Roads & Vehicles Dev Diary: Free Content & Patch Notes

Keksi_Logo_plate_large.png

Greetings mayors! I’m delighted to present our free content update, Roads & Vehicles, coming on the 15th of November! As the name suggests, it includes new roads and vehicles, not just for the base game, but for several DLCs as well - including cross-DLC roads! Yes, we have pedestrian streets with trams for you, and much more!

Previously, we haven’t included content that uses features from more than one expansion. This has meant not including some options, like pedestrian streets with trams, but it has also meant that no matter what DLCs you might have, you would have access to all content when purchasing a new expansion.

But we see the cool ideas and suggestions you have, and we have wanted a way to add cross-DLC content. The Roads & Vehicles update is our first step to include some of these ideas and focuses on the base game, After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades content.

New Vehicles
Let’s dive into the new content starting with vehicles! The update adds 20 new vehicles to the game: 8 new buses for everyone who owns the base game, and 12 new trams for Snowfall owners, all in different styles and with different capacities. If you’ve played our previous games, Cities In Motion in particular, you may find these new vehicles familiar. They certainly bring out some fond memories for us, and we’re excited to see them in all your cities!

1-1 Buses.png

The new buses include both double-deckers and articulated buses

I love using the new bus and tram options in my city! Instead of increasing the budget for busy lines, I switch to higher capacity options to transport all my passengers, resulting in fewer vehicles on the roads. My bus lines can transport up to 80 passengers per vehicle, while tram lines can reach 140 passengers! But size isn’t everything, I adore the tiny tram that holds just 65 passengers, and the older bus styles just look so perfect for the lines reaching villages or industrial areas of my city.

1-2 Trams.png

The new fleet of trams offers much more variety for your transport lines

New Roads
In the roads category we have 25 new additions tied to After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades expanding the options for roads with bicycle lanes, trams, and pedestrian streets. To give you an overview of which roads are available with each expansion, we’ll go through them in groups, starting with After Dark.

After Dark added cyclists and roads with bicycle lanes offering pedestrians a faster way to travel without needing a car or public transport. The 7 new bicycle roads expand the existing options and are available to anyone who owns After Dark. I’m particularly fond of using the Four-Lane Road with Decorative Trees and Bicycle Lanes and have been replacing a lot of my existing four-lane roads with it - and if you need more lanes there’s a six-lane version of it as well!

1-3 AD.png

Give the cyclists of your city room to roam the roads

If you own Snowfall you will have 8 new tram roads to choose from when building your cities, featuring both dedicated and shared lanes! I’m a big fan of the Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks and Trees for the extra greenery in the city and of course the Six-Lane Road with Median and Tram Tracks for those extra busy parts of the city! The new small roads with tram tracks are very handy too though, offering a Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks for the narrow but busy areas and a Two-Lane Road with Tram Tracks with the middle lanes being tram-only.

1-4 SN.png

Take trams to the next level with the new roads and vehicles

For anyone who owns both After Dark and Snowfall we have 4 new roads mixing bicycle lanes, trams, and bus-priority lanes - perfect for creating cyclist-friendly cities with busy public transport. The Six-Lane Road with Tram Tracks, Bus and Bicycle Lanes has to be my favorite as it’s just perfect for busy main roads throughout my city. The shared lanes for tram and bus allow my public transport priority lanes while still leaving 4 lanes for regular car and truck traffic, and the bicycle lanes integrate so well with the rest of my city.

1-5 AD-SN.png

Prioritize space for your public transport and cyclists with the new roads combining trams and bicycle lanes

Last, but certainly not least, we have pedestrian streets with tram tracks, which are available when owning both Snowfall and Plazas & Promenades. As you may have guessed they come in both small and large versions and all three different styles for a total of 6 new pedestrian streets. Like regular pedestrian streets, you will need a pedestrian area and service to handle garbage and goods for buildings placed on these streets, and emergency vehicles and buses can use the tram lanes, allowing you to combine pedestrian streets with bus lanes and tram tracks seamlessly.

1-6 PP-SN.png

Bring tram lines into the heart of your pedestrian areas

That brings us to the end of the line and the dev diary. Roads & Vehicles include many bug fixes besides the free content, which can be found in the patch notes below. We’re grateful for all the reports, and should you come across any new issues please continue to report them on our Bug & Support forum. We’ll have additional fixes with the Financial Districts expansion and future patches to come.

If you are on Steam it will automatically be downloaded.

Anything specific you are hoping for?
Hi, third wheel here, if possible:

1. Can you add a way to create crosswalks?
folks on PC can add them using mods like Node Controller, but on Consoles we have to use two different types of roads to create them, they're often misaligned, dysfunctional and unpleasant to look at.

2. A single-unit narrow pedestrian road, to create alleyways & whatnot.

3. Maybe compact Bus & Tram stations to simulate BRT stops & tram stops that shelters passengers from extreme weather conditions. It'd be similar the "Monorail Station With Road" from the Mass Transit DLC.

There is no Download page, it's added automatically.

No link is needed, the update is applied automatically. Depending on your update settings it installs when you open Steam/Epic or when you start the game next time. No extra steps are needed, and no download to manually apply. :)

I can't seem to find a bug report on this issue, but of course the forum search option doesn't want to behave atm. Could you elaborate on the issue, what's affected and what you're attempting to do. A link to the affected roads would also be helpful to look into this. :)
Hi Avanya !

Sry for the late reply ... I couldnt test all the thinks until sunday and then I forgot to reply. Well ... today I had the time do dive deeper in to this again.
I was under the impression (due to some talks after the PP update) that this must have been a vanilla issue.... I did some additional tests today and
I dont think (anymore) that it is a vanilla issue ... so, false alarm. Sry for that !

cheers

No worries! I hope you find a solution to it :)

Well, for plaza and promenades, why couldn't you do something like add it with a free update when making a paid dlc. You could do something like:

For all the Cities Skylines owner they can get the dlc free while the people who want to buy it need to buy a bundle. That would be better wouldn't it?

I'm not quite sure I understand, could you elaborate on what you mean? We already include a free update for everyone when we release an expansion, so there's a little something for everyone.

Not the pedestrian surfaces, they have been repaired. But, for example, the new 6-lane roads, or indeed almost all new road types. Textures of median lines and medians! It should be improved.

The new road textures on console - still - (XboxONEX) are still horrible. The dividing lines, the medians...it would be nice to improve them with an update!
Please make sure to report this on the console forum. We at Colossal Order only handle the PC version of the game and I'm not sure if anyone from the console team check the comments of this post.

i would love to have new sounds in the game. new sirens replace that awful noise in industry sounds like metal being hit with enormous pressure and offices without that constant beeping

Biofuel buses are a different bus type which are set on the bus line. We haven't included any new biofuel buses in this update, but custom ones can be set already. Recycling centers already use the vehicle selector, but the button only shows up when there is more than one option, which for recycling centers requires custom content at the moment. Taxi depots and other services supporting the vehicle selector is on our internal wishlist, so we'll have to see for future updates!
Still, I think the buses should be interchangable between these depots (if it is technically possible). I prefer the biofuel bus depot as it is more compact and uses less resources but I'd like to use the new buses as well. If not, I'll probably return to the regular bus deport as these vehicles are just too good to not use them :)

We're unlikely to remake the police car, we much prefer to add new options.
I don't mean replacing the car, I wouldn't have the problems with the car design itself if it weren't for the rear wheels that are located way too forward that. I'd consider that "fixing", not remaking :)

Are there any specific non-ruined and decorative buildings you hope to see in the editor?
4-5 residential houses and maybe a barn as map editor ploppables would be enough IMO, it always somewhat bothered me that cities in Cities Sklines are too isolated on the maps - I've modified a few maps to include some villages outside the 25-tile area (even made some "grain elevators" from bridge pillars :V) but the main problem is repetition as there is only one ruined house prop so there's no option to build believable villages or city outskirts with vanilla assets. Also just thought that maybe smaller electric/telephone lines (beside the current larger ones, they don't have to work, could be only as a prop) would be nice as well.
Another problem is lack of smaller roads in map editor - I've used Highway Ramp, but these are one way, so that's an option far from perfect - maybe when Mass Transit will get some new content like new roads for monorails, could the two-lane highway be made a part of a base game (at least the version without sound barriers)? Because while personally I have a Mass Transit DLC, I'd like to make some maps that don't require any DLCs and not being able to use these highways in the base game IMO restricts mapmaking creativity.

Content Creator Packs are very unlikely to be updated (bug fixes notwithstanding) as the creators have fulfilled their contract
Aww, too bad. Anyway, thank you for replying.

Hi, was the bug related to park visitors reseting to 0 after load been fixed? I couldn't find any mention to it in the release notes.

thks.
No update on this issue yet, sorry! We're still investigating it.

The expansion roads & vehicles does not appear in the steam store, either among the expansions that i have in the game alredy included it is as if it had not been published
