HOI4 Dev Diary - Back from PdxCon

Hi everyone! We are now back from PdxCon (most of us) and landing in our new offices, so brace for a ton of pictures! Oh and we announced the new expansion! If you haven't see the trailer <3 start there:

PdxCon 2019
PdxCon this year was imo one of the best ones so far. It was held in the Funkhaus Berlin. This place was super cool, and was basically the center of all radio and recording for DDR from the 50s until the german reunification.

We had announcements (among them CK3 and La Résistance!), LAN parties, presentations and Q&A sessions with fans as well as a scramble-for-africa multiplayer game on sunday. Most of all though it was super fun to chat with fans and modding groups (several ones were there!)

Animals in the audience?

In our booth we ran a challenge which we plan to be an achivement for LaR, just like we did with 30min of Hel last year. It was called "Don't Die for your Country" and was to capitulate France and Poland as Germany with as few of your own casualties as possible (and no using paratroopers). The final score was 475 casualties :O

@Voigt was the winner, and you can read about how he did it here.

We had a ton of fun and basically just crashed when we got home ;D it felt a lot like coming home from a music festival :)

La Résistance

So 'ere we go... Our next expansion is now announced: La Résistance!

Its main theme is Espionage and Resistance and the main country focuses are France, both sides of the Spanish Civil War as well as Portugal. We will be starting off by going through espionage in the coming weeks in details
For more info check out the announce post and there will probably be uploads of videos from PDXCon and my talks popping up on youtube in the near future.
also here is a fresh unused screenshot to wet your appetites...

I’m going to be crotchety: I don’t care about the new office, particularly in the HOI4 dev diary. In the studio forum? Sure. There’s effectively no new information about the game itself here.

@podcat
Will each country have just one intelligence agency, or more, if they historically had various organizations?
The Soviet Union seems to get NKVD, but they also had the Soviet military intelligence GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate).
The German military intelligence was Abwehr, but the SS had SD (Sicherheitsdienst) as it's competitor.
The Great Britain had Directorate of Military Intelligence, that included MI5 (counterintelligence) and MI6 (spies), among others. But during the WWII the British also had SOE (Special Operations Executive) that did not belong the DMI.
In the USA conterintelligence belonged to the FBI, but they also formed OSS (Office of Strategic Services) for foreign operations.
And so on.

How is the spysystem working of different but collaberating factions. So Allies and Comintern, aswell as Axis and Co-Prospertisy Sphere?
There are multiple Spymasters, one per faction I would think.

Can these collaberating factions spy on each other, maybe even let them spy, so the spymaster level gets higher, or some usefull systems get unlocked?

And the entire "Civil War" thing is just dumb, and one of many nerfs to punish players that don't want to spend 210 days shooting themselves in the foot.

Well Stalin did shoot himself in the foot with all his purges, and it contributed to the Soviet Union being weaker than it should of in the early years of the war. Players won't do something so blatantly stupid like the purges without some kind of downside if they don't, and in-game the penalty for not purging is what Stalin was paranoid about actually happening, Trotsky returning and starting a civil war.

I do agree that it shouldn't take a 210 day focus to do this, however. It would probably be better if it was a standard 70 day focus, starting a series of events lasting 210 days, but allowing you to work on other things in the mean time.

In the espionage screenshot it shows a spy behind bars, presumably arrested. Will this mean that there are no double agents? German intelligence was infamous for its failure to keep anyone from being flipped or caught in Britain.

Surely arrestable agents are a prerequisite for a double-agent mechanic, not an obstacle to one?!

More likely would be replacing the current 210 day focuses (there are 3) with 3 normal 70 day focuses (1 each for Army, Navy, and Air Force).

Knowing an agent’s been arrested kinda makes it hard for them to be a double agent, though. Why would you expect them to be effective when their cover has been blown?

Generally, you get around this by not sending your enemies a letter telling them that you have captured their agent.

Let’s take a look at the picture in the diary with the espionage screen. You can see three agents, two of which are on the map and active. One is behind bars in their portrait. These things imply those are Soviet spies, not Polish ones. So, if the Soviets know one of their spies is behind bars, that begs the question “Can there be double agents or are all discovered spies immediately jailed?” Do you understand?

Is there any way for neutrals (e.g. Kaiserreich) to intitiate Coups with the new system?
its run from scripts now so modders should be able to loosen restrictions etc

A lot of agents also managed to "escape"

What he means is that just because that one agent has been arrested, doesn't mean one of your other agents who are not arrested doen't end up being double agents afterall.

Having arrested agents doesn't automatically exclude the possibility of having a double agent mechanic.
