Stellaris Dev Diary #160 - Origins Full Reveal

Hello everyone!

In our previous dev diary #155 we talked about Origins, and today we will be returned to the topic by going through Origins again, but in more detail.

Please note that although this is a pretty exhaustive list, there is no guarantee that these Origins will necessarily match what will be in Federations once it is released.

What are Origins?
Origins allows you to pick a background story for your empire. An empire can only pick one Origin.

upload_2019-11-12_16-32-52.png

Prosperous Unification is the “default” Origin.

There are currently 18 Origins in the game, where some of them were converted from previously being Civics. Origins that were converted will be unlocked by the same DLC that they were unlocked by when they were civics.

Origins are not meant to be balanced against each other, but rather balanced within themselves (as in they don't start in severe resource deficits or "feel broken" by themselves). There are Origins that are "stronger" than other Origins.

The Origins
Prosperous Unification: Start with 4 additional Pops and 2 additional Districts. (Available to everyone)

Mechanist: Start with 8 Pops being robots, and the ability to build more. (Utopia)

Syncretic Evolution: Start the game with 12 Pops being of another species. (Utopia)

upload_2019-11-12_16-33-46.png

Life-Seeded: Start on a Gaia World. (Apocalypse)

Post-Apocalyptic: Start on a Tomb World. (Apocalypse)

Remnants: Start on a Relic World. (Ancient Relics)

Shattered Ring: Start on a Shattered Ring World. Your empire lives on the only intact section of the ancient megastructure, and it is possible to repair most of the other sections. (Federations)

upload_2019-11-15_10-26-2.png

Also starts with Habitat habitability preference.

Void Dwellers: Start on a Habitat above your destroyed, former homeworld, and with 2 more habitats in your home system. Completely adapted to living in habitats, and start with the technology to build new ones, but also suffers a penalty to living on regular planets. (Federations)

Scion: Start as the vassal of a Fallen Empire. (Federations)

upload_2019-11-12_16-34-49.png

Galactic Doorstep: Start with a dormant Gateway in your home system, which can be investigated and reactivated. (Available to everyone)

Tree of Life: Only for Hive Minds. Start with a powerful Tree of Life on your homeworld. Disastrous if you would somehow lose control of it. Colony ships also plant a sapling on new colonies. (Utopia)

upload_2019-11-12_16-35-5.png
upload_2019-11-12_16-35-10.png

On the Shoulder of Giants: Investigate a series of Archaeological Sites related to a mysterious benefactor. (Federations)

upload_2019-11-15_10-44-10.png

Meteorite colony ship.

Calamitous Birth: Lithoid Only. Start with a Massive Crater on your Homeworld. You are also able to build Meteorite Colony Ships, which colonize planets in a more dramatic fashion. (Lithoids)

Resource Consolidation: Machines only. Start with a Machine World as your homeworld. (Synthetic Dawn)

Zi0m58PMJx0I1FMIMHFA7EWL1vI2ClddP2CRVMaeGPLtWX6UHTE3hIhX9I9GdcbcE_M71tYq4QdZkb38UWb0y54gSHMcwFusdRBbO0KIKoMf7x2DZp2O0qEQE0cC-hWWXE_HMMAX

Comfy federalized start.

Common Ground: Start with as the leader of a Galactic Union federation, and with The Federation tradition unlocked. (Federations)

Hegemon: Start with as the leader of a Hegemony federation, and with The Federation tradition unlocked. (Federations)

upload_2019-11-12_16-36-15.png

Doomsday: Your homeworld is doomed and it will explode after 64 years, so you need to find a new home for your species. (Federations)

Lost Colony: Another empire with the same species as you will exist somewhere in the galaxy. (Available to everyone)

---

That is it for this week! Next week we will be back and we will be talking about some of the new things affecting diplomacy, such as Envoys.

I'm rather disapointed. I hoped there would be more standart origins that described how an empire came from several nations to unification. Things like "global conquest" or "religious unification", or "bloody world war that convinced people they should unite".

All those origin are too specifics, and I guess most of my presets empire will have "prosperous unification".

A missed opportunity in my view. A lot of people would have used it and I'd have bought the DLC for it alone. I'm going to buy the DLC anyway, but you get my point.
Probably because there's no way to implement a psionic origin without it giving the player the entire psionic ascension wholesale.

Mechanist is different, because the complete synthetic ascension still requires somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 technologies, all of which require linear tech progression down three different trees before converging at Synthetic Personality Matrix. In contrast, psionic ascension begins and ends at Psionic Theory, so anything that boosts the odds of drawing it completes the entire process in one step.

And, as it turns out, having pops with the latent psionic trait boosts your odds for drawing Psionic Theory. So, you know. Problems.

what happens to the population of your doomsday planet before it explodes? do they all die or are there events for a mass exodus perhaps?

forced relocation at a cost seems a bit pointless if they know they'll die if they stay

I like the idea, but it seems somewhat 'half baked'. I know you are not attempting to balance them against each other, but...maybe you should a little? I mean, I can have a single, inactive gateway that might have zero bearing on the game vs a Gaia/Relic/Ring world start?

If you did want to try to 'balance' origins without having to make them all feel the same, perhaps give the weaker origins give +points to your species traits or whatnot?

Maybe there should be a toggle option to turn origins on/off for competitive or just balanced play? I have the feeling that the AI will be unable to take advantage of some of these.

Even if you hand them the tech they're still better off going synth ascension anyway.

I am a little bit dissapointed that you can only pick one origin.
While not all of them make sense to be combined i see roughly three to four categories that would eventually make for an interesting combination.

E.g. Ringworld + Doomsday + Federation

categories I would suggest could be:

"Origin" (E.g. Lifeseeded, Syncretic Evolution), Unification (including beeing a hivemind or machine empire) - Diplomatic State ("normal", Vasall, Federation) etc.

Basically i would find it great to be able to combine things as long as they make some sense and are mechanical combinable.

(And Doomsday + Tree of Life would make a really interesting hardcore mode game imho!)

Coooool!
I'm looking forward to Stellaris again, I just hope I can find the time and that the launcher's added a scrollbar when I do. And I am relieved to see that the Origin system isn't locked behind Federations, although I'll probably get Federations eventually.

I feel like the lost colony concept could do with more variety and options, but that's what mods are for...

Do machine and hive empires only receive the default background and the origins that specifically reference them? Or can we also be a machine empire on a ruined ringworld or a hive empire that's part of a federation? I imagine some things (like mechanist) only make sense with standard empires, but I'm curious what the limits are for the gestalt empires.

Galactic Doorstep does seem underwhelming, but it would be perfect for my Society of the Holy Wound subversive cult based on the Knock principal from Cultist Simulator. The Knock is the principle that opens doors and unseams barriers.

Defending mechanist? The civic (now origin) that gives you the most powerful ascension path ridiculously fast along with 2 amazing early game techs FOR FREE? You not only get half the prerequisites for droids, you get double the weight to draw the card! Much of this path is just in the perks, the ascension is entirely optional.

And psionics isn't “complete” when you select transcendence, you have years of accessing the shroud to get it to its full potential. Even if you give a player the psionic theory tech for free, it wouldn’t compete with mechanist.

To those worried that all of these will show up equally for AI empires, that's almost certainly not going to happen. Civics currently have weights (with ones like Life-Seeded being very low), so I'm sure Origins will too.

Also, as for the Calamitous Birth origin, I'm pretty sure it won't do away with the colonization phase, and will instead add several clearable pop-blockers on the planets you colonize (probably called Meteorite Fragments or something), given that they previously (either in a DD or on Twitter) mentioned that there was going to be a specific origin that modified Lithoid Monoliths.

"Modified" is such a vague term. That could be anything from "clear this blocker to make a special 1-pop colony ship" to "this colony ship creates lithoid monoliths where it lands."

And I gotta say, colony ships that cost 1,000 minerals seems a little extreme. Unless we can toss those asteroids at other planets and wipe them out to steal them.
