Stellaris Dev Diary #71: The Adams Update (part 2)

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. Today's dev diary is the second part on the 1.6 'Adams' update, with a couple more breakdowns of features we wanted to highlight for the update. Additionally, we're also going to post the full 1.6 patchnotes, along with an announcement of the release of 1.6 'Adams' on Tuesday, May 9th, the 1-year anniversary of Stellaris' release! Save games from 1.5 should be fine to be continued in 1.6, but we will as always provide the ability to roll back your game to 1.5 if you experience any issues with your save.

Devouring Swarm
A new addition in 1.6 for those with Utopia is the Devouring Swarm civic. This civic represents a Hive Mind that is hell-bent on consuming or absorbing all other life in the galaxy and has no use for diplomacy with those that are not part of the Hive. Devouring Swarms have the same diplomatic restrictions with other species applied that Fanatic Purifiers do, and will effectively be unable to conduct any diplomacy besides wars and insults. Like Fanatic Purifiers, they get no additional tradition cost from alien Pops and get a boost to society research for each Pop they devour. They also get significant boosts to Army Damage, Ship Hull Points, Society Research and have a small amount of constant hull regeneration on their ships.

We have also fixed regular Hive Minds so they can choose to displace rather than devour non-Hive Mind Pops.

Terraforming Enhancements
Another new addition to 1.6 is the 'Ecological Adaptation' technology that can be researched after Atmospheric Manipulation and allows for terraforming of inhabited worlds. Terraforming an inhabited planet will leave the sentient population alive, but give them slight happiness penalties while the process is underway. You can still only terraform planets that are either owned by you or uninhabited but within your borders.

Additionally, for those with Utopia we have also made some slight adjustments to the World Shaper perk. When it is taken, you will immediately unlock the Atmospheric Manipulation technology (if that technology is not already researched) and will be more likely to have other, more advanced terraforming technologies be available for research.

And now, without further ado, here are the full patchnotes of 1.6. Click the 'spoiler' button to show them. Enjoy!

Literally from the beginning of the dev diary "We have also fixed regular Hive Minds so they can choose to displace rather than devour non-Hive Mind Pops."

This is no longer an issue unless you choose the new Devouring Swarm civic, which is essentially a fanatic purifier and is going to have everyone hate them just like purifiers do.

I don't remember right now, but doesn't displacement also have negative impact on opinion?

If so, the cap for each negative topic opinion is still valid.

Note: I really don't remember and I can't check it (my pc is on repair)

It probably means the window that pops up when new anomaly is found.
That would make no sense, though. The patch note states that the change was to include the name of the system in the interface. That pop up window has the zoom to location button, and you need to be looking directly at the anomaly on the map to open it without it having its own spot in the interface like DEBRIS has. Why would it matter if the system name was included on that pop up window?

Very nice!

Just one question, though: is there still no way to, after achieving synthetic evolution, converting people I assimilate into clean, tidy, superior synthetics?

Synthetic stills needs some love though.

1. Cyborg has some strong bonuses for fire rate that are lost when you switch to Synthetic
2. They don't auto grow which makes playing them a ton of mouse clicks to get them to build. They really need to grow on their own once your race becomes them.
3. You can't make other races cyborg once you evolve which means you can't add anyone else into your race anymore
4. Now that you're taking away "share the burden" it lessens the want to fully move your race over as you can just make your own robots and get the bonus. Most people going that route already have a ton of robots and fewer people so you get a bigger and better bonus by NOT fully embracing the path which shouldn't be.
5. Honestly there IS NO benefit to switching over. If you want to make it worth it their robots need to be just flat out better. Like stronger then normal synths AND auto grow

Also did you fix it so that when you're transcended and have another species become psychic that THEY become the founder species? Also when that event pops up it never mentions who will get it just "all (blank) pops...".

Not that it was worth doing since if you helped them out they became the new founder species currently

@Wiz

With Synthetic Ascension losing Share the Burden and no mention of the fire rate difference between Cybernetic and Synthetic admirals which is extremely substantial from a game play perspective.... I feel like we are missing some information. The only conclusion I can draw based off these patch notes is that going full Synthetic ascension is going to actually be full on sub-optimal to remaining Cybernetic.

I'm sure I and a few others want to know: is it a patch note omission? A design decision that we are perhaps missing some crucial point of? Maybe it just got completely forgotten somewhere along the way?

That being said, I love all the other notes.

Unbidden making planets barren is AWESOME. One of the reasons why I love Prethyron so much is how they infest planets and leave them barren. Even if you win the war, everything they ate will not come back, and the space will be empty and lifeless.

Perhaps not much more difficult, but if nothing else changed (AI crisis response behaviour!) then it will definitely get a lot more tedious. Especially should the barren planets they leave not be terraformable.

I wonder if one of the two new planet modifiers has something to do with this.

"Annihilated world" -"allows terraforming" -"this world has been wiped clean by the unbidden, but it is not entirely lost"

If not, perhaps you could make yet another mod to handle reclaiming such lost worlds in your spare time? ;)

I stopped here and had a Hallelujah moment! Best thing here, at least in my opinion.

Is "The Flesh is Weak/Synthetic Evolution" counting Robot Pops as those who need to be "upgraded"? I've seen ASpec mention its bugged like that currently in one of his videos.

Also:

* It is now possible for Fanatic Xenophobe Spiritualists to be Fanatic Purifiers

Aw... I was hoping the limitations on this would be opened up more. I want to play as a Materialist Fanatic Purifiers empire. Changing the requirements to 'Fanatic Xenophobe' and 'is not Pacifist' could open up a few more purifier styles.

Also, any plans to add same markers on galaxy/star system map for terraformable barren worlds?

Currently, when you play with mods that change your starting system (e.g. Gaia/Ringworlds) and your empire goes the flesh is weak path, your species changes the habitability to those two types (100% Ringworld habitatbility and the rest 0%).
Would this be fixed?

Would this be fixed?

That would be nice to know, but it is in fact even worse. If your homeworld is terraformed to another planet class you would get that planet preference for your pops. So if you really want to upset someone in multiplayer, cede his homeworld, purge everybody there, then terraform. Once he does an ascension all his pops end up with the wrong preference...

I did not went so far, just used a change_pc event on my homeworld, then fired the "The Flesh is Weak" event to test it.

If it is still like this you would shoot yourself in the foot with a gaia transformation on your homeworld (even though not needed there because of the homeworld buff)
