EUIV - Development Diary - 3rd of March 2020

Hey! So today’s development diary will be a bit shorter as we’ll have something really juicy to show later today at 15:00 CET. Something which a lot of you have been waiting for a long time and are as hyped up for as I am.

But of course for the ones that can’t wait that long, let’s talk about some of the new features coming in 1.30.

First feature is that the Kingdom of God has gotten a bit of a do-over to not be such a trap decision anymore. Previously it would disable the Curia removing an entire feature from the game as a “reward”. Now this doesn’t really fit with us both wanting to make the Pope more of a power player among the Catholics but also give the Catholics more features to play with.

I’ve seen suggestions on the forum for the Papal States to be given a new tag if they take the decision, but for technical reasons we want to keep the PAP tag around, so we figured out a different way to reward the player. Upon declaring the Kingdom of God the Papal States will be renamed and given a new unique government reform that promotes them up to Empire rank.

We will no longer disable the Curia when the Kingdom of God decision is taken. Instead we will be giving you some new goodies that we will cover more in detail in a future Catholic focused development diary as it will play in with some of the new features we've worked on.

Now as we did this we also realized that the old Unify Islam decision could do some touches up as well. For one we removed the requirement that you need to convert your entire realm. It doesn’t jive well with the name and since the conception of the decision we’ve added several mechanics that require that you keep non-muslims around. Like the Dhimmi or the Janissaries.

But as you can see we have also changed the decision rewards. If taken you will now become known as The Caliphate and be given Feudal Theocracy as a government reform.

Next is some more Quality of Life, because you can never have enough of that. It goes a bit in the same vein as the change we did with warning you of that the Innovativeness Gain from Tech and Ideas are about to time out.

The alert for when you are about to hit your maximum cap for monarch power have been changed so it will popup if you hit it in 3 months instead of at the moment of when it’s too late. Now when you do actually hit the upper limit it will turn red instead to really try and grab your attention.

And I want to finish with some changes to the Introduce new heir mechanics. First up England starts with 100 Legitimacy again and in cases like the War of the Roses, Granadan Succession war or other similar things, we will instead be looking at claim strength of the heir or check if the dynasty is of the correct one to avoid cheating yourself out of it. Also to not allow you to cheat out of being a potential junior partner in a PU, anyone you have a royal marriage with will gain a Claim Throne CB on you.

All of the changes mentioned in this development diary except the Introduce New Heir new behavior is part of the 1.30 Patch. That’s it for the Development Diary, stay peeled for 15:00 CET for more information! Next development diary will be about the Estates and how we have changed how you play with them completely.

Did Great Britain get a new Colour in the new patch? The new screenshot on Steam looks like it, doesn't it?

Huh, surprise Hussites.

Well, since they refused to share any content about Bohemia and argued that too much would be <REDACTED>, we knew that something major would be coming. But I did not expect Hussite faith to become on par with other Christian denominations. Hussites did not exactly want to secede from the Church and in the end they were integrated, so it's not really faithful to real history. But on the other hand reformation and secession from church was still not widespread concept at that time and it is possble that Hussitism would eventually secede, given different historical circumstances, so the scenario is still pretty plausible for a fantasy history game.

Which nations got the new mission trees?

So far, we've seen mission trees for the HRE electors (Bavaria, Saxony/Thuringia, Brandenburg/Prussia, Cologne/Mainz/Trier, and The Palatinate), Dithmarschen, larger Italian states (Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples & Savoy), France, Provence, Dutch minors/Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and the Crusader states (The Knights, Cyprus, Epirus, Athens, Naxos & Jerusalem). In addition, mission trees for Italy, Germany, unified Holy Roman Empire, Burgundy, Bohemia and Croatia have been confirmed, and it's been implied that Switzerland and the Papal State might get mission trees as well. Finally, it was mentioned Bulgaria would get something that encouraged them to reform the Bulgarian Empire, which could be a decision or a small mission tree.

The Papal State will still always be the papal controller after you enacted the decision of the Kingdom of God?
Or the election system remains?
Probably will have the election system remain but give the PAP some unfair advantages. We're still tweaking :)

Wooo! Better unify Islam decision finally. Been waiting for this since before cradle of civilization.

Isn't this still pretty ahistorical? As far as I'm aware, the only amicable changes in the ruling dynasties of European states were the result of strategic marriages; the children can't be both Habsburgs and Trastámaras, after all. It might make at least some sense if the new heir had a weak claim and was of the same dynasty to represent a ruling family frantically searching for a new heir to prevent another, potentially foreign, family from taking the throne.

I'll just say it's a little disappointing to have substantively ahistorical mechanics in two DLCs in a row (this and minority expulsion).

Wondering if it was still possible to expand the Defender of the Faith mechanics to other religions, I think it would be really fun for nations of other religions.

I also really liked the name change to The Caliphate, but perhaps instead of that, it could change to the "[Name of the original country] Caliphate" such as "Ottoman Caliphate" or "Mamluk Caliphate" instead.

I notice the first in tech alert is red, too. Is this because the monarch points are capped or is it going to be always red? Personally, I'd advise against it being red, because Red is for things that need immediate attention, and knowing when and when not to blow an extra 400 monarch points on a tech is something new players will struggle with, especially if it's made to seem like something that needs immediate attention.

All Kings of France are Capets, but we don't call the Valois or Bourbon kings "Capet".

Hello!

Thanks for the wonderful dev diary. One question/suggestion. Would you be open to changing the color of the caliphate tag? The current sand color looks very similar to the Mamluks. My suggestion would be some kind of black color. Basically, a resurrection of the caliphate draws inspiration from the previous ones, but the foundational one is the Rashudin under Mohammad. If memory serves me right, his battle standard was a solid black flag or banner. If not that color, perhaps a green color (that is different than Arabia) as green has historically been associated with Islam.

The Caliphate isn't a new tag, it merely renames the tag that reformed it into "The Caliphate". So in this example, it was indeed the Mamluks who became the Caliphate.
