Stellaris Dev Diary #165 - Ready for 2020!

Hello everyone!

We’re finally back at the office and we’re very excited to be back working on Federations! We will be continuing to focus on AI and stability/performance, while also polishing our features. As a couple of examples of something we are working on right now; we are looking at the economic AI as well as making more unique behaviors for the end game crisis AI. As we continue polishing we’ll also be making improvements here and there.

To share some polish progress, as one example, we’ve added a new slavery type called Indentured Servitude, which will be a part of the Utopia (as its a part of the expanded species rights). We wanted to have a slavery type that works better for your more dystopian and evolved empires, which has a greater need for many specialists.

While slaves only have 25% political power of free pops, indentured assets will retain 75%.

As promised before vacations, we will be doing a number of Q&A sessions related to different topics. The first Q&A will be about the Federation rework and you can already post your questions. We will be answering some of your questions next week, on Jan 23rd.

Future topics:
Jan 23rd: Federation rework Q&A
Jan 30th: Galactic Community Q&A
TBA: Diplomacy Q&A
TBA: Origins Q&A
TBA: Mega shipyard & juggernaut Q&A

The reason why we cannot release an exact schedule right now is because there might be dev diaries related to other topics between the Q&A ones. The thread for collecting your questions will always be posted one week in advance.

We are looking forward to answering your questions and showing off more of Federations during the coming weeks!

I just want to know approximately how far we are from the Federations release. I want to start a new game, but I want a chance at having it finished by the time Federations is released.

Make assimilation separated from citizenship

Improving generic AI, economic AI and stability - that's really wonderful!

A few questions:

1. Any plans for migration rework (make it per species and per stratum, so pops migrating where his/her race has best climate conditions and job opportunities)

2. Can we somehow collect 'telemetry' about AI decisions? E.g. if AI is doing strange things, like hivemind not colonizing and sitting on his starting planet (in my current game that happened), open console and get some logs/stats pass them to PDX for debug.

3. A random idea that bugged me for a while. Could genetic algorithms be applied to Stellaris AI tuning?
Define AI as a huge set of numeric parameters, spawn a galaxy full of AI each having slightly different params.
Run for 100-200 years. Pick 3-5 winners. Produce new variants as linear combinations of winners from the previous round. Run again

Don’t worry. It looks like it’s a least a month or two away judging by this diary.

Very happy to see crises are hopefully being made working and terrifying again. Also really liking the new Q and A method. And the fact that Federations wasn't rushed out before the Christmas vacation. In fact I am cautiously optimistic that Stellaris is headed in the right direction again.

I have one for the juggernaut will ship production continue in battle
Say I start a battle with 10 days left on a battleship will I get an extra 10 days in

Now this, this is a great dev diary to start the year off on! I half-expected a feature-laden long dev diary that would also have indicated that release is soon upon us, but honestly, this is way better. We now know that serious work is going into polishing features (... into working order in some cases), and the new Q&A format is great - that way people can focus their questions outside of the general dev diary discussion, please, more of these in the future (past Federations)! :)

I cant wait for the new indentured assets slavery, finally will be able to fully exploit xenos by putting then at labs and factories and paying them only food.
Aaah scientists working for a ration of soup :) that's utopia right there.

If your AI is just sitting there doing nothing, a simple bug report with a savegame should be enough for us to take a look.

@MatRopert You are no longer working on EU4?Since when?
Thanks for any replies about this.
The Battlepope and I moved to Stellaris in December, you must have missed the memes on Twitter ;).

Well, there are five Q&A Dev Diaries announced so it's gonna be at least five weeks, probably more, as grekulf said that there will probably be other Dev Diaries between the Q&As.

Wow, this might look small but it completely fixes the slavery ethics. Up until now, you couldn't use it after mid game because it needed a minimum amount of slaves and as your economy grew, you simply needed more specialists than workers.

Now that specialists can be slaves too, nothing stops you from rolling slave nightmare states! Yay!
