EU4 - Development Diary - 9th of October 2018

Welcome all to today’s dev diary, where I’ll be covering the long-awaited Iberian and North African map update coming in the 1.28 ‘Spain’ update.

iberia_map.png

Nations released for the sake of example

As things currently stand, though as always things are subject to change before release, Iberia consists of 571 development over 63 provinces. This includes the Macaronesia area but now excludes Labourd, which has been returned to the French region.

In Aragon, the distinction between the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Valencia, and the Principality of Catalonia has become more pronounced. Tarragona is now rightly in the Catalonia area, and the province of Valencia has been split so that Castello and Xativa have become separate provinces. Valencia itself has the potential to be a very rich city indeed, as the player’s actions can lead to it becoming a major producer of silk. The three major Balearic Islands have become provinces in and of themselves, linked together by a strait and comprising their own Area.

Likewise, Galicia has seen itself grow from 1 province to 4, and now has an Area all to itself.

Portugal and Granada have been gifted one additional province each: Aveiro and Malaga respectively.

Last but not least, many citizens of Navarra are looking a little confused as they wonder where their coastline has gone. Wedged between major powers and with no immediate means of escape over the ocean, Navarra will be a very challenging nation in 1.28.

New releasable nations:

Valencia: The Kingdom of Valencia was a major constituent part of the Crown of Aragon in 1444. In 1.28 the former kingdom of El Cid will be a releasable nation.

Asturias: The Kingdom of Asturias ceased to exist long before our start date, but it nicely fills the absence of releasable nations in the region.

morocco_map.png

I’ve also taken another look at North Africa. Here we can see several new provinces along the coast, including those belonging to new nations that can emerge during the game.

The province of Demnate allows a route through the Atlas mountains; a convenient shortcut and potentially a deadly choke-point.

The Canary Islands have been split between Gran Canaria and Tenerife to represent the somewhat incomplete Castilian conquest and colonization of the islands.

For the masochists among you who play as Granada, they now have a core on the province on Ceuta.

New releasable nations:

Salé and Tétouan: Home to some of the most infamous Barbary Pirates, these nations will be releasable in 1444, and may emerge dynamically in the course of the game in the style of Habsan.

fezzan_map.png

Finally, I’ve made some minor changes to the eastern Maghreb. The province of Kairwan has been added for Tunis, and the addition of Sabha has allowed a more aesthetic redrawing of Fezzan’s borders.

That’s all for today. Next week, @Groogy will reveal some of the new features coming in the as yet unnamed Immersion pack to be released alongside 1.28.

The fear is that we are actually going to get even less than those ImmPacks. I count something like 15 added provinces in Iberia proper (counting the split of the Baleares, 16 if you count Canarias split as part of Iberia), ie. 34% more provinces, while the British Isles proper got something like 20 new provinces, a 57% increase in a smaller less populated area. But again, maybe the new mechanics will compensate, the ones in Rule Britannia were very underwhelming.

Positive mind, we only have a development diary at the moment, we will see what they bring us tomorrow.

Just one last thing; there is some relevance to the idea of the Lisbon province being separated from Setubal by Ribatejo but linked by a strait since the Tagus estuary has many times been strategically critical to stop incursions into Lisbon itself.

Shouldn't it be possible to prevent troops from moving from Alentejo to Lisbon by sea-controlling the so-called Gulf of Cadiz? Or does it seem unrealistic? It was the whole dynamic behind the Lines of Torres Vedras as well as several other sieges in the city as early as the 14th century.

I think that tomorrow I'll keep being dissapointed about Portugal's map. Hope I'm wrong.
Let's give them a month or maybe two to fully process it.

IF they take our feedback at heart, of course.

Yeah, and it's not like we can't keep reminding them to do something about it in the new DDs.... though I hope we won't have to.

And I'm not even from Spain XD

Ah good old Portuguese pessimism. But I'm with you, my expectations are at historical lows.

I repeat; 45+ pages is a completely natural reaction to the region being relatively ignored for 5 years even though it was originally listed as one of the games' main focus areas. I sincerely hope we keep remembering things to be grievous about so we can address them all at once with this DLC.

Ah good old Portuguese pessimism. But I'm with you, my expectations are at historical lows.

It's not pessimism.. it's reality.. 2 years ago I talked with some1 (?) from EU's facebook page "asking" for more provinces in the portuguese map.. some months later i saw they split Alentejo in 2, creating Beja and Évora... it was almost orgasmic ahahahhahahah I play EU since Portugal was only 4 provinces: "Algarve; Tagus; Oporto and The Azores"... it was the EU1. I remeber I sent one ss where I drew some provinces in Portugal and I rememebr I was asking for Setúbal. After all theses years, I've been losing hope about the game. at this moment I think that Portugal deserves much more then only Setúbal (or Aveiro as we see) as I asked some years ago... and it's kinda annoying watching Scotland.. Ireland.. England.. Northern France.. Netherlands.. I agree with all those provinces, but i wonder why? Especially about Sco and Ire.. but and Portugal? When i start the game I have to choose what forts I may destroy because i'll get a bankruptcy if i don't do that.. distroy Tangiers? Ceuta? Évora? We start the game losing money and when we start the colonization it's worst. baaah.. let's see.. cross fingers.

Spain and Portugal are a bad joke at this moment. Developers have ignored for 5 years our golden age.

Immersion Pack is not enough.
Hopefully they will add a few provinces, and give them some fort defense and shock damage defense as well. Porportionally, Galicia got the most additions. Maybe this will be a Galicia immersion pack with a Spain/Italy DLC to follow.

Suffice it to say, more attention was payed in turning The Baleares into 3 provinces and adding a colonizable province to the Canaries (nothing against it) than in adding more to Portugal. At least that is how it feels when I look at the map changes. Also no salt and the Gulf of Cadiz bathing the Alentejo makes me laugh.
It is just laziness. They see three isles and they say "Let's make them three provinces!" even if Ibiza was totally irrelevant. A lot of mods do it. They don't know anything about history so they add things based in elemental geography.

Why Ibiza/Menorca/western canarias are more important then Minho, Setúbal or Leiria? That's what we saw in the new map... let's see what we get next...
Ibiza is completely irrelevant at the time. I don't understand why is going to be added .Minorca was not important either. However, like Gibraltar, it became a British territory after the War of the Spanish Succession. So, if Gibraltar is province, Minorca should be too.
But, I agree, Portugal only getting one province, Averio (which a the time was not very important either) is quite dissapointing
And Central Spain is quite bad as well
