Stellaris Dev Diary #155 - Origins

Hello everyone!

I have just returned from a belated vacation in Japan, and although I had a great time there it is also fun to be back to work. Today I want to talk about some of the cool things happening with Stellaris this year. As many of you have probably guessed, Stellaris will announce a new expansion at PDXCon this year. This expansion will feature a lot of cool new things, most of which will be revealed at PDXCon. But I do also have something really neat that I want to share with you now!

upload_2019-9-26_13-21-43.png

Good ol’ civics. Gotta love ‘em.

Back in Utopia we introduced a lot of cool new features to improve how you could customize and specialize your empire. Civics were a great addition to the game (in fact I consider them to be one of the best), but they are also awkwardly split between “backgrounds” like Syncretic Evolution and “institutions” like Distinguished Admiralty or Imperial Cult. Civics have added a lot of really cool options to how you can play the game, and that is something I want to expand upon – this is where the Origins come in.

upload_2019-9-26_13-21-24.png

Materialistic, mechanist, mushroom madness?
Origins is a new feature that is very similar to Civics, and will now represent your empire’s background. An empire can only select one Origin, and an Origin cannot be changed. We will be adding a bunch of new Origins (some of them are really cool!) and we will also be changing some Civics into being Origins instead. Examples of Civics that will be converted into Origins are Mechanists, Post-Apocalyptic, Life-Seeded and Syncretic Evolution.

upload_2019-9-26_13-22-7.png

Life-Seeded Origin, now open to hive minds.

Certain types of empires were previously unable to access some of these backgrounds since they have their own set of Civics (Gestalts and Megacorps for example). Because some of those Civics have been turned into Origins, those backgrounds will now be available to more types of empires. This means that it should now be possible to have a hive mind with the Life-Seeded origin or a Megacorp with the Mechanists origin. We know this is something people have been asking for for a long time now, and it’s really great to be able to add Origins to the game.

Like I mentioned earlier, we will also be adding a whole lot of new Origins that will add interesting starting positions for your empire. Right now we have 16 in the current version of the game, and we will probably see a few more until it's finished. I think Origins will be a great addition to the game that will surely help to facilitate a lot more player stories and player fantasies.

We won’t be showing all of these yet, but it will probably be immensely hard for us to not tease a few every now and then ;)

upload_2019-9-26_13-24-19.png

Who isn’t curious about Remnants and Scions?

PDXCon is rapidly approaching and Stellaris fans will have a lot of cool things to look forward to! In two weeks we will be back again with another dev diary, where we’ll talk a bit more about PDXCon.

I am assuming two possible Origins include "Lost Fallen Empire Colony" and "Awoken Ancient Empire colony." I forget which mod these were in but thought the idea was always sound. One of the origins was that the player's empire is a lost colony to a Fallen Empire that exists in the game. I believe the other option was that the player's empire is a colony of a long-dead and forgotten ancient empire whose citizens have begun waking up from some form of hibernation or cryo-sleep.

Would also be nice if origin related to the Greater Terran Union was an option. For those unfamiliar, Greater Terran Union was a playthrough done by YouTube channel Templin Institute under the story title Stellaris Invictus. Basically, Earth is invaded by a Fallen Empire and spends several decades fighting a guerrilla war. Once the aliens occupiers are driven off Earth, the surviving humans reverse engineer the alien technology to obtain FTL flight and begin building an interstellar empire, thus starting the Stellaris playthrough.

In both circumstances, you could tie some fun events to these origins to help spice up the game during each playthrough.

Calling it now -- some sort of "ecological collapse" is going to be included as an origin. At least two pre-made civs (the Voor Technocracy and Chinorr Combine) have, in their backstories, homeworlds that used to be entirely different biomes.

Only problem is that the descriptions are too specific, forcing the player into whatever pre written backstory you wrote. Like post apocalyptic says it was nuclear fire when there are many other scenarios that could cause an apocalypse, and it says they rebuild from the ashes, also forcing the player into that as well.

So a solution to this would be to make origins editable, or make them vague instead of detailed, with maybe an example of what they are.

The extensive role play options are the reason I have so much time in this game and continue replaying it, and it is the reason I buy every bit of DLC, so please at least make the origins text editable, which I believe would be the best solution.

Never noticed it, my bad, what did he say in this DD? And yes people are still posting about it, because it's an important matter to just... I dont know... being able to play the game?

I'm fine with new content, i bought all DLC, but with the current state of the game it seem's concerning that it's done to fix it, and let us enjoy this new content

Actualy it was Jamor in the last dd my bad. If you want to read what he said exactly go into the dd, select dev respons only, should be the last dd.

And i get that it is important, and if that is the reason you can not enjoy the next dlc etc.

They were enough threads about it. Enough posts. I normaly do not post in this forum. More of a lurker.
But it feels like every second post i read in every thread no matter the topic falls back to "but what about the late game fix, atleast give us a statment" etc.

SO pls, even if its in the dd, agree with the comment that talks about it and do not bring it up every second post you people make (generalising i know), but the people should know if the are meant by this.

What the other new origins you think we will get?
I for one hope we get a Nomadic Empire finally. That is something people have been talking about since Stellaris came out and the origin system looks a nice place to add it. Tell me that having a huge spaceship for homeworld isn't a great and awesome thing :)
We already have Tomb World and Gaia World start, how about a few more? Hive World start for Hive Minds, Machine World for Machine Intelligence. For regular empire, maybe we can start on a Relic World, or even Habitat or Ring World.

I would also like to see a Lost Colony origin for empires like the Commonwealth of Man (as I have mentioned earlier in this discussion).

Also, there should be a Machine Cult origin for Spiritualist empires, similar to Mechanist. Praise the Omnissiah!

What's the relevance of this DLC or any other if the late game lag makes the game unplayable in its current state? Who i s going to spend money into a product that doesnt work? I know I wont.

So does this mean that we can finally play a race of Fanatical Purifiers who are too lazy to do any purifying themselves and instead have robots to do it?

Those are from Guilli's Planetary Modifiers.

Mechanist requires Materialist, and if you take that you don't have enough ethics points to be Purifier.

Of course, nothing's stopping a Purifier from using robots anyway.

I'm really digging the UI and artwork for the origins. Can't wait to see this feature expanded upon in future updates! I know it's not final, and things are subject to change, but one suggestion I have to improve the UI a bit would be to alphabetize the selections so they are a little easier to navigate through and find the one you are looking for. It might not be necessary if the number of origins is small, but as more are added via mods, and in future updates, the list could become quite long.

Very interesting indeed. This looks like it will open up the door for some very interesting starts. When/if Habitats are ever expanded upon, an origin that lets you start on a Habitat rather than a planet (perhaps a Habitat hovering over an uninhabitable planet like Frozen, Molten, or Toxic; their homeworld having been ruined in the past, forcing them to build said Habitat to survive). Starting in a federation (when federations aren't a joke anyway) would also be an interesting origin.

I would like to think that Hive Mind civics will receive the same attention that other civics have received by the release of this expansion. It would be very dissatisfying if it that were not the case.

Fanatic Purifier with Tomb world start is my favorite way of playing purifier. My lore reason is that my spiritualists survived nuclear fire and only interact with other species who are worthy. So far no other species has survived after the Armageddon bombardment to interact with.

Neet. My FP/PA lore is that my species repelled an alien invasion while they were in the "Early Space" era, but the cost was dire. Detonating thousands of nuclear warheads across the planet within the span of a single day did put an end to the invasion, but had some...other consequences. After having been nearly wiped out, the primitive species swore revenge on the uncaring galaxy that nearly destroyed them. Thus were born the "Khellzan Revengers."

I really REALLY hope that Fanatic Purifier/Post-Apocalyptic will still be a valid configuration or I'll have no choice but to cheat that back in.

Will the Genocidal civics (and while we're on the topic, also the "criminal" ones in Criminal Heritage and Barbaric Despoiler) be converted into Origins as well, or will they be a separate thing?

I mostly ask because an extremely common combo is to take both Post-Apocalyptic and Fanatic Purifiers, which lets one "aggressively terraform" enemy planets into good climates for the purifiers, and also makes a very good role-play story as well. You also didn't mention them on the list, and they fall under the category of "Can't be removed or added post-game start."
