This would be better music, but that is just my silly opinion. :p

Making a better war-machine for Transylvania?
if you want some nice inspiration, look at Qin-reforms.

Manowar is awesome, agreed!

And the Qin reforms are a pretty interesting read, thank you.

Excellent, an update. :D But no map? :(

Well since I lost most of the screenshots from that time period I can't remember exactly what was gained with the world, so I figured I would save the map for next update just so that random provinces don't appear and disappear between the two.

This Chapter’s Mood Music

Life attempted to return to normal after the First World War, but the politics of Europe had been forever been transformed by the events of the war. Transylvania no longer was a middling European power resigned to the Balkans, scrabbling upwards for recognition, no, Transylvania was now indisputably among the major powers of Europe, standing strong beside Austria, France, Scandinavia, Great Britain, and Spain. Even Lithuania, after having taken a beating at the hand of the Transylvanian Empire was willing to set aside the grudge, and the two found themselves in an uneasy alliance.

Ferenc was aging as well. He had grown a bit wiser over the time that he had ruled the Empire, but fits of what can only be described as insanity still overcame him, and one such happened in early 1580 as he ordered 6,000 Transylvanian soldiers to board transports that would take them across the Atlantic to go and take land in the New World. It was seen as an entirely frivolous waste of money by most, and there was even a small riot that broke out in Koloszvár (which was quickly and brutally put down) when they learned what he had spent their money on.

Nonetheless, the Transylvanian fleet left port, and arrived off the coast off the Aztec’s lands in Central America in June of 1580, and the landing of fully armed Transylvanian soldiers was as good a declaration of war as any. Unfortunately for the soldiers, and for Transylvanian military commanders in the campaign, nobody truly knew what lay beyond the coast, and so splendid tales of 12 foot giant Cyclops and man-eating plants were commonplace. What they found instead was a mob of Aztec soldiers moving towards them. The Transylvanian navy had left, having taken terrible damage to the ships over the hard journey across the Atlantic, and so these 6,000 soldiers would need to hold their ground against the 18,000 strong mob that was barreling down on them.

These were soldiers of Transylvania, the beloved devils of Europe, and furthermore these soldiers were veterans of the North African campaign against Egypt just years earlier, and were led by the very same Marshal of Transylvania that had led them to victory there - Zabanius. The natives had numbers, but the Transylvanians had technology, discipline, and a killer instinct, any one of which would have been sufficient. All three together was overkill for the battle, and the Aztec’s main army felt the sting of defeat deeply.

The Army of the Americas pushed onwards, driving deeper into unchartered lands, but instead of the fantastical creatures of mythology they had heard rumours of, instead they found more men, more enemies. 6,000 Transylvanians against the might of the Aztecs.

But while reports made their way back to the Empire’s homeland by fast schooners, a cloud descended over Transylvania’s western border. Spain, furious over the loss of its lands in the Levant and the rebellions that threatened to overthrow their government, they took revenge on Transylvania in the only way they could – excommunication.

Unfortunately for Transylvania, this presented the perfect opportunity for their old friend and ally to terminate the long standing alliance between the two powers. A new king was on the throne of Austria, and he wanted the growing Empire on Austria's eastern border brought to kneel before the Holy Roman Empire; the Habsburg-Plater alliance was in tatters. Soon after the Lithuanians cancelled the alliance, and then the Scandinavians as well; the last vestige of the Grand Alliance was dead.

Transylvanian armies were rushed to garrison old border defenses that had not seen a Transylvanian soldier for a century. The Austrians responded in turn, and soon there were over 300,000 soldiers of both nations massed along the border – a giant pile of kindling waiting for a spark, willing the enemy to show a sign of weakness that would bring them surging across. Ferenc was terrified of the possibility, and so signed a quick peace with the Aztec that gave the Empire a foothold in the Americas for future expansion.

The Treaty of Belize, February 20th, 1580

Ferenc tried to reconcile with the Austrians, but their new king would hear none of it. He wanted war, and no amount of bribery that Ferenc attempted could dissuade him. Attempts to repair the tattered relations between the two states was met with a slew of diplomatic insults. However, Lithuania was willing to reconcile, and the two states signed a formal alliance once again, shortly after Spain’s lands in the Levant which had been over-run by rebellions declared their independence. The excommunication was even lifted from Transylvania by its vassal Crete, but still the Austrians would not budge. They wanted the lands of Hungary, and Transylvania would not give them those lands willingly.

The Lithuanians declared war on Polotsk in 1584, and Transylvania grudgingly accepted. Austria might have taken it as their opening, but the Transylvanian armies massed on the border showed the Austria that Ferenc knew where his prioities lie, and who the biggest threat was to Transylvania. It certainly was not Polotsk who was annexed into the Lithuanian state in April of 1585. But Ferenc would not see what would come of the rising tensions between Transylvania and their old ally, as he passed away in his sleep on April 21st, 1585. A regency council took the place of the throne for a few short months until Ákos returned from his trip to Georgia. For the most part, the Empire was happy, for it would not face down their old ally Austria with Ferenc leading them. No, Transylvania had another warrior who now sat upon the Throne of Conquerors.

And so another of Transylvania’s warrior kings ascended to the throne; Ákos was not even a man yet, but he willingly entered the ring and faced down the Austrian titan with defiance shining bright within his young eyes.

Long live the Emperor!

Transylvanians in Mexico? Excellent.

Also, the end of the alliance with Austria was kind of a shock. I can only imagine how it felt for you when you got the message.

The Eagle of Transylvania and the Eagle of Austria will soon clash... And only one will be able to soar the sky afterwards.
