Roads & Vehicles Dev Diary: Free Content & Patch Notes

Keksi_Logo_plate_large.png

Greetings mayors! I’m delighted to present our free content update, Roads & Vehicles, coming on the 15th of November! As the name suggests, it includes new roads and vehicles, not just for the base game, but for several DLCs as well - including cross-DLC roads! Yes, we have pedestrian streets with trams for you, and much more!

Previously, we haven’t included content that uses features from more than one expansion. This has meant not including some options, like pedestrian streets with trams, but it has also meant that no matter what DLCs you might have, you would have access to all content when purchasing a new expansion.

But we see the cool ideas and suggestions you have, and we have wanted a way to add cross-DLC content. The Roads & Vehicles update is our first step to include some of these ideas and focuses on the base game, After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades content.

New Vehicles
Let’s dive into the new content starting with vehicles! The update adds 20 new vehicles to the game: 8 new buses for everyone who owns the base game, and 12 new trams for Snowfall owners, all in different styles and with different capacities. If you’ve played our previous games, Cities In Motion in particular, you may find these new vehicles familiar. They certainly bring out some fond memories for us, and we’re excited to see them in all your cities!

1-1 Buses.png

The new buses include both double-deckers and articulated buses

I love using the new bus and tram options in my city! Instead of increasing the budget for busy lines, I switch to higher capacity options to transport all my passengers, resulting in fewer vehicles on the roads. My bus lines can transport up to 80 passengers per vehicle, while tram lines can reach 140 passengers! But size isn’t everything, I adore the tiny tram that holds just 65 passengers, and the older bus styles just look so perfect for the lines reaching villages or industrial areas of my city.

1-2 Trams.png

The new fleet of trams offers much more variety for your transport lines

New Roads
In the roads category we have 25 new additions tied to After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades expanding the options for roads with bicycle lanes, trams, and pedestrian streets. To give you an overview of which roads are available with each expansion, we’ll go through them in groups, starting with After Dark.

After Dark added cyclists and roads with bicycle lanes offering pedestrians a faster way to travel without needing a car or public transport. The 7 new bicycle roads expand the existing options and are available to anyone who owns After Dark. I’m particularly fond of using the Four-Lane Road with Decorative Trees and Bicycle Lanes and have been replacing a lot of my existing four-lane roads with it - and if you need more lanes there’s a six-lane version of it as well!

1-3 AD.png

Give the cyclists of your city room to roam the roads

If you own Snowfall you will have 8 new tram roads to choose from when building your cities, featuring both dedicated and shared lanes! I’m a big fan of the Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks and Trees for the extra greenery in the city and of course the Six-Lane Road with Median and Tram Tracks for those extra busy parts of the city! The new small roads with tram tracks are very handy too though, offering a Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks for the narrow but busy areas and a Two-Lane Road with Tram Tracks with the middle lanes being tram-only.

1-4 SN.png

Take trams to the next level with the new roads and vehicles

For anyone who owns both After Dark and Snowfall we have 4 new roads mixing bicycle lanes, trams, and bus-priority lanes - perfect for creating cyclist-friendly cities with busy public transport. The Six-Lane Road with Tram Tracks, Bus and Bicycle Lanes has to be my favorite as it’s just perfect for busy main roads throughout my city. The shared lanes for tram and bus allow my public transport priority lanes while still leaving 4 lanes for regular car and truck traffic, and the bicycle lanes integrate so well with the rest of my city.

1-5 AD-SN.png

Prioritize space for your public transport and cyclists with the new roads combining trams and bicycle lanes

Last, but certainly not least, we have pedestrian streets with tram tracks, which are available when owning both Snowfall and Plazas & Promenades. As you may have guessed they come in both small and large versions and all three different styles for a total of 6 new pedestrian streets. Like regular pedestrian streets, you will need a pedestrian area and service to handle garbage and goods for buildings placed on these streets, and emergency vehicles and buses can use the tram lanes, allowing you to combine pedestrian streets with bus lanes and tram tracks seamlessly.

1-6 PP-SN.png

Bring tram lines into the heart of your pedestrian areas

That brings us to the end of the line and the dev diary. Roads & Vehicles include many bug fixes besides the free content, which can be found in the patch notes below. We’re grateful for all the reports, and should you come across any new issues please continue to report them on our Bug & Support forum. We’ll have additional fixes with the Financial Districts expansion and future patches to come.

Thanks for the detailed rundown. Eagerly anticipating this update along with the upcoming content packs, particularly Heart of Korea. I know we are well into the "nice-to-have" side of DLCs now for Cities Skylines, but if they keep on coming like this, that's fine by me. Each one adds some new twist that gives me enough of a reason to start a new city and approach it differently somehow than before.

Looking forward to more info on the financial specialization mini-expansion next month.

Finally the start of cross-DLC content. Does this mean we'll be having DLCs and expansions in the near-future that will include new additional content for a previous DLC?

Wow. That is a lot of buses and trams. Looking forward to using them. Also very happy to see the huge variety of capacity.

Hope this is the start of more updates adding more content to existing DLCs and more cross-DLC content.

But we see the cool ideas and suggestions you have, and we have wanted a way to add cross-DLC content. The Roads & Vehicles update is our first step to include some of these ideas and focuses on the base game, After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades content.

This makes me very happy to hear.

Ikarus 280 is certainly a very welcome addition. There was a trolleybus version as well, just saying ;)

Cross-DLC content however should have been a thing a long time ago because DLCs often felt disjointed (they added one feature like tram or trolleybus and that's it, it was impossible to combine for example trolleybuses with bicycle lanes).

Few questions:
- Will there be an option to change vehicles in DLC buildings? For example I'd like to use new buses with Green Cities biofuel depots or garbage trucks in Recycling Centers, changing taxicabs in After Dark's Taxi Depot also would be nice.
- Could you remake the vanilla police car? I have no problems with most vanilla cars but that one has atrocious proportions (the rear wheels are located way too forward, you can see it clearly at the last screenshot)
- Any chance of adding some new (non-ruined) buildings for Map Editor?
- Will ordinary conifers finally be on temperate maps? This isn't that much of an issue since more trees were added during last update (and two of them are coniferous) but it is still a problem with forestry industry - even if conifers are selected only leafy trees spawn, I think I reported this like 2 years ago, still unpatched
- Maybe you could still switch BRT highways as part of Mass Transit DLC while making Two-Way Highways & Two-Lane (One-Way) Highways part of vanilla? Lack of the former is especially bothering as all maps need to have outside connection that is huge highway and no rural roads at all outside map borders (unless they're workshop maps locked behind Mass Transit DLC), while the latter are pretty much necessary to construct highway interchange with "lane mathematics" (that's what I also meant about disjointed DLCs - BRTs would feel more apropriate in Mass Transit, while more ordinary highways should be in vanilla).
- I also think that road that has width of a Two-Lane Gravel Road but is asphalted would be a good addition
- Maybe some DLC/update that focuses on city management (like deals with other cites, buying/selling trash/energy or crime making more impact rather than being just another rehashed service like garbage collection)? I feel like this game aspect is severly neglected as sandbox crowd gets all the attention. I think that maybe sequel should have two separate game modes that are picked before creating a city - sandbox with unlimited money and everything unlocked and simulation that is more focused on city management and has achievements).
- Also any chance that older CCPs like Art Deco will be remastered? While some of the buildings are still okay (like The Majesty) others are clearly not up to the current CCP standards

Oh God, not again......

Why isn't the airport cargo station fixed?!

I reported this problem back in February and reminded the devs again for the 1.15.0 patch. Trains still can't enter the roadside platform! I also emailed CO directly and they confirmed they reproduced the bug........ so why isn't it fixed? All the recent bugs reported for P&P are patched, but a critical one from Airports remains. The airport cargo station will be left in a perpetually unusable state at this rate.

Nice LUT and wonderful resolution. Can the base-game produce this quality?
The screenshots use the default Temperate LUT and are high-resolution screenshots taken with shift+F12. The only editing that's been done to them is adding a slight vignette effect. So yes, it can :) Though buses and trams lined up is a render, it just wasn't possible to get them lined up nicely in-game like that

Lots of great questions and ideas! I'll answer the ones I can. :)
  • Biofuel buses are a different bus type which are set on the bus line. We haven't included any new biofuel buses in this update, but custom ones can be set already. Recycling centers already use the vehicle selector, but the button only shows up when there is more than one option, which for recycling centers requires custom content at the moment. Taxi depots and other services supporting the vehicle selector is on our internal wishlist, so we'll have to see for future updates!
  • We're unlikely to remake the police car, we much prefer to add new options. No immediate plans to add new service vehicle options, but we're always happy to hear suggestions you might have!
  • Are there any specific non-ruined and decorative buildings you hope to see in the editor?
  • Content Creator Packs are very unlikely to be updated (bug fixes notwithstanding) as the creators have fulfilled their contract

Very cool! Will buses actually use the bus lane now though? That's the only reason I stopped using them
Yes, they will prefer them in more situations than before, so you should see much higher usage of them.

Is there any fix for the creator achievement yet?

Not in this update, but we are still investigating the issue. I don't have an ETA on a fix at this time, but we haven't forgotten the issue. :)

Same situation with the Airport Cargo Station. No update at this time, but it's on our radar.

Also, (sorry for writing two comments, I was just reminded of this after I had posted I am interested on the ’Africa In Miniature‘ CCP planned to release next year, will this CCP release just be a standalone? And when can we expect a bit more information about it.

When it says for the Skyscrapers CCP there will be 47 new props, will these props be placeable for vanilla/console, or are they only ploppable through some other mean?
The props are not available in-game no, they are mostly air ducts that do not make sense to place on their own and props cannot be placed on top of buildings. For PC players they are available in the asset editor and can be used in custom buildings, but they will of course require the Content Creator Pack to work.
