Stellaris Dev Diary #160 - Origins Full Reveal

Hello everyone!

In our previous dev diary #155 we talked about Origins, and today we will be returned to the topic by going through Origins again, but in more detail.

Please note that although this is a pretty exhaustive list, there is no guarantee that these Origins will necessarily match what will be in Federations once it is released.

What are Origins?
Origins allows you to pick a background story for your empire. An empire can only pick one Origin.​

Prosperous Unification is the “default” Origin.

There are currently 18 Origins in the game, where some of them were converted from previously being Civics. Origins that were converted will be unlocked by the same DLC that they were unlocked by when they were civics.

Origins are not meant to be balanced against each other, but rather balanced within themselves (as in they don't start in severe resource deficits or "feel broken" by themselves). There are Origins that are "stronger" than other Origins.

The Origins
Prosperous Unification: Start with 4 additional Pops and 2 additional Districts. (Available to everyone)

Mechanist: Start with 8 Pops being robots, and the ability to build more. (Utopia)

Syncretic Evolution: Start the game with 12 Pops being of another species. (Utopia)

Life-Seeded: Start on a Gaia World. (Apocalypse)

Post-Apocalyptic: Start on a Tomb World. (Apocalypse)

Remnants: Start on a Relic World. (Ancient Relics)

Shattered Ring: Start on a Shattered Ring World. Your empire lives on the only intact section of the ancient megastructure, and it is possible to repair most of the other sections. (Federations)

Also starts with Habitat habitability preference.

Void Dwellers: Start on a Habitat above your destroyed, former homeworld, and with 2 more habitats in your home system. Completely adapted to living in habitats, and start with the technology to build new ones, but also suffers a penalty to living on regular planets. (Federations)

Scion: Start as the vassal of a Fallen Empire. (Federations)

Galactic Doorstep: Start with a dormant Gateway in your home system, which can be investigated and reactivated. (Available to everyone)

Tree of Life: Only for Hive Minds. Start with a powerful Tree of Life on your homeworld. Disastrous if you would somehow lose control of it. Colony ships also plant a sapling on new colonies. (Utopia)

On the Shoulder of Giants: Investigate a series of Archaeological Sites related to a mysterious benefactor. (Federations)

Meteorite colony ship.

Calamitous Birth: Lithoid Only. Start with a Massive Crater on your Homeworld. You are also able to build Meteorite Colony Ships, which colonize planets in a more dramatic fashion. (Lithoids)

Resource Consolidation: Machines only. Start with a Machine World as your homeworld. (Synthetic Dawn)

Common Ground: Start with as the leader of a Galactic Union federation, and with The Federation tradition unlocked. (Federations)

Hegemon: Start with as the leader of a Hegemony federation, and with The Federation tradition unlocked. (Federations)

Doomsday: Your homeworld is doomed and it will explode after 64 years, so you need to find a new home for your species. (Federations)

Lost Colony: Another empire with the same species as you will exist somewhere in the galaxy. (Available to everyone)

In the past people have complained that the content of each DLC is disconnected from the content of other DLCs, and lamented that this meant hives and machine empires would never get meaningful attention in new DLCs. So now these empire types do get some special attention, and now the complaint is you can't access some of the content without having two DLCs.
Well, this is just my opinion, but I think it's a case by case thing.

Like for example, you need Synthetic dawn, and Apocalypse to build a Nanobot diffuser, and that makes sense. Colossi should be locked behind Apocalypse, because that's one of its main features. But if you happen to have Synthetic Dawn, you can get a special function for it if you play as a Machine Empire.

On the other hand, Tree of life looks like it can stand on its own. And on top of that, content is already lacking for Hive minds, why lock it behind another DLC?

If you have mechanics/features from two DLCs, that's cool, and if buying both can combine them to give you something new, that's even better. But if it can stand on its own, then it makes more sense to just lock it behind one.

So many people in this discussion are complaining about balance, I hope that they will look at this part of the original post again. They're NOT SUPPOSED to be balanced. They're storylines. That's it. probably best is they're limited in some way in MP however.

So many people in this discussion are complaining about balance, I hope that they will look at this part of the original post again. They're NOT SUPPOSED to be balanced. They're storylines. That's it. probably best is they're limited in some way in MP however.
If they really were just storylines, then that might be the case. But in reality, the majority offer gameplay benefits, and some give more gameplay benefits than others.

That doesn't change just because a dev said it.

I was hoping there would be more.
I was reading their social media earlier, and they said something along the lines of needing to start somewhere, so I think we can expect more in future patches. 18 isn't bad, and there are some interesting options. I'm just mixed on what some can do.

And the saplings you seed throughout the galaxy give a terraform type once you get that ascension perk unlocked.

Don't know whether that works as a theory for how Tree of Life actually works, but that could be a very cool perk to give to hive worlds.

Why not a Alien Invasion survivor origin? Like what happened in Terra Invicta and other sci-fi stories?

I think this could be great if done well,

Basically starting with an undiscovered rival, and you are unable to conduct diplomacy with them, and get a boost if you conquer them.

It's definitely a great story generator

so if you don't have Federations, and you are playing as a normal, nonhivemind, non-Lithoid Empire and you don't own any DLC, your choices will be...

There Seriously needs to be more origins available for free! That's a pitiful selection, and leaves out so many possible backstories for species! What if My empire was unified through brutal warfare?? Shouldn't there at least be a "Planatary Conquest" origin?

I love this features and a lot of these origins but I'm disappointed there are literally only 3 options available for everyone, one of which is useless and another one of which is very niche.
I think this is kind of an unfair criticism.
At the moment 0-DLC-ers have the equivalent of 1 origin, now in a free update they'll have 3, and still you whine?

"Not enough content for my money" is one of the few problems that Stellaris doesn't have.
"Carelessly shovels barely-tested, negligently unbalanced, mechanically disjointed, I-did-it-for-the-memes tier additional content onto the top of creaking, crumbling foundations that can't support it", yes, but no-one can accuse them of insufficient quantity of content.

none of those origins really wow'ed me. Some of them seem like they might be neat, but information provided is scarce. I think the most glaring example is the galactic doorstop. If it's really just a bloody gate in your home system, talk about a letdown. Now if it were an actual unique start, a closed off system for instance that'd be neat. Or if it had some other unique interaction with the network...
