Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #55 - Achievements

16_9.jpg

Hello and welcome to yet another Victoria 3 development diary. Today we’re going to be talking about Achievements, and since I think absolutely everyone reading this already knows what an Achievement is, I’m not going to do the usual what-is-this-feature preface. But before I get to listing all the achievements that Victoria 3 will be releasing with, we do have something to announce in regards to achievements which will differ in Victoria 3 compared to earlier Paradox Grand Strategy Games, namely that Ironman and an unmodified checksum will no longer be required to unlock achievements.

That is to say, no matter what mods you have installed and whether you’re playing ironman or not, all of these achievements will be unlockable. There are a few game rules that disallow achievements, but since you could simply mod away that requirement if you wanted, not even this is a particularly hard rule. The reason for this change is simply that after quite a bit of discussion among the designers, we’ve decided that for Victoria 3 we want to emphasize access to achievements for everyone, even if that may end ‘devaluing’ the achievements in the eyes of some players.

Now then, with that out of the way and without further ado, I will get to listing, in no particular order, the 50 achievements that will be available in the release version of Victoria 3!

That's the same as saying that counterfeit money is no big deal. Ironman is an incentive to have people overcome challenge honestly. Without Ironman, there is no achievements that can't be completed on the second tick.
Tell me, what will you buy with your achievements? Since they don't have actual monetary value, comparing them with money is odd at best.

I just wanna say how happy I am with the achievement changes. When I'm not achievement hunting I tend to add in a lot of flavor mods (such as VIET/RICE for Ck3, Missions Expanded for EU4, R56 for HOI4, etc) and this is HUGE. One of the biggest issues with HOI4 and EU4 is the amount of achievements for nations without any flavor, and this should hopefully fix that. AND this means my alt-f4 days are over. It will be so nice to just... Save and load a backup if a diplo play goes poorly or something.

My only question, is there a way to disable the console in a non-Ironman game? Perhaps a game rule? It would be a nice option to have so I'm not tempted to cheat, but can still benefit from being able to save/load anywhere.

I'm sort of the same, its nice to have the option to remove that temptation, even if not full ironman.

I know there’s not many of us, but a lot of people forget that there’s people who play Paradox games on the Microsoft Store, where Xbox Achievements are unlocked. The Xbox Achievement community is much larger than the Steam Achievement community, so for folks like us, it matters more.

I don’t seek achievements to compare myself to others, I just have severe problems doing anything that’s not “productive”, so achievements trick my mind into thinking I’m doing something “productive”, while also trying to relax some.

I just hope the Gamescore valuation for each achievement is reasonable (unlike EUIV)

I really like that you are finally decoupling Ironman and Achievements.

However, I would love for a setting to be enabled that only allows achievements to be earned when we want to be able to earn them. This setting/game rule would only allow playthroughs we want to earn achievements in to be able to earn achievements. This would remove an "accidental" achievement from being earned in a ridiculously modded playthrough if we didn't want them.

That's just my two cents! I'm someone who likes to console command what a nation would own if they fully complete their mission trees, or unite all cultures into separate countries. So I know I would be kinda sad if I accidently earned an achievement doing that.

Anarchy in the UK: Starting as Great Britain, have an Anarchist form of government.
View attachment 868636

How would this work? Isn't anarchism against any and all forms of goverment and hierarchy? I find it hard to imagine an anarchist central goverment. It sure sounds like an oxymoron.

I always play Ironman, but I also always use mods (mostly those that make the game harder, improve the UI or fix blatant flaws in the game). At some point I consciously decided to go for some HoI4 achievements and it was the most mind numbing endeavor imaginable, because so many basically just were *go down this national tree path*, so speed 5 and drinking some tea it was. Maybe I'll rate the cheevos in my next post.

You can still get achievements in Iron Man.

Yes, but why would I when there is a significant chance that other people do them with all sorts of cheats? And yes, I know that there were all sorts of ways to "cheat" ironman in various scales, from birding (which I did myself) to outright unlocking achievements with a third-party program. Ironman lock isn't the main issue here, checksum depreciation is. If I see say the result of a THOT run on reddit, I can recognize that this run was with overwhelming likelihood done within the constraints of what I consider "legit". If I see the result of an American territory run, I have no way to know just how much rules bending has been going on beneath the hood.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but the post clearly says that there are 50 achievements.

You only posted 45 of them. I counted.

Why?

They're just taking a queue from economists and accountants and playing with the numbers to better suit their needs. It's very meta of them. ;)

First, I am super excited about next week's diary. Second, all of this is awesome! Many are just pretty fun playthroughs with extra challenges instead of unrealistic map painting and other annoying stuff like RNG dependent achievements. Many of them are also just stuff you would try in a normal game of say Mexico or Russia.

Such a shame I will get every single one of them on day one with console commands to make ironman die-hards mad!

As a guy that ALWAYS plays with Ironman enabled and no mods, and a big achievement hunter as well, I am really happy to know that people who play differently would still be able to enjoy gaming with achievements. Achievements exist for me to be proud for being able to take them, not for me to being able to show the others that I did them.

ULTRA EASY(Congrats you started the game and played until <certain point in game> with country <xyz>)
These are bottom of the barrel achievements that have no requirement other than passing enough time in the game until you press the right button or get it automatically
  • Perkeletankki: Starting as Finland, produce at least 100 units of tanks every week.
  • Anarchy in the UK: Starting as Great Britain, have an Anarchist form of government.

EASY
These require some basic knowledge of the gameplay mechanics to optimize your country in some way
  • Peccavi:Starting as the British India Company, fully own the states of Sindh and Punjab.
    • While the Sikh Empire is the strongest contender in the region, it has no chance unless China or Russia help it
  • Belle Époque: Starting as France, have the highest GDP per capita and Innovation generation in the world.
    • Might require a minimum of game knowledge in regards to economic planning
  • Reading Campaign:Starting as a nation with less than 20% literacy, get to 100% literacy.
    • Considering a 100% literacy nation doesn't exist in the world, this would be quite the achievement, but something tells me it won't be all that hard
  • Poppydock: Have at least a level 8 port and export at least 2500 units of Opium to foreign markets.
    • Actually this should go to Ultra Easy, but...I guess you have to at least plan a little bit?
  • Inventive: Research all technologies across all three categories.
    • Might require basic knowledge of game mechanics

MEDIUM
These achievements require careful planning and precise execution
  • Mohammed Ali’s Ambition:S tarting as Egypt, form Arabia and own Thrace.
    • Heavily bordering easy territory; once the Ottomans are out of the picture there is nothing stopping you
  • The Western Protectorate: Starting as Great Qing, have a treaty port in France, Germany, the British Isles, Iberia and Italy.
    • By endgame you will probably be able to war the entire world on your own anyways as China
  • Star-Swarmed Banner: As the United States, have 100 incorporated states represented on your flag.
    • Who can stop the player-led USA from conquering America? Nobody.
  • Billionaire: Have a national GDP of at least £1 billion.
    • Automatically achieved when you do The Western Protectorate
  • Grander Colombia: Form Grand Colombia and own all land in the Gran Colombia, Andes, and La Plata strategic regions.
    • Not all that strong at the start of the game, it will depend on how much USA and European powers decide to meddle

HARD
Depending on world circumstances it might not be doable or you must be a very well learned player
  • Luxurious Luxemburg: Starting as Luxembourg, be the leading producer of Luxury Clothes, Luxury Furniture, and Porcelain.
    • OPM start, will probably have to form Benelux or some meme country, it's easy if you can form Germany which I dunno
    • It might require suppressing China to dominate in Porcelain(do they have a special PM?), France and USA strong contenders in LC and LF production
    • Depends very much on how strong the AI is on release(will be easy lol)
  • An Empire Under the Pun: Starting as the Sikh Empire, subjugate Great Britain.
  • Barbary’s Back: Starting as Algeria, retake Algiers and become a Major Power.
  • American Territory: Starting as the Indian Territory, have the USA as a subject with no more than three states.
    • Realistically(and videogamemically) this shouldn't be possible so: Just play the game, do the meme
IN TOTAL
  • 27 Participation trophies
  • 5 Easy
  • 5 Medium
  • 4 Hard
  • 4 Unrated
Make of that what you will, but personally I am not a fan of these no-brain achievements. Everything below easy might as well not exist.
