Can't say as I saw that one coming either... It will be interesting to see where the landing took place.
A West Coast landing would definitely create a challenge, since the US could build up enough infantry to crush you
before you could take out enough IC.

Maybe that's the goal, lure all the American forces to the west coast, while finishing Europe up. Then move his main army to the eastern coast to take the IC untouched. Either way, this is interesting to say the least!

i think it might be alaska. Take that draw units up through from the mainland and canada, bomb them to hell with some planes invade further south and encircle them!

It is a very long way to Portugese coast (not mentioning all those Italian and other troops) and Atlantic wont be secure with Home Fleet (and American carriers) so I do not see invasion on Eastern Coast in less than one year.
It definitively will be an interesting year!

NICE!

America might need to start caring about what happens in this war!

And I thank you for the cookie awarded.:D

Ahriman - Welcome aboard and thank you :)

lifeless - The Emperor prefers to keep his forces active and some were getting a little fat :)

ColossusCrusher - It might be them kicking me but we shall see.

Kaiser_Mobius, serutan, Zvetiki, Beppo, Austria Hungary, Reado, zdlugasz - I like to be a little unpredictable at times and it is nice to see that I can still surprise you guys :) The landing force came from the southern Pacific and I have bombers in the northern Pacific.

Boblekonvolutt, Col, Velko, Pier - Thank you :)

Herr Doctor - Not only the Norwegians. A lot of the Allied Countries have small but effective Interceptor forces that have periodically been of some annoyance.

Sokraates - Those two updates were more or less ready. The reason for the invasion is explained in the monthly meeting.

Nathan Madien - Thanks. Nowhere is safe from the Emperor :)

KaiserMuffin - :D

rule_them_all - Nothing to be afraid of, tis only the United States :)

Raaritsgozilla - Oh the U.S. is fairly safe but they do have concerns closer to home now.

AdmiralNelson - I had some idle troops and the AI is the AI :D

Connavar, OneArmed - You should know by now that cliffhangers are inevitable :D

Avatar018 - Thank you. Overstretched? Me? Never :)

Panzer6 - For some reason I am not surprised that you know the minutes of a meeting before it happens :)

Reado - The only place in range of my Transport ships is Alaska :)

zdlugasz - The eastern seaboard is not close to being in range, so a year is a good estimate.

elbasto - Texan Oil would be nice to have :)

Maj. von Mauser - Thanks and your welcome. The United States needed another invitation to participate in the War :)

Monthly update to follow ...

Update (August 1st 1949)

0000 August 1st 1949.
Imperial Palace. Tokyo, Japan.

"Good morning your Majesty, Gentlemen." Hideki began the Cabinet meeting. "Some major progress has been made in some areas during July but our objectives still remain far from complete for 1949.

- Reduce the United States Navy to below fifteen Aircraft Carriers.

- Reduce the Allies to below twenty member States.

- Capture Europe with the exception of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

- Capture Africa.

- Capture all territory in the Mediterranean Sea and purge the sealanes of enemy shipping.

- Destroy the Comintern Alliance.

As we will see from Minister Kuniaki the United States has less than fifteen Fleet Carriers at this time but the goal is to keep them below that number on December 31st. All of our other objectives are progressing but some are looking increasingly unlikely."

"Your analysis of each please Mnister Tanigawa." asked Hirohito.

"Yes your Majesty. The American Carrier numbers and the destruction of the Comintern Alliance are attainable with little difficulty. Reducing the Allies to below twenty member States is possible. Capturing Europe is unlikely as the Italians have failed to commit their forces early enough as well as some other difficulties. Africa is almost certainly out of our grasp for this year because of travel times and enemy forces and the Mediterranean is similar to Europe because of Italy. We will, of course, continue to push hard in all areas to try and obtain our goals for the year." replied Tanigawa.

"Our goals were deliberately set to be very difficult but possible. I am not totally unsatisfied with our progress as we have taken significant steps towards those goals. Please continue Prime Minister." stated the Emperor.

"Yes your Majesty. We will begin the monthly briefings with Intelligence this month."

"Good morning your Majesty, Gentlemen. I continue to try and infiltrate our enemies with agents with limited success but our main adversaries are well covered and the reports on them are accurate in most cases." began Kuniaki.

aug1490000intfra.jpg

"No change to French production capacity and they completed research into Practical Turbojet Engine and Modern Static Anti-Air Artillery. Neither is likely to be of much help to them.

The French Army has not had a good month. They lost a further eighteen Infantry divisions and one Armoured. Their forces are spread thinly across both Europe and Africa which is causing them a lot more trouble than us. There are no signs of help coming from either the United States or the United Kingdom. The British remain guarding their home beaches as far as we know and the Americans just received a rather large shock which may keep them occupied enough to force them to keep their own troops at home."

The Emperor looked at Tanigawa who answered without pause. "It will be covered in the Armed Forces briefing your Majesty."

"The French Airforce remains without any aircraft and their fleet is unchanged." Kuniaki continued after receiving a nod from the Prime Minister.

aug1490000intger.jpg

"I have included a couple of other reports this month so that we can clearly see that the Allies are not hiding forces. West Germany only has six divisions."

aug1490000intita.jpg

"The Italians are still resisting my attempts to add to my agents which makes the numbers inaccurate. My estimate of their Infantry strength ranges from forty to eighty divisions. Their Airforce is likely to contain more bombers than shown and their fleet is small and not increasing."

aug1490000intuk.jpg

"British industry continues to run at full production with no shortages visible. They completed research into Modern Marine Divisions.

The British Army is growing slowly as they are not committing their forces. A further Infantry division was added during July.

No real change to the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy increased by two smaller ships. My agents inform me that they are gathering their strength at home and seem reluctant to commit forces anywhere."

aug1490000intus.jpg

"American industry lost eight factory complexes to our advances in Europe but this will have almost no affect on their production. They completed research into Intercontinental Strategic Bombers.

The United States Army lost two Infantry divisions overall and it is far too early to say what their reaction will be to Operation Cherry. No noticable change to the Airforce.

The United States Navy has had one its worst months of the War. They lost six Aircraft Carriers in the Indian Ocean to our bomber forces as well as numerous other ships. My agents tell me they lost a total of four Carriers which means they launched two new ones.

Our own research teams completed Advanced Decryption Devices and Assault Concentration Doctrine. Nothing more from me today." Kuniaki concluded.

"Industry please."

"Your Majesty, Gentlemen, good morning." Ginjiro began. "Industrially we are growing stronger by the day as we bring additional production online from captured Allied complexes in Europe."

aug1490000prod.jpg

"Twelve additional factory complexes were added during July but our Transport Capacity remains totally inadequate to supply all of our forces at one hundred percent. Capturing factories is being offset by an increase in partisan activity. Our convoy system is occasionally being overloaded but on the whole is keeping up and I am building more.

Our resources have managed to stabalise very well as we captured some enemy Oil stockpiles in Europe. My only concern is Manpower. We require 6,000 new recruits to cover our current losses, which is far from ideal, but as most are for aircraft it is not critical ... yet.

Production dropped a little as I halted Military Police production as we are no longer raising Garrisons. Supplies in general are increasing and replacements are largely constrained by Manpower. Upgrades are to some Interceptors and our Headquarters. We are probably going to complete research into Turbojet Escort Fighters in August which will require upgrades to our Tactical bomber squadrons but I have ample spare production capacity to cover such a situation. Nothing further." Ginjiro concluded.

"Armed Forces please."

"Good morning your Majesty, Gentlemen. July was a good month in most theaters. With one exception the Pacific remained quiet and Minister Osami will cover the exception. Africa is going very slowly but we are advancing in all areas except the center where we will deploy a bomber group to halt the current Allied advance. On the ground in Europe our plan from last month was executed and it has gone a lot better than we had hoped. There were very few Allied troops to halt our progress and we also managed to destroy their entire southern Army which was not predicted. I hope to continue good progress in August and I would like to engage the Yugoslav and Italian armies if possible.

At sea things have gone exceptionally well. The United States Navy lost two Carrier Task Forces in July which indicates that they have only two or three Carriers not in their main self defence fleet. Because of these successes I would like permission to begin Operation Petal your Majesty."

"The forces are mustered?"

"Yes your Majesty."

"Proceed then."

"Thank you your Majesty. Over to Minister Satoru for more details." concluded Tanigawa.

"Your Majesty, Gentlemen, good morning. Thank you Minister Tanigawa. I will begin with an update on our most experienced forces." Satoru began.

aug1490000expair.jpg

"The Imperial Japanese Airforce remains our most experienced force as it almost never rests and is meeting very limited opposition. Our Close Air Support squadrons are suffering losses in Europe to anti-aircraft fire which makes our Tactical bomber squadrons largely more experienced."

aug1490000exparm.jpg

"Headquarters divisions dominate the Army but our Armoured forces remain prominent as some Infantry divisions begin to gain more experience from fighting in Europe."

aug1490000expnav.jpg

"Naval engagements have been few and far between which makes gaining experience difficult. IJN Chiyoda remains our most experienced ship with two of our older Fleet Carriers next."

aug1490000euro.jpg

"Moving on to theater operations I will begin in Europe with the Western Front. We have essentially captured Poland again and advanced into Hungary, Romania and Czechoslovakia. Enemy forces are scattered but there are some concentrations of concern."

aug1490000eun.jpg

"Looking in more detail we see enemy forces strong in the north and non existant elsewhere along the front. We know there are no enemy troops in Romania and it would take a miracle to prevent us from annexing Hungary in the next few days. We now know that the Yugoslav army is facing Bulgaria but it is very likely to move north once we enter Yugoslavia. We have every intention of doing so and we also hope to bait the Italians as well by moving into Austria.

Our main objectives for August are the annexation of Hungary and Romania, the destruction of the Allied northern army and to bring both the Yugoslav and Italian armies out from hiding. Annexing Austria, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia are secondary objectives."

aug1490000naf.jpg

"Africa has seen very little in the way of obvious progress but we have captured territory in the both the north and south."

aug1490000afs.jpg

"In the south we are advancing inland with long march times in most cases. We should capture more territory in August but the terrain is terrible with deserts and jungles hampering progress."

aug1490000afc.jpg

"The center shows the Allies advancing in the middle and us to their north. I would not expect any Allied troops to be able to reach their objectives before our bombers destroy them."

aug1490000afn.jpg

"July was a rest and re-organisation month in the north and we have just begun to advance again. Our troop numbers have increased and most are rested enough to move and fight. Two more divisions are also being redeployed to this region and are due later in the month. Enemy forces to the north consist of American Garrison troops which are not expected to cause us too many problems as we do have bomber support once it has repaired.

Objectives for Africa are to continue our advance in all areas as swiftly as possible. Over to Minister Osami for a briefing on ship losses and Operation Cherry." Satoru concluded.

"Thank you Minister Satoru. Good morning your Majesty, Gentlemen. As has already been mentioned we had a very good month at sea with enemy losses being higher than normal. We did lose one vessel ourselves, another Submarine Flotilla." Osami began.

aug1490000sunk.jpg

"Apart from the United States Navy Allied losses were restricted to Destroyers and Transport ships. Sinking Transport ships prevents enemy invasions and they are the second highest priority behind American Fleet Carriers. We sank six Fleet Carriers in the Indian Ocean including the elusive Admiral Calhoun's entire contingent. Some Escorts escaped but these are no real threat to our Naval security. Under normal circumstances I would be confident to say that we will not see any American Carrier activity for at least a month but circumstances have changed.

During discussions between His Majesty and the Imperial High Command over the last few months plans were drawn up for two amphibious operations as well as the continued War in Europe. One such amphibious operation is Operation Cherry and seven hours ago I received word that it had captured its primary objective without incident. Operation Cherry has one main goal. To draw the United States Armed Forces away from Africa and Europe. There was only one way to achieve such an objective as it has become clear that the Pacific is not of that much concern to the Americans.

Target areas were restricted but in early July we received intelligence from air patrols that conditions were ideal to begin Operation Cherry. After a brief consultation with His Majesty the operation began. Troops had been secretly gathered from the southern Pacific during June and early July and moved north to Attu Island. BC Division 2 moved to the island fromTokyo to provide Naval escort."

xjul24490000gr1.jpg

"At 0000 hours on July 24th BC Division 2 set sail from Attu Island escorting 2. Kaigun Transport Flotilla. The Americans had made a mistake and it was only right and proper to punish them for it."

xjul28490900gr1.jpg

"Four days later, at 0900 hours on July 28th, three Infantry divisions, led by Lt. General Yamazaki, began the invasion of Umnak Island in the East Aleutian Island chain. These islands are American soil and capturing any one of them would force the Americans to concentrate significant forces to their own defence. We did, of course, manage to conduct this operation in complete secrecy and I believe the Allies were caught completely unaware."

xjul30491700gr1-2.jpg

"Just seven hours ago, at 1700 hours on July 30th, Lt. General Yamazaki captured Umnak Island which is directly linked to the American mainland. Four Naval bomber squadrons and eight Tactical bomber squadrons will rebase to the islands airfield today."

aug1490000pac.jpg

"A larger view of the northern Pacific shows where Umnak Island is in relation to the North American continent. We can now directly threaten both the mainland United States and Canada. More forces are being made available and we have every intention of making a further landing in Alaska to gain another airbase and port facility to prevent American aircraft from bombing Umnak Island. Further intentions with Operation Cherry will largely be determined by the American response. That concludes the Armed Forces briefing." Osami finished.

"Where is Operation Petal going to make landfall?" asked Ginjiro.

"As it has not yet begun, and therefore has not made landfall, I cannot tell you Mininster Ginjiro." replied Osami.

"One of these days one of your secret plans is going to backfire you know and you will want me to rebuild what you manage to get destroyed."

"Possibly." Osami replied with a shrug.

"Well Gentlemen it seems that we have just poked our main adversary with a very big stick. It should be interesting to see how it reacts. I will see the Armed Forces Ministers after the meeting." stated the Emperor as he stood and left.

Ah, an incursion into Alaska! Why not, that should give the Americans a little headache. I would predict that this will also get their main fleet into action pretty soon...

And another secret operation is revealed!

I sincerely hope that the USA will actually respond to this incursion unlike they did after the Japanese conquest of Hawaii.

The reasoning, however, I find rather amusing: "We only invade to draw away your Air Force. After we have destroyed it, we'll leave. I promise." :D

audacious invasion- might be harder to pick off the US divisions in their own backyard though. better be prepared for a naval onslaught (what little there is left) :D

I love secret operations.

Would it be possible to speed up the advances in Africa with some amphibious assaults from the Atlantic side? With the American carriers being much less a threat than previously, there might be an opportunity for the BC fleet to move a few units along the coast....

Keep up the good work!

-- Beppo

It's strange to me that the United States has so few forces when it possesses 547 effective IC. Maybe it's limited by manpower? Either that, or incompetence. :D

Okay, Japan re-occupies the Alaskan Islands!

0 MP is not good. I don't think we've seen it that low in a long time...:eek:o

In the hands of a player, the United States can be a dragon. In the hands of the AI, the United States can only dream of being a dragon.

When I played as the United States, I conquered...I mean...liberated half the world.

I wonder if Remble ever been tempted to "nofog" the United States.

Very nice progress, Remble, but is there any way to increase your woeful manpower?

He could edit japanmanpower.txt, and change it from an AI-only event, which would bump him up to almost 3 MP/day, but I know he would never do that.

The Aleutians, eh? Fairly safe place for a diversionary attack - hopefully you should be able to pull your units out when it gets too hot...
