Winter Teaser #5 - Mendicant Mystics Making a Mess

Welcome comrades! We’ve not got anything major on the docket for the day’s dev diary, so we’ll be taking a little peak at a cultural tradition that’s dear to my heart instead. Just to whet the appetite for more content a little.

001.PNG

Mendicant Mystics is a moderately uncommon tradition, one that synergises well with faiths that already boost the mystic lifestyle. Moreover, though, there’s something that just _speaks_ to me, personally, about the idea of impassioned people wandering the world, sharing their wisdom and message.

Consequently, I’ve spruced it up a little bit, adding some flavour to the idea of living in a culture where wandering know-it-all is a valid career choice. To reflect this, the following events will all _try_ to grab characters from the pool first, so wandering characters of such a culture are often at risk of deciding to become a mystic once they hit the road, and if a mystic breaks in to annoy you once, there’s every chance the same mystic might come knocking a second time down the line...

002.PNG

After all, who better than a stranger covered in twigs and mud to teach your children some valuable life lessons?

003.PNG

Or, indeed, yourself.

004.PNG

Really, they’re altruists...

005.PNG

… of course, for some folks, the wandering may get too much eventually.

006.PNG

Hmmm, can’t really put my finger on why I like the idea of mendicant mystics so much. Something about them just seems delightfully familiar to me, I guess. Ah well.

Thanks for reading folks, and we’ll see you next dev diary!

I feel like something's going over my head here...
It's just occurred to me... tomorrow is Twelfth Night and Thursday is Epiphany (at least in the West). Is the post alluding to the Magi? I tend to think of them as élite, learned scholars rather than 'mendicant mystics', but I suppose that they did turn up at a ruler's court to lecture him, so I can see how OP might connect them with these events.

Agree.

I hope the next expansion is related to religion, specifically: religious orders, heresies, religious minorities, tolerance of religious minorities, the inquisition, papal bulls, religious hierarchy, college of cardinals, cardinals, archbishops, papal elections, elections of bishops by chapters of monks or canons, monastery holding type, papal confirmation of a chapter election or lay investiture of bishop, lay investiture vs papal investiture conflict, witch and heresy trials, better religious chivalric orders.
Which Papacy ??

Peter's or the true one.

You have several event chains for one trait? Oh yes!
I hope this means we'll have dozens of event chains for each trait... And for each cultural pillar and tradition...
I can dream. But please, make it come true.
Thank you!

Are the underscores a grammatical error, or a clue to new modder coding available?
Underlined text indicates text that has tooltips. It will usually be names of characters, religions, cultures, etc. in events.

I like these events and that there will be an attempt at least to use the correct people for the events and to have them appear more than once. It shows an interest from the devs in trying to make the events relevant instead of entirely random, which is a step in the right direction.

There are a few typos in the events that were shown, so I hope that they will check all of the new events for grammar/typos before release.

Events that flesh out some of the drier tenets and traditions are always appreciated, but I do panic a bit whenever I see an event option that lets you convert religions. The Adamite event is already such a problem, I'd hate to see more of that introduced.

Agreed, but this couöd actually prove to be a sensible new way for religions to spread. Think russian characters spreading orthodoxy among pagans.

There is a fundamental difference between a Catholic converting to Adamitism, a hearsay, and converting to Krstjani, which is Ecumenical. Even if the AI ends up being a little too eager to convert it isn't going to cause as many problems.

Yeah, I don't mind so much if it's just special for Krstjani. My worry is that it's a generic event and Krstjani is just one of the possible faiths. There does not seem to be much work put into to regulating how often this sort of event fires, and if it's available to other cultures which might not have such a natural heresy like Krstjani for Bosnian, it could get out of hand very easily.

I think it's a generic event, because there's nothing in the title, text or choices that's specific to Krstjani recent the name of the faith and "gost", which could be a simple localisation for LOC_MONK_KRSTJANI or whatever religion is randomly picked.

In principle I could see an interesting system built on this general idea of wandering preachers, but I would not consider a random event where the AI just randomly picks "yes I convert", available only to cultures with this specific tradition, to be a sensible way for religions to spread. It's just chaotic. Perhaps if these preachers were sent by nearby powers, as they were in real life, or if the heresy built up steam from local rumblings to finally reaching the royal court, with decisions being made on how to handle it along the way.

Seems like for the first one, the closest to a reasonable answer is the most extremely negative, which is still very generous. He just broke the door and we're expected to be friendly? He should at the very least be financially liable, and if you're petty and tyrannous, it wouldn't be beyond expectations to imprison him, and a rancorous warrior might cut him down where he stands! Yet the most you can do for what is at best vandalism and at worst invasion is to send him peacefully on his way?

So you're saying if I pick this trait I get a bunch of pop ups which I cannot disable through notification settings which dont exist in CK3? More over if I have ANY of these culture people in my empire I will get pop ups from their cultural wandering goons meaning the amount of pop ups which I cannot avoid has increased tremendously?

Unfortunately a lot of Ck3 events are written as though everyone in the world is completely insane and extremely dramatic. Par for the course at this point.

It's not religion-specific, it's culture-specific. So it applies to whatever religion(s) are present in that culture. It sounds like you could just as easily have a Catholic or Orthodox wandering priests converting people as you would have Kristjani, and is limited by whichever religions are already present and in the counties of those cultures with the Mendicant Mystics trait.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I don't want it to be the case that if any minor heresy happens to arise in a local county of a culture with Mendicant Mystics, that suddenly kings and emperors are at risk of converting via this event. It's not so bad for some specific instances like Kristjani, but it could quickly get out of hand when applied to arbitrary faiths (even with the restriction of having this cultural tradition). The heresy system is already extremely chaotic and just picks random characters to convert, adding even more randomness on top of that via this sort of event is a step in the wrong direction.

That seems fine to me. That is how a lot of faiths spread in real life after all, especially in the case of smaller faiths gaining prominence by converting local rulers.

Do you have an example in mind of a real faith that spread in this way? I can think of examples where a ruler was converted by a preacher sent by a neighboring state, but I'm not familiar with any cases where a wandering preacher managed to convert a ruler.
