Roads & Vehicles Dev Diary: Free Content & Patch Notes

Greetings mayors! I’m delighted to present our free content update, Roads & Vehicles, coming on the 15th of November! As the name suggests, it includes new roads and vehicles, not just for the base game, but for several DLCs as well - including cross-DLC roads! Yes, we have pedestrian streets with trams for you, and much more!

Previously, we haven’t included content that uses features from more than one expansion. This has meant not including some options, like pedestrian streets with trams, but it has also meant that no matter what DLCs you might have, you would have access to all content when purchasing a new expansion.

But we see the cool ideas and suggestions you have, and we have wanted a way to add cross-DLC content. The Roads & Vehicles update is our first step to include some of these ideas and focuses on the base game, After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades content.

New Vehicles
Let’s dive into the new content starting with vehicles! The update adds 20 new vehicles to the game: 8 new buses for everyone who owns the base game, and 12 new trams for Snowfall owners, all in different styles and with different capacities. If you’ve played our previous games, Cities In Motion in particular, you may find these new vehicles familiar. They certainly bring out some fond memories for us, and we’re excited to see them in all your cities!

The new buses include both double-deckers and articulated buses

I love using the new bus and tram options in my city! Instead of increasing the budget for busy lines, I switch to higher capacity options to transport all my passengers, resulting in fewer vehicles on the roads. My bus lines can transport up to 80 passengers per vehicle, while tram lines can reach 140 passengers! But size isn’t everything, I adore the tiny tram that holds just 65 passengers, and the older bus styles just look so perfect for the lines reaching villages or industrial areas of my city.

New Roads
In the roads category we have 25 new additions tied to After Dark, Snowfall, and Plazas & Promenades expanding the options for roads with bicycle lanes, trams, and pedestrian streets. To give you an overview of which roads are available with each expansion, we’ll go through them in groups, starting with After Dark.

After Dark added cyclists and roads with bicycle lanes offering pedestrians a faster way to travel without needing a car or public transport. The 7 new bicycle roads expand the existing options and are available to anyone who owns After Dark. I’m particularly fond of using the Four-Lane Road with Decorative Trees and Bicycle Lanes and have been replacing a lot of my existing four-lane roads with it - and if you need more lanes there’s a six-lane version of it as well!

Give the cyclists of your city room to roam the roads

If you own Snowfall you will have 8 new tram roads to choose from when building your cities, featuring both dedicated and shared lanes! I’m a big fan of the Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks and Trees for the extra greenery in the city and of course the Six-Lane Road with Median and Tram Tracks for those extra busy parts of the city! The new small roads with tram tracks are very handy too though, offering a Four-Lane Road with Tram Tracks for the narrow but busy areas and a Two-Lane Road with Tram Tracks with the middle lanes being tram-only.

Take trams to the next level with the new roads and vehicles

For anyone who owns both After Dark and Snowfall we have 4 new roads mixing bicycle lanes, trams, and bus-priority lanes - perfect for creating cyclist-friendly cities with busy public transport. The Six-Lane Road with Tram Tracks, Bus and Bicycle Lanes has to be my favorite as it’s just perfect for busy main roads throughout my city. The shared lanes for tram and bus allow my public transport priority lanes while still leaving 4 lanes for regular car and truck traffic, and the bicycle lanes integrate so well with the rest of my city.

Last, but certainly not least, we have pedestrian streets with tram tracks, which are available when owning both Snowfall and Plazas & Promenades. As you may have guessed they come in both small and large versions and all three different styles for a total of 6 new pedestrian streets. Like regular pedestrian streets, you will need a pedestrian area and service to handle garbage and goods for buildings placed on these streets, and emergency vehicles and buses can use the tram lanes, allowing you to combine pedestrian streets with bus lanes and tram tracks seamlessly.

That brings us to the end of the line and the dev diary. Roads & Vehicles include many bug fixes besides the free content, which can be found in the patch notes below. We’re grateful for all the reports, and should you come across any new issues please continue to report them on our Bug & Support forum.   • Large Six-Lane Road with Median and Tram Tracks has lower speed than other Large roads
  • Buses do not always use bus-only lanes on highways
  • Visible gaps in steep terrain at the connection of roads and bridges (visual only)
  • Trams Capacity 132 and Capacity 72 get "squashed" at stops
  • The new buses are invisible in left-hand traffic cities

Currently, only vanilla tram and trolleybus direct connect nodes work.. all other "dc node groups" don't.
For exqmple, this issue leads to missing wire connections for the trolleybus roads, which I released two years ago.
These roads use a vanilla "dc group".
Custom dc groups, provided by the Adaptive Networks mod, aren't working too atm.

Loving the additions with Cross DLC
I would love to see some more options in a later update for roads that I feel would be of great use

More assumetrical options (using trams, bus lanes cycle lanes etc) and with more lane combos, 2+3 3+4 etc

1 Lane Road, single 1 Lane 1 way with and without parking bays to 1 side, can be used to make the tight little alleyway type roads often seen in densely packed cities and can also be used to create turning lanes if feeling creative enough.

The ability to change built in roads for cargo ports, vanilla airports, the metro/train on 4 Lane road hub etc. This will allow us to better integrate them into existing networks, the metro/train hub just screams for a tram or trolleybus road running through it! And changing the built in roads to cargo ports to 1 way would fix nearly every traffic issue we players have with them.

More hub options, bus station with built in tram stop, metro with a monorail platform etc again to allow for more integration into current layouts.

PARKING LOTS and PARKING GARAGES!!!
quite possible THE most requesting item on forums, twitter, Facebook etc. We don't care about mechanics, treat them as parks and purely cosmetic and we will all be happy

I can't seem to find a bug report on this issue, but of course the forum search option doesn't want to behave atm. Could you elaborate on the issue, what's affected and what you're attempting to do. A link to the affected roads would also be helpful to look into this. :)

Yes, they will prefer them in more situations than before, so you should see much higher usage of them.
Excellent! I avoided using buses for a long time because they tended to black the roads way too much. But if they'll use the buslane then I'll just buslane all the busy roads with buses on them so they are less annoying and useful again!

Will service vehicles use them more too? I hate seeing my police and ambulances stuck in traffic!

Oh God, not again......

Why isn't the airport cargo station fixed?!

I reported this problem back in February and reminded the devs again for the 1.15.0 patch. Trains still can't enter the roadside platform! I also emailed CO directly and they confirmed they reproduced the bug........ so why isn't it fixed? All the recent bugs reported for P&P are patched, but a critical one from Airports remains. The airport cargo station will be left in a perpetually unusable state at this rate. :mad:

Yes, service vehicles will use bus lanes when responding to an emergency.

I definitely recognise at least a few of those tram models from real life! Are all the new vehicles based on real-life ones? Can you tell us the inspirations?
We use a lot of different real-life references for all our assets, but I'm afraid I don't have a list of which ones we looked at when making the tram models.

In the free patch, I'd like to see BRT stops and light rail stops so that we can build bus rapid transit and light rail networks SEPERATE to regular bus and tram networks. All it would require is dedicated stops. And guided busways which can have their own stops and/or have BRT stops attached. Also, I'd like to see non-airport double decker buses which are route coloured

Trolleybuses and biofuel buses also need some love (e.g. trolleybus roads with dedicated lanes and articulated/bi-articulated trolleybuses/biofuel buses). There should also be more highway roads with bus lanes (e.g. a 4-lane and maybe even 5-lane highway where 1 of those lanes is a bus lane). Intercity buses should also be able to be used for local transit, as many real-world cities, especially American cities, use those for commuter buses.
When it comes to bikes, I think there should also be a few roads with 2-way protected cycle tracks for the sake of realism.
I also wonder if there will be large asymmetric roads (e.g. a 3+2 or a 2+1 w/ bike lanes)

All the content previewed in this dev diary is added to the game. Some of it to the base game, some of it to existing DLCs. What you get depends on the DLCs you own.
  • If you have just the base game you get 8 new buses - everyone who owns the game get these
  • If you have After Dark you get 7 new roads
  • If you have Snowfall you get 12 new trams and 8 new tram roads
  • If you have both After Dark and Snowfall you get all of the above plus 4 additional roads that use both those DLCs
  • And if you have both Snowfall and Plazas & Promenades you get 6 new roads
For all of it you just need to let the game update on the 15th and it will be added to the game and DLCs. :)

I'm gonna make such a beautiful bus based city!

Busses only is very north american :p Not the most efficient but I never felt I could do that before. I love the variety of buses!

I've been seeing a lot more weird designs internationally recently so it's really exciting to have a bunch of choices!

If you guys get interested in adding even more buses in the future I have a few recommendations:

I've had the chance to see a lot of international transport and the weird ones are really fun! I think players would love to see those in game! :)
Very much love this DLC it really is something that I was looking for in CS for a while.

Now if we can have some special vehicles that can go between pedestrian and normal roads like golf carts that would be another exciting one for me. :)
