Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

Ironman is an incentive to have people overcome challenge honestly. Without Ironman, there is no achievements that can't be completed on the second tick.
I really did like that paradox achievement really felt like achievements, but sometimes one bug or a misread one my part made me have to restart an entire campaign. (As an example for hoi4 Austria Hungary achievement i accidentally finished peace conference before I had everything). Without that Ironman requirement it allows people to still have that satisfaction without having to play the same way again and again. Personally when I cheat in games it makes them less fun anyways so this isn’t a big deal for me but I get your concern here, incentives for not cheating are definitely nice.

Clearly not as there are many achievements that less than 10 people have ever earned without cheating. Some achievements are insanely hard.
Not because there is only 10 achievements available in the world, but because everyone else but those 10 people couldn't be bothered to do it
That's not what scarce is, just like that's not what you described as competitive is

Skill-based scarcity is still scarcity. Having something other people don't is what makes it scarce.

but those 10 people couldn't be bothered to do it

Nope. Some of the best players in the entire community couldn't do it.

Some achievements are genuinely hard to achieve. Although, PDX seems to be deadset on making them as easy as possible. Clearly.

People that have some rare skill wouls then go and test their rare skills against each other and rank them in some way. Then this skill usage will become competetive, not before
Just 10 people acquiring achievements isn't a competition
Now being a first person to acquire that achievement IS a competition, because you can clearly measure how one of those 10 people is somehow better than everyone else in this.
Steam Achievements don't track anything like that, therefore they are by definition are not competitive

Ok, go try to find who did "The mother of us all" in CK3 the first ever time we should congratulate him for winning in this particular competition.
Or check whether have I completed it once I'll lock my profile
How can you compete if you don't even know who the participants are or what the achievements of a particular participant are?

By definition it is. Trying to be in the top percentile of something is competition.

Now being a first person to acquire that achievement IS a competition

Completely an arbitrary distinction. So does that mean being the second person isn't competitive? The third? 4th? 5th? Where exactly do you draw the line?

How can you compete if you don't even know who the participants are or what the achievements of a particular participant are?
Because of a little thing called statistics.

A person doesn't need to know they beat "Bob Johnson who lives in North Carolina". They only need to know that they beat 98.77% of all of the people who own the game.

Competing for the top percentile of something is still competition.

Well, yes, the lines in competition will be arbitrary, with some boundaries and rules. Like in any competition. Why wouldn't there be?

By the way, it is PENGKAI at 09/02/2020 08:10:50. All of the names of the people who have earned the achievements and when are public.

Also, I'm not finding you on the list so I don't believe you have achieved it, but I might have just missed your name.

So you're winning in a competition among people who don't understand the difference between collecting and competition, congrats

Still competition whether you agree with it or not. Like I said. Your idea of what constitutes competition is simply wrong and is more akin to specifically sports competition rather than competition as a whole.

You compete with other humans every day of your life. Whether you realize it or not. Know them or not.

Well, yes, the lines in competition will be arbitrary, with some boundaries and rules. Like in any competition. Why wouldn't there be?

Competing to be in the top 5% is no more or less competitive than competing to be in the top 1% or top 0.1% or "first place".

Gran Colombian and Mexican achievements are great though, really excited to go for those. I love trying to be the great American power as, well, not the USA (or any other ..A in the same location)

Sooooo, you would like to participate in the competition in something you hate? Just for the sake of competition.

It is no longer a competition as achievements are just being given away for next to no effort.

I was never an achievement-hunter. But I understand the rationale of those who are. I also enjoy(ed) watching people get achievements. But now that it is insanely easy to console command your way to achievements there goes that form of entertainment.

It is no longer a competition as achievements are just being given away for next to no effort.

I was never an achievement-hunter. But I understand the rationale of those who are. I also enjoy(ed) watching people get achievements. But now that it is insanely easy to console command your way to achievements there goes that form of entertainment.
you can still watch people go for them in ironman or whatever as a challenge, no options are being removed. it's so weird to me that people feel as if they're somehow constrained by other people's abilities to complete achievements on their own terms

I don’t get this idea some people seem to have that everyone and their mother is utterly desperate to cheat achievements and they'll all be sitting at 80% completion. It’s ridiculous and refuted by plenty of evidence from other games. There will still be achievements with low completion percentage.

Even if we accept that completion percentage is an important metric and achievements are all about competition, a few extra people cheating will have basically no meaningful effect on most of the percentages in a game that will likely have over a million if not several million total players.
