Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

Is there a game rule specifically to disable achievements? I sometimes like to play around with cheated overpowered stuff, so I wouldn't want to unlock some due to this. ;d

About the Ironman requirement:

I honestly only play Ironman because if not I’m always reloading when something goes wrong (I’m too mentally weak I guess).

But I don’t dislike putting away the Ironman requirement for achievements for one simple reason: it is still possible to cheat in Ironman (in EU4 for example I found out a way to use console commands in Ironman).

So, if Ironman was this 100% safe thing where you know its impossible to cheat, I could find an argument in favor of making it a requirement for achievements, but it’s not the case, so just let people get achievements with mods, game options changed, etc.

Now you've just removed that joy without adding anything for me. I still won't care about achievements and won't sink hundreds of hours to unlock a single one. But for hardcore players who simply like to extra challenge, their achievements will be compared to mine: a save scum, cheater and modder of the worst ilk. It's not fair.

As someone who hunts achievements, the bigger point here for me is that UI/QoL mods won't keep me from achievements (CK3's checksum logic is ridiculously strict to the point where even many of the most basic UI mods block achievements). I would much rather be able to play with mods that make the game more fun while I hunt achievements than deny achievements to those few people out there actually cheating to get them.

I've removed my own achievements with Steam Achievement Manager. Multiple times (mostly while testing mods).
Didn't know that and that is helpful to know, but I'd rather have a way of doing these sorts of things without messing around with external programs.

I still think being able to disable achievements for a save, or to have a separate list of Ironman only achievements, would both be nicer solutions.

As I never play Ironman, I thought this Dev Diary was going to be irrelevant to me, but it turns out otherwise.

I am still unlikely to bother hunting achievements unless they are all incorporated as Journal Entries, which seems a no-brainer now that they are universally available. However, this change will have the useful side-effect that all players will have access to some basic telemetry about the game (e.g. what proportion of players reach 1936). That should help to inform discussions on this forum.

If you're okay with people modding/console commanding their way to an achievement in a matter of minutes, why not just abolish them entirely and let players set their own challenges?
I know people (mainly but not only geeky men!) who enjoy collecting sets of everything from locomotive numbers to photocards of K-pop singers, so it makes sense that some people would enjoy collecting Steam Achievements. It's not my interest but it's pretty common and it's great that PDX and Valve let them enjoy the game in their preferred playstyle.
For people wondering, "why change what works":
  1. It doesn't work. Only about 20-30% of players even try ironman, judging by the easiest achievements. For the vast majority of players, they might not event exist.
What is not working here? I don't want to play Ironman and I don't care about achievements. Yes, they might as well not exist for me, but that's no reason to stop other people having fun with them.
  1. The new players, who are just climbing the learning curve, would benefit a lot from the little encouragement in the form of achievements . And they are the least likely to use ironman (unless they are masochists).
Few if any of these achievements are well designed for rewarding players on the early stages of the learning curve.
  1. Some people also can't play without mods. I'm talking accessibility and translations. Why should they miss out on it? (and yes, translations also change the checksum now )
This is actually a good point, to be fair.
Seeing how techs also spread regardless of your own research (see Dev Diary #27: Technology (can't link, gets flagged as spam)), that wouldn't make much sense. Even if you won't be able to research everything yourself, as long as someone else does, it will eventually reach you anyway.
"Eventually" is doing too much work in that sentence. Techs don't spread instantly, so the game design doesn't guarantee that everyone will to get all of them by 1936. If no-one discovers Wireless Telephony (or some other advanced tech) until e.g. 1932, there's not necessarily going to be enough time for it to spread to you. Although the hints we have had in the Tech dev diary and the AARs suggest to me that actually completing the tech tree won't be overly challenging.

Curious, is there going to be a HoI4 like list of achievable achievements in game? Given the nuance could be a nice QoL feature for achievement hunters.

While some achievement hunters (aka masochists) might dislike this change I think for the vast majority of the playerbase this is a great change. So many times I've missed achievements because I'm playing it with several mods and never bother rerunning it on ironman.

Also, for people rueing the 'dilution' of achievements, well, steam achievements can be unlocked with external programs anyways, so technically every achievement is moot. Which is kinda the point, they're worth depends on the eye of the beholder.
I'm not really sure, I thought the majority of player simply don't care? Myself don't care, and judging by "marry" achievements in CKIII, most player won't care either. I don't mind if achievement-hunters get their satisfaction, I'm not really sure how this is a big deal to most players.

Is it though? A lot of them will be available for every country, and others are very specific to be constantly reminded of them. I think a separate button for them like we have in latest games now is a perfect solution

I think the point a lot of people who are pro this move are missing from a lot of people who are against, is that "a platform where you can see the progress of others" as a result of achievements is sort of moot if a lot of that progress could just have been made with no effort.
This is such a hilariously bad faith argument. Basically every other game allows people to get achievements without having to play in a special mode and the number of very basic achievements that people don't get is kind of high. In Civ6, only 40% of people on Steam have finished a game on the basic settings! The amount of people who would cheat to get an achievement is incredibly small, if they actually exist at all.

there are plenty of people who would be happy to go for achievements if they didn't require ironman because they don't like ironman. this allows those people to get achievements and aim for them without using a mode they don't like. you are still free to play on ironman and go for achievements - no one is hurt by this
This, so much this.
Ironman was always a pain for me, simply due to the excessive autosaves, which hindered the flow.
I do not really gun for achievements (and would never open the console to get them), but that feature was not accessible to me, simply due to that annoying ironman requirement. It does look weird to have hundreds of hours in a game, but not a single achievement..
Sure, I do also sometimes reload when I mess up a war declaration, but the loading time is also punishment.
Having the console available for certain things is helpful, simply to fix issues that sometimes crop up - and for satisfying my curiosity about parts of the map that would be hidden for centuries to come.

Thank you. Setting achievements free is a huge improvement over the previous player-hostile policy, and I'm delighted to see it.

I look forward to being able to play with all my little mods to change localisation, increase immersion, and tweak the game to my tastes without missing out.

A mechanical note: please also let mods disable achievements when not appropriate (e.g. a different start date that may satisfy some of these on day 1).

If my argument is bad faith, then so is this "every other game doesn't do this" non-argument I've seen bandied about. Most other games I've played don't have easily accessible debug tools that allow me to instantly win if I feel like it. You may well be right in that I'm overestimating how many people would cheat if it was easier, but doesn't inexplicably void my concerns or observations. I'm being disliked into oblivion on this thread when all I've really argued for is to continue letting achievement hunters hunt achievements in their own way and let everyone else who already didn't care continue to not care, and made justifications for that when prompted.

I've even seen some pretty good opinions for compromise but I know that actively responding in agreement won't count for much when people seem so goddamn determined to be factional.

Also, to further prove the "but the cheaters!" argument is BS, here is a video from YouTuber PotatoMcWhiskey. It is about "cheating" to get certain achievements in Civ6 by winning on turn 1 from good RNG. One specific achievement he singles out is "Splitting the Atom." which requires to start a game in the Atomic Era and win. In his video the achievement percentage is 0.8% and on Steam it is currently. . . . 0.9%! Literally all you have to do get it is start a game, play one turn and get some good RNG and the number changed by just 0.1%! 125,000 people have watched that video and the number barely even changed. People aren't cheating, legitimately or otherwise, to get achievements. Its a non-issue.

if 20 people use console commands specifically to, for example, get the achievement for treaty ports in Europe as the Qing (originally wrote Sikh, oops), does it really affect your enjoyment of the game significantly?
