EU4 - Development Diary - 9th of October 2018

Welcome all to today’s dev diary, where I’ll be covering the long-awaited Iberian and North African map update coming in the 1.28 ‘Spain’ update.

iberia_map.png

Nations released for the sake of example

As things currently stand, though as always things are subject to change before release, Iberia consists of 571 development over 63 provinces. This includes the Macaronesia area but now excludes Labourd, which has been returned to the French region.

In Aragon, the distinction between the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Valencia, and the Principality of Catalonia has become more pronounced. Tarragona is now rightly in the Catalonia area, and the province of Valencia has been split so that Castello and Xativa have become separate provinces. Valencia itself has the potential to be a very rich city indeed, as the player’s actions can lead to it becoming a major producer of silk. The three major Balearic Islands have become provinces in and of themselves, linked together by a strait and comprising their own Area.

Likewise, Galicia has seen itself grow from 1 province to 4, and now has an Area all to itself.

Portugal and Granada have been gifted one additional province each: Aveiro and Malaga respectively.

Last but not least, many citizens of Navarra are looking a little confused as they wonder where their coastline has gone. Wedged between major powers and with no immediate means of escape over the ocean, Navarra will be a very challenging nation in 1.28.

New releasable nations:

Valencia: The Kingdom of Valencia was a major constituent part of the Crown of Aragon in 1444. In 1.28 the former kingdom of El Cid will be a releasable nation.

Asturias: The Kingdom of Asturias ceased to exist long before our start date, but it nicely fills the absence of releasable nations in the region.

morocco_map.png

I’ve also taken another look at North Africa. Here we can see several new provinces along the coast, including those belonging to new nations that can emerge during the game.

The province of Demnate allows a route through the Atlas mountains; a convenient shortcut and potentially a deadly choke-point.

The Canary Islands have been split between Gran Canaria and Tenerife to represent the somewhat incomplete Castilian conquest and colonization of the islands.

For the masochists among you who play as Granada, they now have a core on the province on Ceuta.

New releasable nations:

Salé and Tétouan: Home to some of the most infamous Barbary Pirates, these nations will be releasable in 1444, and may emerge dynamically in the course of the game in the style of Habsan.

fezzan_map.png

Finally, I’ve made some minor changes to the eastern Maghreb. The province of Kairwan has been added for Tunis, and the addition of Sabha has allowed a more aesthetic redrawing of Fezzan’s borders.

That’s all for today. Next week, @Groogy will reveal some of the new features coming in the as yet unnamed Immersion pack to be released alongside 1.28.

Well, let's be fully honest here: the sole reason Portugal was not conquered outright by whoever is that pretty much nobody, except in very specific occasions, had any interest in doing so since the late 1600s. And even then, it wasn't realy conquest that was the goal of the very few invasions that Portugal has suffered.
So when the Spanish and French invaded in the mid 1700s and again in the early 1800s, they didn't actually want to conquer Portugal? The plans they had made to divide the land between them were fiction?

All very nice. But the fact is: nobody tried. Which I see as a clear indicator that they weren't really interested.

And no one tried per say to conquer Spain at some points, does not meant they would not have if they could.

Granada is the one that lasted 10 years of war until it was conquered, and it only has one fort in the capital, which can be reached right away from Castille.

You've revamped Spain and North Africa twice in the past year, but we are still waiting for the much-needed Balkan renovation. Not complaining about this update, but please make the Balkans your next focus. The situation there seriously needs to improve, so we can finally see some colour other than purple or vomit green in our games over there.

Somehow I know DDRJake is lobbying the rest of the team to stop any developments going on in the Balkans :p

The last time Iberia was updated was 2 years ago and they only added Évora to Portugal.
Spain itself did not have any new provinces since June of 2015 with Common Sense ( since then only a couple of provinces redrawn at the end of that year if remember correctly, but no new ones).

But that does not mean I don't think the Balkans don't need any attention. In fact, I think the should work there ASAP

I was checking the actual trade resource at the Canary islands, sugar, its fine and it was one of the most useful products not only for alcohol but also to filter seawater for the ships.
but now that your separating it into 2 provinces I will suggest give more variety.

the wine of lazarote was a few times mention by Shakespeare: https://www.lanzaroteguidebook.com/news/features/details-228/canary-connections-william-shakespeare or http://www.lanzaroteinformation.com/content/shakespeare-canary-islands

but not really the most important, you should check the dye: "The first period of the conquest of the Canaries was carried out by the Norman nobles Jean de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle. Their motives were basically economic: Bethencourt possessed textile factories and dye works and the Canaries offered a source of dyes such as the orchil lichen." wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquest_of_the_Canary_Islands this orchils was incredible valuable since it can be used to produce purple (the emperors color)

And lately, with the discovery of America the red dye, that still been used at food or cosmetic for red carmin, and at old times the color for bishops and many others high position people. So it was a strong part of the economy.

As a last option, in the Canary Islands there are abundant wood with a fire proof very strong core called tea, from the local pinus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_canariensis, this wood was a good material for ships construction and reparation and also from his resine "la pez" or at lating the pix, really useful to waterproof the the ships hull.

Portugal could easily have 10 provinces on the mainland and counting North Africa, the Azores, and Madeira bringing up the total number to a well deserved 13.

Castile however is the one that really deserves the chopping knife.

Portugal should have 15! 13 on mainland + Madeira and Açores...
Braga; Bragança; Porto; Aveiro; Coimbra; "Beira"; Leiria; Lisboa; Évora; Elvas; Setúbal; Beja; Algarve; Açores and Madeira!

No one invaded england in EU4 period, why do they have 30 provinces? 1 big 200 dev province is more than enough by your ideas...
No one invaded Norway in EU4, why do they have 10 provinces?
Mate your argument is just outright sad, as others explained, portugal had around 7 european wars against Castille/Spain and France, 3 offensive, 4 defensive. I know its not a lot, but also fought a lot in India, Brazil, Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, China, Arabia, etc...
Most of the portuguese wars was outside portuguese mainland, but so did England...
Ireland for sure was not more important than Portugal in eu4 period and still they are smaller in area and have more procinces...

Thats a lot of disrespect from you, if you don't know portuguese history, don't comment at all.
England was invaded in EUIV's time period. Multiple times if I recall correctly, but the most well known is the Glorious Revolution, where William of Orange (Stadtholder of Dutch Republic) overthrew the king and placed himself on the throne.
Norway was also invaded multiple times by Sweden. They even took 3 of the provinces Norway has in 1444 (1 was given back shortly after the conquest). Sweden even lost a king trying to siege down a Norwegian fort (Charles XII/Carolus Rex). The last Swedish invasion of Norway was when Norway ignored the Treaty of Kiel in 1814 and declared independence, prompting Sweden to invade and place it under a PU.
However, that does not mean Portugal has enough provinces. I would definitely support more provinces in Portugal. I was surprised they only got 1 new province. I probably would have made it 11 or 12 on the mainland. Perhaps something like this (ignore the rest of the map; it's from an old mod that's not been updated since 1.11):

I agree, Portugal (and Central Spain too) deserves more provinces. And the map of Portugal you posted is surprisingly similar to the one I proposed in my suggestion thread

Edit: Now that is a good province setup for Portugal
