" technology. Then we need to design a ship, wait for a free shipyard slip, gear up the shipyard to build our Troop Transport... and then build the ship. Several years, in total. Say... three to seven.

The "Xeno-archeology Badge" is a lesser award than the "Order of Paradox", worth about 1/4 as many Promotion Points. I'm thinking of creating and awarding an "Alien Contact Badge" for the Diplo team... but perhaps we should wait until they can actually negotiate a treaty with the Grooms.

Three to seven years is a long time. Would it be worth having one basic troop transport (perhaps with another role?) at game start for situations like this, so that you could leave shipyards geared for warships, scouts and freighters etc, or would it take too many research and build points needed elsewhere?

Agreed, I don't think medals should be awarded to the team only for them to screw up and start a war.

You can only tool a shipyard for a ship design that has been created and you can only design ship if you have all of the techs researched. Those techs are not going to be researched very early by anyone unless they are "cheating".
