Stellaris Dev Diary #95: Humanoids Species Pack

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. As said last week, today's dev diary is not about the Cherryh update at all, but rather something much more imminent: The Humanoids Species Pack

Humanoids Species Pack
Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, there has been a lot of clamoring for more portraits and another ship-set like the one we added in Plantoids. Because of the amount of coder and content designer time we're putting into the major overhauls in the Cherryh update, we ended up with a lot of extra art time, and so we decided to oblige. Back in the Heinlein update, we added a bunch of free humanoid portraits that proved to be immensely popular - close to half of games started is with some variant of humanoid. Combine with there seeming to be a demand for a more 'classic western sci-fi' ship-set with sleeker lines and curves than the Mammalian one, and the design for the Humanoid Species Pack was born. Our artists have been quietly working away at it behind the scenes, and now it's almost ready.

So what's in the Humanoid Species Pack? Here is the feature list:
- 10 new Humanoid portraits
- A completely new ship set inspired by classic western sci-fi
- A new city set for Humanoids
- A new pre-scripted empire, the Fanatic Authoritarian/Materialist Voor Technocracy, with a portrait inspired by the 'loading screen aliens' from our own official art
- 3 new advisor voices offering alternative takes on existing ethics, based on the United Nations of Earth ('Dignified Xenophile'), Commonwealth of Man ('Disciplined Militarist') and Voor Technocracy ('Ruthless Materialist'). Samples from each of the new voices has been attached to the bottom of this post.
- 3 new music tracks that are remixes of classic Stellaris songs

Of course, the 5 Humanoid portraits that are already in the base game will remain free and available to everyone.

Yeah people having very different ideas on what makes an ideal universe. Personally I like space elves, would even go for demon creatures and space cthulhu. The only way to make everyone happy is the ability to pick and choose what species portraits are allowed to be pulled or not.

On a side note, I wonder if they have considered making a space monster ship set. Think of space horrors as space stations, and other critters to make the various ship types.

It seems we now have Humans, Elves, Dorfs/Halflings and also Tieflings.

DnD in stellaris, anyone?

Or a DnD world that's advanced in technology, unified its races under one banner, and set out explore the galaxy together.

Such a thing would be possible if they let you create an Empire with more than one secondary species and without needing to use up a civic slot.

tbh, i'm getting more of a shadowrun vibe from all of this.

I mean it's just not the same unless i can get a good WAAAAGGH!!! going so that my race stripes are extra fast and my Roks can get me to kill sum hummies really quickly.

(for the uninitiated, orcs in 40k are slightly warp sensative, so much so that when a bunch get together their beliefs start effecting reality. so when they paint race stripes on rockets to make them go faster, it works. that's how 40k orcs get away with doing crazy stuff)

I remember when they did a poll a while back asking whether people wanted the next update to focus on war or diplomacy. War clearly won, but I don't think they just decided to can their Diplomacy reforms after this DLC. I'd prefer it the way they are doing it now, that being taking one lacking area of the game and giving it all the focus for an overhaul to make it fun. Rather than piece by piece patches on lacking game systems. Rip up things that don't work from the foundation, rebuild them in ways that do, then move onto the next area.

I'm sure within the next major update or two after this we'll see big time changes to relations, galactic communities, and abilities to interact with other nations. If I had to guess we'll probably see buildable titans/dreads in this coming war update.

First, has anyone posted a link to Imperial March yet? Because that's what this is making me think of. Those ship sets are absolutely fantastic.

Secondly, are there any chances in the future of like a bigger set of like new ship sets and species portraits? Like a big set called perhaps "Infinite Diversity" or some such? It would be cool to have more variation between all the aliens, perhaps even have some ship types be more in line with certain ethics.

No new name lists planned for 1.9, though I'd like to do a general expansion of them in the future.
It would really help if you removed name lists from the checksum calculation, so we can mod them and still get ironman + achievements. I mean it's not like a better name list has any effect on the actual gameplay, right?
