Europa Universalis IV - 8 June 2021 - New monuments chosen for 1.31.5

Good news everyone! Today we’ll be presenting the new monuments that shall be introduced in 1.31.5 (coming soon, for those who wonder).

But first, let me introduce myself. I’m Pavía, and I’ve been a forumite for more than 15 years before joining Paradox Tinto team, a couple months ago. Apart from being in the Forums, I’ve spent most of this time playing Paradox games for thousands of hours, since the first Europa Universalis. Oh, and I also hold a Ph.D. in Medieval History, but that’s probably the less important thing in my current CV.

That said, onto the monuments. First I’ll present to you the ones that were most voted among the community:

The first is El Escorial, the famous palace-monastery built at the orders of king Philip II in the outskirts of Madrid:

The second one is the Holy City of Jerusalem. As it’s known, this city is a sacred place for Judaism, Christianism and Islam, and that religious crossroad is portrayed:

Finally, the last one most voted was Cerro Rico del Potosí, the richest silver mine in South America, and a place that once hosted the most populous city in the region.

But, apart from that, the Tinto team also voted for three more internally:

The first is the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest site for Muslims worldwide, and the place were the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is made.

Last, but not least, is the Imperial City of Hue, built by the Nguyen dynasty as a symbol for a unified Dai Viet.

Finally, we got a lot of feedback from the community, and we also think that it’s a good idea to replace one of the current monuments for other more interesting choice, and reworking it, as this was pretty requested:

That is the Belém Tower replacing the Pena Palace in Lisbon, as we think that it’s a symbol of the city since the Age of Discoveries.

About the modifiers, take into account that this is work in progress, so both modifiers and values may be reviewed and changed, depending on testing and feedback received.

We hope that you like the new monuments chosen by both the community and the team, and that you also enjoy the wonderful work made by our artists, while playing with them in 1.31.5. See you!

Just to clarify a point here, if it is "alt history" then why is the monument named for the silver mine and not as would have been the case in 1444 Sumaq Urqu which was not mined by the indigenous Andean population. It was not mined as a silver mine until the Spanish Conquest, when they gave it the name "rich mountain". If the monument is there to enable "alt history" then maybe write it as such.
I agree. Maybe a name change would be in order then.

I have to disagree on the notion that EU4 (or any game really) is the wrong medium to raise awareness of the atrocities performed by our ancestors. However, there are a lot of them and to merely single out Cerro rico del Potosi seems a bit odd.

This looks great! Wonderful choices!

Also, now I'm getting my hopes up that Africa will get some love in an update soon. In particular, I've been dying to play Mali with some local love ... and the potential to launch a 1000 ships for the New World.

They still counted votes from bots... New monuments is always good, and ok, we get most from voting. But why Hue Palace is added? We have a big amount of Monuments in Indonesia. However, Center and South China don't have any(closest one is Confucian Temple, probably)

The spanish bots should have been punished with 0 monuments for the next Year after their action. I can understand the need for one in Vietnam, as it was a more important kingdom than pegu and siam. Who have 3 and it was a used one not like the one on Java with where rediscovered after colonisation.

Guyz please explain to me why... why this game starts in the 15th century and Italy only have 1 world wonder...

are you blind? Florence (the centre of renascence), the Duomo of Milan, Venice with its arsenal and Piazza Maggiore, Naples, Palermo...
In fact, Italy is THE COUNTRY with the highest amount of wonders....

You only placed 1 ww in Rome.... ok Rome... let's talk about Rom... Rome alone merits more than 2 ww

i hope that you will improve at list Milan Naples Palermo Florence and Venice for 1 ww each (also bologna has a 400 years old university already in 1480' but with your awful policies this is useless... )

In that case, wouldn't it make sense for the +25% defensiveness from the event in non-leviathan to be included in the monument bonuses in Leviathan?

Because otherwise Leviathan would be essentially removing the defensiveness modifier of the Belem Tower, which was the whole point of the tower.

Unless the event has different effects that also include the defensiveness modifier?
This makes sense actually, I agree.

Well, I didn't put them because the post would be too blobby IMHO, but they will be:

- No requirements: Potosí and Belém Tower.
- Culture requirements: El Escorial (Iberian group).
- Religious: Muslim (Kaaba and Djenné), Muslim, Christian or Jewish (Jerusalem), Confucian (Hue).
@Pavía I did not notice this post but I don't think having religious constriction for The Huế Imperial City is a good idea. Đại Việt starts off as a Mahayana rather than Confucian and only changes to Confucian after this event:

E3V8OnP.png

Granted, its MTTH is 60 months, but there is still a chance that it will never fire at all, correct? Further more, it will restrict the freedom of playstyle as some players may want to play as Buddhist instead of Confucian. Let not forget that the only Đại Việt achievement requires that you stay Mahayana instead of converting. Also, if you think about it, the Imperial city is just a palace & citadel. It is no different that The Grand Palace of Bangkok or The Versailles and don't really have that much religious connotation.

For China's Forbidden City, it is probably make sense for Confucian requirement since the monument is tied in with China's Mandate of Heaven gameplay. However, Dai Viet probably don't toy around with the mandate that much and thus it should not restrict the players to go another route.

Thank you for having put not only the monuments voted but some more besides putting the tower of Belem which was very necessary, as well as the Escorial, the Kaaba or Jerusalem Holy City. Congratulations to all the team, your effort is appreciated!!!! I hope that if there is an election or a decision to add a monument to Korea for example, which is an important country in Asia that does not have a monument yet. It could be the Gyeongbokgung. I also hope that China, Italy and Spain will receive more monuments, not only because Italy and Spain had their great period of cultural splendour during the time of the game, but also because these three countries that I mentioned are the ones that have more Unesco heritage and it would be understandable that they would be the countries with more monuments and one that I see very important is the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, as it is one of the most important places of pilgrimage of Christianity. But I'm getting very long-winded. Thanks for your great work and congratulations!

For the record, it was already said that it will be changed (no details on how exactly, yet).

Interesting. Just one thing bothers me. Why do all muslim monuments give positive piety? One granting mysticism would be a nice change (iirc the samarkhand one did in its first iteration)
perhaps, they could give whatever the owner has more. If the owning country is mysticist, it grants mysticism, if pious, then piety

I got exactly 1 request for a monument in germany which is the "Goslarer Kaiserpfalz" it was quite a meaningful building and one of the greatest of its kind. Additionally it was the favourite seat of the Salier emperors during the 11th century

More sources of Harmony? Great.

Portugal finally loses their ahistorical monument and instead has the community-voted one added? Amazing.

Mecca and Jerusalem both get monuments? Perfect.

Also excited to see that missionary strength against heathens is now a thing.

This almost persuaded me to buy Leviathan, fixing concentrate development and giving Korea a monument might actually push me over the edge. *wink*
Korea definitely needn't be that high on the monument priority list

Goslar was declining hard at the time of the game, with no importance to its location.
