Welcome to another development diary about Europa Universalis. Now we are very close to the announcement of the new expansion that we aim to release in June... If Frö smiles upon us....

TAWRQLR.jpg

We have switched around what we will talk about in the development diaries for now, so today we’ll instead talk about Peace!

But first of all, lets talk about a feature that is something that some have requested..

Return Province!
Sometimes you have taken a province that is the core of a rival, or someone who do not want to buy the province, or even talk to you as you are so evil.. Not that we would ever be warmongering-alliance-breaking-world-conquerers..

Now you can just return the province to any state that has it as a core. You will lose some Agressive Expansion and prestige, but it will definitely reduce the chance of them attacking you in the short-term.

Peace Overhaul

This is obviously something that is in the accomanying patch.

First of all, we removed the treaty called annex.

..

.

Well, instead we are now able to target every province an enemy own, so taking all provinces is an annexation.

You will also always be able to demand the capital in a peace treaty, and you also do not need to occupy territory to demand it in peace, however unoccupied territory is more expensive to claim.

Revoking cores will no longer cost diplomatic power.

Diplomatic Power Cost, War Score Costs and Prestige gain for each province now scale with the province’s development, instead of being fixed costs.

Overextension and Agressive Expansion also looks at development instead of base tax.

And finally, you’ll be able to demand gold even while “annexing”.

arguably present - eurocentrism

This doesn't need to be argued at all. The game is called Europa Universalis and is focused on Europe and all the expansions have dealt mostly with European history or areas affected by European history. Just the fact that every other region is called the "ROTW" is a pretty good indicator of where the game stands. Does this mean I'm angry, upset, and hate the developers? Well maybe a little upset, but that doesn't mean I don't want the improvements this expansion will bring. Why can't we agree to like the expansion, and also agree that the game is Eurocentrist, which should be self evident looking at the title, the way the technology and idea groups woat the same time? Please don't argue that the "ROTW" has so and so improvements. They are puny and incomparable to the meat of the content which is entirely focused upon Europe.

you guys realize that under the new system the Development level of a nation is basically what would call its base tax now right? The numbers Wiz gave was a total Developement level of nations, if it was highest average development per province then small nations might be reasonable to be highly ranked

However in this game the average development per province doesn't really mean much, if anything.

17 Dislikes on my first post and 7 on my second. Basicaly the proof how shitty great parts of the community are. Must be the worst ive ever joined.

I smell the next euro-centric expansion, while leaving the RotW as shitty as they still are. Now hate me, fanboys.

Well you weren't being awfully polite or nice to be fair. As for the socalled 'rest of the world' nations I would like to say that the scope of this game is already immense and very ambitious and the development team can only do so much. While the developers are never led astray by the whimsical wishes of the community, they do listen and I find that they tend to focus on areas and aspects of the game popular with the community. This is also in their own best interest of course, as they need revenue for their company and employees as well. Consequently not all nations, regions and gameplay aspects can be given the same level of attention and detail.

I don't see how you could miss such a big pop-up on your screen... unless you're the type of person who tries to get rid of pop-ups as fast as possible.

Maybe I've just gotten so anal after playing Ironman mode.

I agree that it could be annoying when all it got was a flag in the top left corner. But these days it's a pop up, or at least you have the option to set it as a such.

Actually I only play in Ironman mode
However my computer is rather slow even on Speed 5.
Therefore during down time (truce + waiting for AE to cool down) I'd love to be able to leave it running in background and only check it every 30 seconds or so.
Unfortunately this led to me missing call to arms in the past since there is no auto-pause option.

What is the specific message setting that I need to toggle ?
I do not think there is any.
Closest thing I could find was "When we are called to war as co-belligerent" which does not cover defensive call to arms.*

So yes if currently there is no way to set up an auto pause popup when called to war defensively, there definitely should be one.

----
Tried it on a new game, allied myself with Austria then let the game run in background with the above setting set to popup and pause. No dice. Still get Dishonored Alliance after a few years. No auto-pause instance encountered.

Currently, Paradox seem to keep one loading screen person per country. England/GB already have Elizabeth I.
Considering the background of Charles' pic, he'll "represent" Austria rather than Spain (who already have Isabella).

We I'm not sure, also becouse Austria was managed by his brother Ferdinand. Charles rapresent "The Empire", the ambition of a "Res public christianorum", the apex and the fall of universalism (he fit perfectly to the name EU)

Is not about a country, he controlled various jurisdiction (like many characters during the age), the famous quote "I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse." is a perfect example of his polycentrism. He was without a fixed court, and without a proper capital, was itinerant, even if used often Bruxelles, and was talking flemish, becouse he spent his young years in that lands. This is also why was considered a stranger in Spain with a revolt, but was also supported there after that, and had enemy in the Empire cause Lutheranism.

Charles was hated and loved in every area where he ruled more or less, Castille & Aragon, Italian kingdoms and duchies, flemish provinces, Holy Roman Empire etc... probably Charles V cannot be appoint to one country\nationality he was the last universal emperor or europe, only after him the empire was condemned to be only a private things of german princes.

Maybe I feel satisfied because I hoped for Buddhist flavour for months and here we go unique mechanic events and split on three parts.

To be fair we know nothing about patch notes and big patches tend to introduce such stuff as events for previously flavourless nations so we don't know if 1.12 won't give cute things to South East Asia.

After Buddhist upgrade and probably SEA upgrade my next hope will be expanded southern half of Africa (Kongo Basin, Zimbabwe, Great Lakes, Madagascar).

I like being able to take the capital like any other province but I am slightly worried about being able to take unoccupied provinces in the peace deal. If the AI is prone to taking this option it will result on AI England losing chunks of Britain evert time they lose a war (so pretty much always). I just don't see why this option is necessary (although perhaps is needed to balance the changes in to the fort/siege system)

AI probably won't take stuff it has no interest on/can't core.

AI will probably have a peace offer "acceptance malus" when dealing with unoccupied provinces.

This will continue to be a problem as long as Britain continues being weak and a push over for continental powers to fight.

So it could be something like this: Thirteen Colonies DOW French Louisiana. GB destroys French fleet, sends some troops to support. Warscore is obviously 100% and in peace deal GB takes Ile-de-France.
Quite absurd.
The more I think about this, the less I like the idea.
Probably going to be overwar goal and france would never accept, since its not part of the war goal (and you did not capture it). It would cost a lot to take Paris I bet. Developement levels, forts, etc.

This will continue to be a problem as long as Britain continues being weak and a push over for continental powers to fight.

As far as I am aware, it is exceedingly rare for Britain to get knocked beyond 10% warscore in a typical continental war once they are out of Calais. I always see them dragged into wars and typically they are losses (because their allies overestimate their potential without factoring in the inability of the Brits to help), and these are often just a white peace.

The exploit will be when I declare on some wimpy ally of Britain's, lets say Brittany, and 100% them, and then take a bunch of land bordering Scotland in the peace deal which gives me 100%. If they allow you to take provinces that are not sieged off the not war leader... dear fucking god...

Simple change, huge consequences!

Only thing I could ask more for when it comes for Peace...is some way for allies in a war to announce what they want. And for the War Leader to decide to respect it and make a peace the allies will like, or not.

I know people are burned at a stake for mentioning Victoria II...but I really liked asking Great Powers to join in a Crisis and offering them some stuff. Something like that should be in EU as well!
