Stellaris Dev Diary #185: Announcing Necroids

Hello everyone!

Today we bring you some exciting news about our upcoming Species Pack! We’re happy to announce that our next species pack will be themed around death and should allow you to live death to the fullest! Check out the trailer below:

Necroids will feature:
  • 15+1 new portraits (the +1 being machine)
  • 1 new Ship Set
  • 1 new City Set
  • 1 new Room background
  • 1 new Origin
  • 3 new Civics
  • 1 new pre-scripted Empire
  • 1 new Advisor Voice
We wanted to add ships that had a more sinister or evil appearance, and I’m very happy to say we’ve made something really great. We’ll go into more detail about the ships, and give you a peek into the art process, in a future dev diary.

True to the theme, we wanted the portraits to revolve around death, but not look outright undead or decaying. We never intended the Necroids to be specifically undead, but rather themed around death. Similar to the ships, we will be doing a dev diary in the future to give you a peek into the art process, and also reveal all the new portraits. Stay tuned!

Regarding the other features, we have already shown you some of them, such as the Death Cult Civic and the Memorialist Civic. The remaining features will be revealed over the next couple of weeks, and maybe you'll even get to learn about Jeff. But for now, let’s pass the Mishar Cabal into our memories.

---

General Donnten threw her bloodied axe next to Ostiir’s severed head. The others in the Leadership Council would remember this the next time they considered interrupting her in the Mishar Althing.

She pushed past the acolytes that were coming to deal with the corpse. They were annoyed - the rites were always harder if the head was removed - but they would just have to stitch it back together.

Smiling to herself, she left the arena. At least Ostiir would be an obedient little soldier now.

Tbh even the devs are winding down communication since Megacorp. Players got fed up with the issues in the game and there's a point as a dev where you give up because you aren't paid to deal with salty people (and I don't blame either side tbh).
I still remember how the playerbase basically revolted last year regarding the game's performance, especially after the whole mobile game debacle (anyway, is it still alive?) and the devs had to make a post to explain the situation. It looks like things may play out in a similar way this year as well with the AI problems.

I don't condone salty remarks from players, but it is understandable why they feel that way. Also, I guess when you're a dev and you see people complaining every day (some legitimate, some probably not), you may get fed up about the whole thing.

The Crisis AI expands very slowly and has all the flaws of the "reworked" military AI to boot (like pointlessly going to and fro). What you describe is what people consider "broken". I'd say that while it's not utterly broken, it's close to this stage (90% broken?) and it's inexcusable that it remained as such for years.
Are you meaning when they set their fleets to patrol mode? It generates experience for the ships and admiral. The AI might be doing that to better their fleet.

first, why would the ai farm xp during wars?

second, why would the ai farm xp in the first place, when xp has been a non feature since launch?

third the experience generated from patrols is negligible, if youd want to farm xp its better to "farm" pirates, instead of pirate threat

i would also like to add that if the ai is patrolling, clearly it's not making a good job since every empire is full of pirate's hideouts

While they are at war?I actually started a new game yesterday and I won my first war without ever fighting their fleets since the AI couldn't decide which of my two fleets they should attack.

Congratulations on the new species pack! I hope the next DLC is a big one though, I never cared too much for the portraits but I do for the gameplay effecting things like new civics, they seem to be on the low side in this pack.

Sadly, given the state of the AI in this game is dreadful, I will wait for another few patches before I do another round of Stellaris. The economy part is the most enjoyable in my opinion and it is marred by heavy micromanagement. The endgame is a chore and locking the auto-migrate option behind one of the policies was a BIG mistake. Stellaris got plenty of flavour now, the core game needs to have some polish to make it shine.

I'm still awaiting the mythical sector rework into something that actually effects gameplay instead of hindering you. Lots of good ideas where shared, for example making them behave like vassal duchies akin to CK2. Many sci-fi stories are centred around sectors or regions rebelling, something that is missing so far in Stellaris. A blueprint for planets was on the table too, as it gets very tedious babysitting all the building slots on your planets because there is no way to plan ahead.

The negative votes shouldn't be taken as a sign this species pack is bad, just that the community is upset due to multiple unfixed issues in the game.

Best of luck!

No hype, don't give them the money, and then they can fix the bloody AI.

This is the first DLC I will not be buying right away. I said this for LIthoids but honestly I was wanting lithoids for so long it was hard to resist (and I still dont have lithoid forum portaits wth?). I bought federations as I wanted to reward the delay of the game to try and fix it, but honestly, the games still in such a poor state.

I haven't played in like 4 months. Don't really have a desire to play the current game. If its not performance its the AI being bad, if its not the AI being bad its the empires being wildly imbalanced, if its not the imbalance its the boredom. Singleplayer you have to deal with how dumb the AI is, multiplayer whoever picks the right empire combo at the start ends up being dominant, even in an 'rp' setting.

2.0 had its flaws, but it was salvagable. 2.2 was a grave mistake, and here we are, a year and a half later, still stumbling around figuring out how to fix it.

While I've said species packs while they work on the game would be the best path....I'd also like to see some evidence that the game is actually being fixed.
