EU4 - Development Diary - 31st March 2016

dev diary.jpg

Hello and welcome back. Mare Nostrum will be upon us very soon so I will take this last dev diary before release to show some extras and the 15 new achievements which will be part of the 1.16 patch. With Wiz safely banished to the furthest reaches of space to make friends with Blorg, I am free to ensure there are no more Eastern Roman Empire related Achievements.

The 15 new achievements, which some clever cookies may have seen before are:
  • Mare Nostrum: Restore the Roman Empire and own the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea coast lines.

  • Kuban Cigars: As Kuba, own or have a subject own Havana and be the world’s leading producer of Tobacco.

  • Kushite Restoration: As a Nubian culture nation, own the entire Egyptian region as core provinces.

  • The Fezzan Corridors: As Fezzan, control at least 90% of the trade power in Tunis, Katsina, Safi and Timbuktu.

  • Victorian Three: As Basoga, Buganda or Karagwe, reach administrative, diplomatic and military technology level 32.

  • The Animal Kingdom: As Manipur, unite the Bengal region and convert it to Animism.

  • Golden Horn: As a Somali nation, fully own the Horn of Africa region and have a monthly gold income of at least 50 ducats.

  • Kinslayer: As Tver, Yaroslavl, Ryazan or Odoyev, eliminate all other Rurikovich nations without changing your ruling dynasty.

  • Choson One: As Korea, own or have a subject own all Shinto, Confucian and Buddhist provinces in the world.

  • Sailor Mon: As Pegu, have at least 100,000 sailors.
  • The White Company: Hire your army out to both sides in a war and fight in a battle against your former employer.

  • Networking: Have 100 point spy networks in 3 rival nations.

  • Time Bandit: Successfully steal a map from another nation.

  • With a little help..: As Ragusa, lead a Trade League of at least 5 nations and guarantee the Ottomans’ independence

  • Just Resting In My Account: Corrupt the officials in a rival country
eu4_2.jpg

Going hand-in-hand with one of these achievements, we have added one of the longest requested formable nations: The Roman Empire. It is no easy task to perform, requiring Christianity or Paganism and ownership of the regions of Italy, France, Iberia, Balkans, Anatolia, Mashriq as well as certain key provinces, but doing so will allow you to recreate the thousand year empire and grant you the new unique culture of Roman.

rome.jpg

Forming Rome is a free feature, available as part of the 1.16 patch.

Next up is Timeline, a new Mare Nostrum feature

timeline1.jpg

At any point through your campaign you can hit the new timeline button next to the date and observe how the world has evolved throughout the years. Watch as empires rise and fall and re-live how your own nation rose to its great heights (hopefully)

timeline2.jpg

Opening Timeline will bring the map back to how it was at the start of your campaign and then you can choose at what speed to run through the world's history. You can pan all over the map during this timeline, so while the Big Blue Blob takes over Europe you can admire infighting new world natives or see which of the Daimyo's made Japan theirs.

Finally, some ideas, starting with the aforementioned Roman Empire

that would make +1 legitimacy ideas ridiculously overpowered
There are already effects in the game which grant Legitimacy or RT depending on your government.

They grant different amounts of those two things.

> Roman Empire tag (a nation that had been gone in its represented form for a millennium as of 1444, and that still had a direct link to the Roman Empire in Constantinople)
"GLORY OF ROME!"

> Lotharingia tag for Burgundy (a nation that had been gone for 500 years as of 1444, with at least one historical sovereign struggling for it)
"It makes no sense, lol, dead nation"

I don't understand these forums.
The Roman Empire TAG already was in the game due to the converter though.
But I agree that adding Lotharingia would be a really good decision and would be something makes quite a bit of sense given the ambitions of Burgundy. A Burgundy not getting divided would very well have ended up taking that title at some point.

Paradox should add a formable Atlantis. The Atlantean culture is already in the game, after all. It should be available to any country except for Shinto ones because we don't want to make that religion too interesting.

Wouldn't it much more likely be a decision for Lorraine?
I don't see why. After all historically it was Burgundy who really gunned for it and almost succeeded. Though having it available for several TAGs at the border between France and Germany would make sense.

The fact that this is available for pagans in general is also really weird. It's probably trying to hint at Hellenism, but Tengriism, any of the many African folk religions, Native American Totemism, the old Germanic religion, and Hellenism are all completely different. There's no unified single Pagan religion like Paradox seems to believe.

@DDRJake

Three quick questions:

1) for flavor purposes, can Rome get the same special treatment as Mongolia in regards to religion?

As in, Mongolia has a decision to convert to Buddhism for -4 stability. Can Rome get a decision to convert to Hellenism for -4 stability as well?

2). Safe to assume you guys would not want some suggestions on updating Roman ideas to be more historically accurate?

3) Have pagans gotten better conversion decisions this patch? If not are there plans for them since you took away the decision stacking?

Mongolia isn't being given special treatment there, pagans are:
Potential Requirements • Any owned province is Vajrayana
• Is not a subject nation
• Is in the Pagan religion group
Allow • Is at Peace
•Stability is at least 1
•Is not Tengri, or is Tengri with Vajrayana as the secondary faith

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Effects •Change religion to Vajrayana
• lose 4 Icon stability.png stability

Basically any pagan with a province in Vajrayana or Tengri synced to it can switch by decision.

...But wouldn't it just make more sense to re-create the Kingdom of Burgundy?
Nope, since the two kingdoms of Burgundy both went south instead of north. Lotharingia on the other hand fits much better with where Burgundy actually conquered land. Plus I might be mistaken, but as far as I am aware it was Lotharingia and not Burgundy the emperor planned on giving the duke of Burgundy before he fled during the night.

Could the Roman Empire get their own units sometime in the future? Tier 1 could be a take on lorica segmentata. I've been waiting for a formable Rome forever so thank you for putting that in

I don't have a problem with the Roman Empire decision, but I'd prefer it if adopting Roman culture was a separate decision. I can swallow a large empire styling itself as the new Roman, but the people of said empire wouldn't start speaking Latin and wearing togas... the Greeks (ERE) didn't.

Paradox should add a formable Atlantis. The Atlantean culture is already in the game, after all. It should be available to any country except for Shinto ones because we don't want to make that religion too interesting.
The required provinces are all sea zones, and thus unownable :p

Well, probably because Constantinople became the new capital of the Roman Empire, Greek became the dominant and main language, and naturally clothing choices would eventually move away from togas *shrugs*

Those are all vey valid ideas if the TAG is supposed to represent an entirely ananchronistic Roman state just plopped right into the contemporary era. But it really seems to be just a major enough power in Europe saying "We're big enough, we're Rome."

Greek already was a major language of commerce within the empire, and most wealthy citizens spoke it.

Yeah, I got side tracked with that. Essentially I was just replying to the point of "since they were a republic give them +RT if they are a republic instead of legitmacy". Then I overthought it and responded with a much more detailed and complex answer than I probably should have when I decided to go on the whole realistically tangent. I was also probably a bit overexcited with the Rome tag since I try to keep the ancient history stuff out of EU4. With the introduction of Rome I started nitpicking the ideas and etc... My bad.

Mongolia isn't being given special treatment there, pagans are:
Potential Requirements • Any owned province is Vajrayana
• Is not a subject nation
• Is in the Pagan religion group
Allow • Is at Peace
•Stability is at least 1
•Is not Tengri, or is Tengri with Vajrayana as the secondary faith

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Effects •Change religion to Vajrayana
• lose 4 Icon stability.png stability

Basically any pagan with a province in Vajrayana or Tengri synced to it can switch by decision.

Thanks for the clarification. I feel rather silly now between that and the long tangent I went on.

All in all, I'm just an idiot right now lol
