HoI4 DevDiary: No Step Back Achievements

Hello, and welcome back to another Dev Diary for Hearts of Iron 4. As we close in on wrapping up this major operation, code-named Barbarossa, before winter falls (the first snow fell in Stockholm this weekend, I am sure it’ll be fine), today we will talk about the new achievements that will be added with the release of No Step Back.

As far as the process is concerned, we usually have an open list of achievement suggestions during the whole DLC development cycle. Near the end of the cycle, we take a vote on what achievements we want to see in the game (after eliminating any that would be technically impossible) and start the process of implementing them and ordering art.

For No Step Back, we started with a list of 49 suggestions, and whittled it down to 20 Achievements:

At least they run on time!: As fascist Italy, have max level railways in all your core states

Already in game, "neither death nor dishonor" iirc
I got the disagreement of the community, but just for the record.

Neither Death nor Dishonor can be easily done by going fascist/communist and allying Germany/USSR.

My suggestion, "They Shall Not Pass", implies saying democratic/non-aligned & not joining any Germany/USSR faction.

This makes is insanely more difficult as its almost a certainity that both USSR and Nazi Germany will attack you.

I don't see the problem.

It's not much fun in Stalingrad, so you don't build railways in Stalingrad.
This is totally what Mussolini should have done. "Attack the Allies? Nah, I'll improve my national railway network instead".

Maybe it's a bit odd, but while there are a number of achievements that I like the idea of, Around Eurasia in 80 days: Have a railroad from Gibraltar to Singapore is the one I'm most looking forward to.

hardest acheivements in my opinion :

This is going to be LIT: As Lithuania, hold the capitals of all of your neighbours : you would have to take on the soviets im guessing

No more Partitions: As Poland, be independent and ensure that both Germany and the USSR are either in your faction or don’t exist, you would have to beat germany and soviets

Around Eurasia in 80 days: Have a railroad from Gibraltar to Singapore , this is more of a time problem

I dont think any of those are hard.

First, you go communist and have soviets do the heavy lifting, then backstab then. You only need a capital in the peace deal.

Second, this is incredibly easy, you just join either soviets or germany and beat the other, achievment done.

Third you grab while doing a wq for one of the soviet achievements, or great britain.

No more Partitions clearly states that Poland has to be independent, so I doubt that you'll be allowed to join any factions outside perhaps creating your own.

Cheers for the DD Archangel, and the quality punning by all of the team :) Lots of interesting achievements there, and a few that'll take a bit of work. Looking forward to giving one or two a shake.

I guess my only complaint (not serious) would be a lack of naval-themed achievements :p However, this one probably counts - Polish operations in the Med would surely need a naval component.

Crusader Kings III: As Poland, crown a Monarch and capture Jerusalem

It also segues into this (colourised after the fact) pic, of Polish sailors aboard the destroyer ORP Piorun during Operation Halberd in Sep 1941 :) Let's pretend they're on their way to Jerusalem.

Any chance we could see some veterancy being put towards garrison divisions? Like the ability to lock in occupying divisions in countries and have them gain experience and lower casualities/increase compliance? If not soon, is it conceivable that Paradox would do something like that in the future?

Hello, could you add an achievement, like the victory of communism, so that the whole world was under the ideology of communism.
And the achievement itself can be called like: "World revolution" "Victory of the Comintern" "The cost of everything" or whatever else

Maybe something a little less stringent, like "all major powers are communist"?

well, something related to that. All the same, the USSR wanted to make a world revolution. This was his main goal. Let's say an achievement "New World Order" where all countries should be fascist, or where Great Britain should win everyone in the "One Empire" achievement, but where all countries should be communist no

For those worried about requiring peace conferences to get achievements, there is a way around that. If you create a collaboration government they gain ownership of the cores which were under your control. They will be your puppet, so that should be enough, but if you need to own the land yourself, just annex them to gain ownership.

Thanks for the reminder. I usually forget about this option, since it's not often I have enough compliance to create a collaboration government in the first place. But when you have the compliance to do so, this is a great option for achievement runs.

Just curious, does increased compliance from collaboration government spy missions apply to releasable shared cores inside a parent nation?

For example, if I ran multiple collaboration government missions on France, and got them up to 80+% compliance, would I later be able to release Occitania mid-war as a Collaboration Government puppet if I control the Occitania cores?

Trotsky did. Lenin did. Some communists did dream of a world revolution.

But Stalin, and USSR as a whole in HOI's timeframe, most certainly did not. He was a hardline isolationist.

Also, no, no more world conquest achievments. Hard pass.

That is, you want to say that the USSR did not have a goal to become world-wide? Yes, at that time they had no time to do this, although at the first opportunity to help a communist, they immediately helped (communist spain)

If Stalin did not want to make a revolution, why then did he not help Poland? Yes, the Molotov-Rebentrop Pact And even the fact that the USSR received a part of Poland is bullshit., which agreed to an alliance. But both Hitler and Stalin knew that there would be war! Why didn't he help the allies then ????, He could calmly help and finish World War 2 very quickly, well, relatively quickly, since the country was under 2 fronts, and it is so unreal to fight

The USSR wanted to become liberators. The USSR wanted to show that he is a communist man, that is how good we are, let's join us. And because of this maneuver, people began to believe in the communists more.

Are you serious about achievement ???
That is, when there are 3 main ideologies in the game (not counting authoritarianism), and these are communism, democracy, fascism. Of which there is fascism (New World Order), there is democracy (One Empire) in the face of Great Britain, but there is no communism!

Yes, and I think it's not so difficult to make an achievement about world communism. Yes, it is very dreary and long, I do not argue, but at least some "justice" will be about ideologies.
(took in quotation marks because I did not consider authoritarianism)

I finally was able to knock out the "Miklos Horthy and the Habsburg Prince" achievement today, and I noticed that some of the NSB achievements are already showing non-zero completion rates.

When the new achievements first appeared on Steam last week, they all showed 0% completion. Now some of them are showing as being completed by 0.1% of the player community.

Is this just people using Steam Achievement Manager to reward themselves, or has an early release version of No Step Back already hit the market?

I may have misunderstood something but if i'm correct, some content creators already have a playable version of NSB. Though they obviously can't show it yet, as it is still under embargo till the 22nd.
