HOI4 Dev Diary - Bag of Tricks #2

Welcome to another bag of tricks dev diary for 1.5 “Cornflakes” and the unannounced expansion. Today we have several smaller features and improvements for you and all are connected to equipment in one way or the other.

Building your own stuff
Managing production lines is something you do all the time, and thus we want the interface to help you as much as possible. We have done several things to help out with this, like allowing you to collapse entries:
all_of_it.png

The UI now also has more filters, so its easy to just look at lines lacking resources, lines used for upgrade, lines going straight to stockpile etc. Its also possible to assign up to 150 factories to a line (not naval production lines) by using the x5 and x10 toggles.

boosted_line.png

Toggling on x5 lets you put down 5 factories with each click so its easier to manage big lines (this part is still a bit more work in progress than normal and may see changes before release though).

We have also added drag-and-drop to the production interface and the civilian construction interface too. It makes reordering and changing priorities a breeze. See the future! In moving pictures:

Hopefully this will make it a lot easier to manage things for everyone and if it proves popular we may start adding this to other interfaces too.

Taking other people's stuff
At the end of combats it will now be possible to capture enemy equipment. The divisions involved will grab stuff depending on participation (higher level maintenance companies help a lot here if you want to take full advantage of capturing). If the equipment isn't something the division needs it goes back to your stockpile. This one will be available for people with the DLC.

Getting rid of stuff you don't want

There are sometimes situations when you just want to get rid of some of your equipment stockpiles. Death or Dishonor added the ability to convert equipment, but that is not always applicable. For people who get the DLC we have now added the option of straight up cleaning out your stores of stuff you don’t need or want anymore. To avoid exploits around surrender where someone in MP would try to destroy things to keep them out of enemy hands these are held in a special “being destroyed” storage, and will be accessible to the conqueror if you fall within 90 days.
destroy.png

Also finally there is another way available to all. Lend Lease has been changed to allow to send equipment that isn’t originally yours. This means that you can give captured stuff to your allies etc.
lendlease.png

Sending equipment that isn't yours like this will however not give you any XP (you wasn't the one who did research and development after all).

See you all next week for more updates and details!

Also, do you need more friends to invade and annex? Tell them to take a look at our new stream starting later today, Blitzkrieg for dummies! As always on Twitch: https://go.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive .

If I lend-lease out some foreign produced equipment will the original producer get exp from it? Im just wondering if the mechanism is disabled in this case which it really should be.

Great changes! Please could we also get the option to toggle all filters on/off as well? Having more filters gives us more specific info, but also more clicks.

And please don't remove the option to Shift + Click to send items to top or bottom of the list!

EDIT: Now is the time for us to be able to see what equipment our allies are short on :)

Can you also please, please add a few stat pages:
Most importantly a naval casualties list, where I can see naval ship sunk by me and naval ship lost (and by whom)... On a separate page, looking at units lost and clicking on every ship with a kill takes a long time.

@podcat

I have one problem that isn't addressed here with taking equipment that aren't your. Especially very noticeable with infantry equipment but to a less extend can apply to other kind like airplane and tank what not.

If I take infantry equipment named something I am not familiar and have no way of determining if it is the "equivalent" of infantry equipment 3.

The same is true if I manage to capture a Tupolev Tu-4 (strategic bomber for Russia) and I would be like what the heck is that?

Since it seems that we may be getting more equipment that aren't your to start with. You may want to address this oversight before this goes live!

This is where, if I had any photoshop talent, I'd take a screenshot of the auction house/exchange from an MMO, and shop in HOI4 equipment.

Use the bidding feature from M.U.L.E. (old game, the copyright probably has expired by now!)

Hi, Lemos here, you know one thing that I would like to see?
When see that I have missing equipment I always have trouble finding what I need to produce, if you guys could make it in a way that when I open the window to choose from the different equipment to show me what I need to do that would be really helpful. Thanks.

While we're on the subject of sorting things, is there any chance we could get ships to be sorted by class instead of name in the transfer ships interface? They are already sorted this way when you look at the fleet they're in. I've attached a picture for clarity.

Yeah, been requesting this since release. Please @podcat .

Sending equipment that isn't yours like this will however not give you any XP (you wasn't the one who did research and development after all).

Also finally there is another way available to all. Lend Lease has been changed to allow to send equipment that isn’t originally yours. This means that you can give captured stuff to your allies etc.

The way the system works right now would mean all kinds of strange behaviour like the original owner gaining XP for the enemy using their own tanks against them.

Wait. Does this mean giving captured equipment to my allies results in XP going to my enemies, as if my enemies had directly lend-leased the stuff to my allies themselves? I do hope it's something you intend to sort out before release.

Now that you have introduced the capture equipment feature.how will deleting your troops in a pocket effect people capturing your equipment. As what happens if I delete my troops when their encircled.does my enemy get any equipment.Otherwise this will be exploited and will make no sense.Just as the current system of the enemy getting 20% of their manpower back when their encircled makes no sense.will this be changed @podcat

Ok, how about making construction interface sortable via the buttons at the top? Why didn't you have this in since 1.0???
Also make production sortable while not affecting priority so we can organize things neatly.

I had a thought just then...

This might disincentivise the Panther Rush kind of strategy a little, because the more Panthers that Germany uses, the more will be captured and turned against them...

Not to go all Cato on you with "Furthermore, inconsistent UI elements must be made uniform," but: Hard Attack and Soft Attack and Supply Use should all have the second word capitalized for consistency.

Also some neat UI and mechanics changes.

I'd suggest destroying equipment might yield some XP, representing testing of captured stuff for analysis of strengths and weaknesses.

I second this. Land-based equipment for land exp; aircraft for air exp and nobody cares about boats. Probably a tiny fraction per IC-day equivalent of destroyed equipment. There are plenty of historical examples of forces using captured equipment for testing and target practice, so it fits the theme.

Hmm... using equipment captured in battle seems like a nice idea, but other than German use of Russian equipment, did it happen that much? But then again the only reason this might be annoying is that you'd end up with stockpiles full of random weapons, but this already happens, and this DLC will give you a way of getting rid of the stockpile.

All-in-all seems like a good change.

Some people have pointed out a few examples but:

The Soviets made pretty extensive use of German equipment. Especially trucks and things the game deems "support equipment". There's also the more combat-capable Su-76i. Soviet doctrine favored using up captured tanks and guns until they no longer worked or ammo was fully expended.

The British and Americans also did use captured German equipment to a lesser extent. Their logistics and production tended to cover their needs more reliably, but there are several instances of units not on the main-line having to contend with captured equipment. Captured Panzerschrecks were somewhat preferred over the PIAT and bazooka. Use of armored vehicles and artillery were probably the next most frequent (I recall hearing some reserve troops in France were saddled with captured equipment during the main Allied thrust into the Hürtgen forest due to shortages until supplies caught up).

This has a basic write-up that probably makes capture equipment look more used than it was.

It'd be nice if the captured equipment could be hit with a 20% attrition modifier or something to represent the lapse in the logistical chain, but maybe that's difficult to implement on an item-by-item basis. The equipment capture ratio also seems like it'd be a good candidate for a German focus tree item or modifier when national unity (or equivalent) gets low.

AWESOME FINALLY

I'm loving drag-and-drop, plus lend-leasing captured equipment at last.
