Stellaris Dev Diary #77 - Ethics Voice Packs

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. This week’s diary I’m taking charge and going to write about Voice Over’s for the (unannounced) Story Pack coming alongside the 1.8 ‘Čapek’ update! We still can’t tell you any further details about the name or release date of the Story Pack, but stay tuned for future dev diaries!

For the upcoming Story Pack we felt that we wanted to experiment with VIR, our friendly advisor, see how it would feel to have different set of VO cues depending on your Empire’s ethic. A VO Cue is a term that we use to describe a Voice Over line that triggers at a certain point in the game as for example “Hostile Fleet Detected” or “Research Complete”.

We started with a test case in-house to try it out and we concluded that it was a great experience! From then on we moved on with the process and allocated time to write unique script for each role, character description, casting, auditions and finally recording sessions. It has been personally a long and hard process but in the end I’m really pleased to finally show of 3 samples out of 10 Voice Packs!

There will be a automatic settings for the VO Packs in the game so that the VO will switch depending on what Ethic you start with in the game and also switches while you're playing if you decided with switch Ethic's in your campaign. If you're not into that you will be able to select with set of VO Cues you want to play and you will always be able to switch back to the original VO if you desire.

Now that you have heard some of the results you might ask yourself how the whole procedure works with recording VO? So I’ll describe to a certain detail how the whole process goes by. :)

First of you need to write a script and if you have talented Content Designers. and we do have in our team, there is no problem to get good a script. Once the script is complete and approved it gets handed to me and I take it to the next step: Casting!

Casting of it’s own is also a long process which takes time. With help of a Casting Director you can get in touch with several possible Voice Actors that can help you to deliver the best result out of each script. When you have picked out potential actors that you think will suit for the role, you bring them in for a audition. In an audition you let the actor read a certain part of the script which usually depict the character the most and also give the best material for the Voice Actor so that they can perform as good as possible. After all the auditions are done you pick the actor that suited the best for the role. Sometimes during auditions actors comes for a certain role to read but during the session you realize that the actor would be more fitted for another role and that happened to our Militarist! We brought her in to do a audition for another role first but while she was reading the part for the first role I heard that she might be better suited as a angry general, so I asked her to try out for the Militarist and it was a really good fit! So good that we ended up with her as the Militarist.

With all the casting/auditions done you move on to the actual recording session, get as much possible material from your actors. It is important that you’re there to act as a “director” for the actors so that you can give the instructions and guidelines so that they can give you all the right emotions and takes that you require for your character in the game.

As soon as the recordings were done I moved on to editing. There is a lot of editing when it comes to VO since it is not only about how the recording equipment sound but also the sheer amount of assets you need to go through..

VY1grVq.png

While editing you usually “zoom in” really close in the waveforms of the recordings to mess around/cutting noise such as clicks and pops. So yes, we Sound Designers tend to get really nerdy when it comes to VO editing:

aHHJbEZ.png

After you have done all the editing which is removing “clicks” and “pops”, ugly breath takes, add fade in/out, you move into adding “effects” to the VO so we can get that cool Robotic style. For each VO I gave them something else than just using the same settings as for “Default VIR”.

So in short terms that is how you record VO!

That's all for today! Next week we'll be talking about robots and robotic modification.

I mean, I guess if everyone wants to interpret that as him calling them sexists individually, no one can stop them. I certainly didn't take it as an insult to myself, but then I'm just one person, not a demographic.

Or is the community on this forum really so full of themselves that they think that as a whole and individually on a collective level, we are all of us flawless, perfect, and beyond reproach in any manner? That any criticism to the collective environment that this forum is a subset of is a direct attack on the individual that dares call themselves a member of it in any capacity?

That doesn't even make any sense.

It didn't take long for Aspec to also react to this Dev update.
And surprise, he also doesn't feel the militaristic one.

And holy cow look at all the comments, most of them are about not liking the feel of the militaristic one, so far none of them about it being female.

You know, if that VA was paired with that script, it would have worked.
I am actually only vaguely familiar with the meme around that scene... not the biggest fan of the militaristic theme Japanese anime tends to portrait
But whatever, I still play stellaris with touhou portrait mod so who am I to judge :p

It's been fun, ASpec, but looks like Paradox will black list you for your evil misogynist ideals. How dare he not like the female voice?!

What's hilarious is that they apparently sat around and convinced themselves, in advance, that there would be a misogynist backlash, so when they got a backlash based not on gender but rather on the fact that the characterization was demented, Wiz immediately concluded that this was just a smokescreen and that in fact it was 80-90% misogynistic. There are two quotes that come to mind here:

01. "When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.", and

02. "When you are the one hearing the 'dog whistle', you're the dog."

Yeah, I read that. More insanity. It sounds like what Wiz meant to say was "We deliberately will try to make this about political correctness, so make sure to counter every argument with "That's just your misogyny". Don't be surprised if the VOs for the other ethos were chosen out of some kind of PC quota instead of over merit.

Just for the record, that guy's voice kind of drives me nuts, too. Hope they don't pick him for the VO talent for the Materialist faction!
I think Paradox has a bone to pick with ASpec since he always finds ways to break Stellaris. So no worries.

If you believe almost everyone is a misogynist, you're probably a sexist.
The Alt Left (Tumblr and PC culture) is sexist. The first thing they see is your race and your genitals. You are instantly discredited if you are white and/or male. God help you if you complete the trinity by being straight. So what you're saying is actually true.

That's a bit obvious though isn't it? The only real difference between Alt Left and Alt Right is which groups they are prejudiced against.

Here's the thing: No matter The validity of such criticism, if we had picked a male voice, even one that sounded far 'crazier', we would have gotten at most 10-20% of the complaining we've gotten now. I make no judgment about any individual critique but this is an observable enough fact that we literally accounted for it in our planning. That's all.

You know, the annoying thing is, this post is insightful and I could have agreed with it. If not for that ridiculous 10-20% number.

Now, to be fair, Wiz isn't saying 80-90% of the entire fanbase are frothing misogynists. He is only saying that 80-90% of the people complaining about this VO are at least subconsciously misogynists, and that they wouldn't be complaining otherwise.

That's still ridiculous. Even if 80-90% of the complainers were, in fact, frothing misogynists (which I do not believe)... There's still a pretty good chance they'd have the same complaints about this VO coming from a male. Like, being a misogynist would give them a 100% chance of disliking this female VO, but it doesn't mean they would magically love any VO done by a man.

If Wiz had said 70-80% instead... Yah, totally would believe it. Hell, maybe even 50%, I'd agree. I mean, without actually testing a similar male VO, any number is just being pulled out of one's ass, but 50% is at least believable. 10-20% is not. At least not to me.

And regardless, calling 80-90% of the people complaining even subconscious misogynists is a little bad PR. I mean, let's say they actually are 80-90% misogynist. The ones who know they're misogynists won't care what you call them. The ones who think about it, and realize they'd like this VO coming from a man, well good you made them realize their misogyny. The ones who think about it and decide they'd dislike the voice, man or woman? You've insulted them and made them realize nothing.

Disclaimer: I'm at work, haven't listened to the VO, and since it's optional I probably don't care how it sounds and it's good there's at least one bloodthirsty option. Also, I have on multiple occasions, in RPGs, chosen the VO described as "bloodthirsty female" so I think I'm cool with whichever :p

Love all three samples, I think they fit their respective ethics perfectly. For the people complaining about the militarist tone - I think that all of the voices are supposed to capture the "essence" of the ethic/be fanatical versions of the ethic. If you made militarist highly disciplined, it would probably end up sounding very similar to authoritarian. Anyways, the point is moot since you can simply change to another voice set it you think it doesn't suit your empire. I sure as hell know I'll be using the militarist voice set for my next FP empire.

Really? But if you saw the Utopia trailer, Commonwealth of Man, that is Fanatic Militarist, have a Female Leader and it's not like this one. I mean, she have as advisor the leader of the Orchish Horde?

Fanatical Purifiers are not even Fanatic Militarist... and you are saying the Militarist voice fits more to a Fanatic Xenophobe than the Xenophobe.

For those too young to have heard Colonel Corazón Santiago from Alpha Centauri speak.

If "ork horde" militarist voice is kept, I'll be saddened that the inevitable "Santiago Militarist Voice" mod will invalidate achievements.

This is very very good and much like how I had my expectations based on the Utopia Trailer.

post removed - Had a dad.
A lot of people who are Anti-SJ in this current era are Anti-SJ because a lot of vocal SJW's say things like this, or they do the very things they claim to be against but direct it towards a different group.

They label everyone who disagree's with them as a homogeneous group who's only reason to disagree is that they are horrible people. It's the exact same tactics their opposites use.

People are people are people. The day we all do something for the same reason is the day the universe breaks out of shock.

I don't think he's saying that 80-90% are actively misogynistic. I think it's more that the culture we live in doesn't have many examples of that type of female character. Picture the blood knight sterotype. Whether it's in sci-fi or fantasy it's almost certainly going to be a male character, because it's associated with traditionally male stereotypes. The angry, zealous warrior is a male thing and has been since the Templars.

We naturally compare new things to other, similar things in order to judge how we perceive them. If most items we have to compare the new thing against are of a single type (in this case angry, older, male) then of course we're going to flag it as sounding wrong. There's a reason Hollywood goes for British bad guys (as Paradox has here with the xenophobes) and it's not just because we do condescension really well.

That said, I don't think the Militarist voice struck quite the right tone for the blood knight either. Too gravelly, which didn't work with the VO's voice very well. I think she'd have done better doing something akin to the Farseer in Dawn of War I. Angry, but disciplined.
