EU4 - Development Diary - 30th of May 2017

Good day all, Tuesday is ever a day for excitement as tensions and plotting surface in the office in the runup to another Dev Clash session. Today however feel free to tune in an hour earlier, as we'll be having a special wee stream for Third Rome itself.

For now though, we're going to talk about features available not only for Russians, but the Orthodox world at large: Metropolitans and Icons.

Patriarch Authority has been a game concept for Orthodox nations since time immemorial, or at least since release. While it's effects have been tweaked a little over the game's lifespan, sadly it has remained somewhat stale in that you wait for events to push it up or down. We've decided to revisit this mechanic to give it more life for Third Rome.

Patriarch Authority will still grant meaty bonuses to Unrest suppression, Missionary Strength and Manpower but it can now be spent to commission new Icons for your nation. Orthodox nations across the globe will be able to make a call against the longlasting effects of high Patriarch Authority against a strong temporary bonus granted from commissioning an Icon.

Icons.jpg

Commissioning an Icon will cost 10 Patriarch Authority and will grant that icon's bonuses for your nation for 20 years. You can at any time switch your Icon out for another at a cost of a further 10 PA, or just wait for them to run their course. Each Icon's effects are as follows:

Code:
            icon_michael = {
                discipline = 0.05
                manpower_recovery_speed = 0.1

            icon_eleusa = {
                global_unrest = -3
                harsh_treatment_cost = -0.25

            icon_pancreator = {
                development_cost = -0.10
                build_cost = -0.1

            icon_nicholas = {
                improve_relation_modifier = 0.25
                ae_impact = -0.1

            icon_climacus = {
                global_institution_spread = 0.25
                embracement_cost = -0.2

So a lot of flexibility is offered to the Ambitious Orthodox nation willing to part with some of their Patriarch Authority. Sources of Authority were, however, few and mercilessly random, so we have added a new State ability for followers of the Orthodox faith: Consecrate Metropolitan.

Metropolitan.jpg

In any well developed (30+) State where your religion is in all provinces and cultures are accepted, you can Consecrate a Metropolitan. This will permanently grant a reduction to Devastation at the cost of slightly increased State Maintenance, but when used will bestow +5 Patriarch Authority. Any Orthodox nation can do this, but it plays particularly well into the Tsardom's hands with their increased State limit, allowing them to have more Metropolitans and boost up their Patriarch Authority further.

Both Metropolitans and Icons are features of Third Rome, our upcoming Immersion Pack for EU4. Next week I want to go over some of the changes coming along with v1.22. See you then!

With a Russcovy that's occasionally (regularly?) eating the Ottoblob early in the game, are there plans to get rid of the 25% chance for Poland to throw the game by rejecting the free PU on Lithuania? A Muscovy/Russia that's that powerful should be quite capable of keeping the PLC in check most of the time, even if Prussia/Austria aren't in a position to push for a full partition.

Am I misremembering of wasn't that date picked to be right after the Danish national day due to Scandinavialism?

Kind of. The intent is said to have been that they be the same but it rained on the Danish day so they postponed.

Is it just me or do metropolitans seem... really underpowered?

A permanent 10% increase to maintenance for a 1 off (small) increase of PA and devestation reduction which really isn't that important. States that qualify to be metropolitans are probably going to be your main states and thus not likely to get much devestation in the first place...

At the moment I can't see it being worth it, though I can see why the devs wouldn't want a small monthly tick to PA as it could quickly become OP. Maybe instead of devastation reduction they could give development cost reduction? That way it could model particular states becoming larger urban areas centered around Kiev or Novgorod. Or you could give each relevant province in the state +1 building slots, again modelling the impact of an urban center on the region.

Since Russia is the focus of this immersion pack, PDX should take some inspiration from Hearts of Iron III and have all countries with a primary culture in the East Slavic group have their name on the map spelled out in faux Cyrillic:

MФSCФVЧ

TVЗЯ

PSKФV

ПФVGФЯФD

ЯЧДZДП

ЧДЯФSLДVL

As a native Russian speaker I don't know of Mfssfvch, Tv - three - ya (since it has a number in its name, it probably goes to the Cold War era), Rskfv, Pfvgfyafd, Yachdzdp or Chdyafsldvl.

Also it can work both ways. For example, England in Russian is Англия (reads /anglija/). Should Russian version of the game spell it as AHГЛNR to represent how they use Latin letters in ... what it became now... Ahglnr?

Why would commissioning an Icon 'reduce' Patriarch Authority?!
That makes no sense.

@DDRJake ???

Why would raising banners cause corruption, rather than raised banners giving way to corruption over time? As was the case?

Why would Banners not use Manpower? Where do the men come from?

The mechanics of these expansions are getting more and more ad hoc DDRJake.

Cheers for the DD, DDRJake :). Giving a bit more love to patriarch authority goes well, and these changes sound good - looking forward to giving it a play (just got to work out who as - I've already given Muscovy and Novgorod a run in EU4, and while I could play them again, that seems impolite to the other Russian states while they sit there neglected).

I don't often give a hard no to suggestions we see, but as long as I draw breath this will not happen for EU4.

In that case*, may you live a long and happy life :).

* You seem like a good bloke, so this would stand regardless of your position on faux Cyrillic, but it doesn't hurt the case, that's for sure!

How moddable will icons be? Will it be possible to mod in a new religion with Patriarchal Authority using a different set of icons along side Orthodox?

Yeah that works or simply remove the first of, so it reads as "Metropolitan State of
Except metropolitan is not an adjective here it's a person. It's not a metropolitan state, it is a person who is metropolitan of a state.

Am I misremembering of wasn't that date picked to be right after the Danish national day due to Scandinavialism?
Source on this?

Uh no. That would turn it into the adjective. Which would be wrong in this context.

Ahglnr?
So, out of curiosity, what are the actual Cyrillic spellings for the Russian states?

Also, can we please get unique NI's for Karelia?
