EU4 - Development Diary - 28th January 2016

Hello everyone, today we’ll start talking about 1.16 and what it will contain. The development team is busy working on 1.15.1 at the same time, which we hope is out ASAP.

One of the fun part of working on the Europa Universalis series over the last decade has been the constant evolvement of the map. Today we’re proud to announce some of the map changes for 1.16, with a quick look of Europe.

Ireland in Crusader Kings II is known as tutorial island, as an entire game in itself. In EU so far, ireland have not been properly represented, and more been shown as poor as it became after a long time of english rule. Now Ireland is richer in 1444, and not just a quick conquest for England within 5 years. Ireland also have 9 provinces, where it had five before, and several new interesting nations to play.

1hwBi0H.jpg

We’ve also tweaked the map to better borders and provinces in Hungary, and I hope you’ll enjoy this setup.
d8RKV3E.jpg

We also made a complete overhaul of how cultures work to remove the ties to language, and tie them more together to similar cultures, to create more historically plausible countries and relations.

DxJVBOu.jpg

Now, for some community fun, try to find as many changes on the map compared to 1.15 in this screenshot and list below!

mEHgjG4.jpg

Next week I’m back talking about a new concept that is getting in the game for 1.15, which can be seen in the topbar on these screenshoys.

Yes but usually it's over a central point of DD, culture overhaul is cool, but lets face it - it wont change much of anything from gameplay standpoint (except maybe turkosmetic affair but ottomans are op anyway).

"Belorussian" culture literally have 2 words "Belo" in Russian this word is "white" and "Russian". So I suppose they really can unite 2 words in one ;)
- well, belorussian is one word, and wikipedia knows it. South russian is two words, and here are no Southrussian in wikipedia.:D And i know what word "belo" means, look at my nickname more carefully.;)

Hungarian is a Uralic language, like Finnish, Permic, and Sami.

Hungarian culture in 1444 was quite distant from the culture of any of the other Uralic-speaking peoples.

That's true, and that is why in current version of game Hungarian is an isolated culture. There are other examples, like Manchurian language is Altaic, but it's in the Chinese culture group. Apparently, even in the current version of game, language is not the only consideration. But I do think that language is a very important factor in making these cultural groups.

Let's see how they will change these.

Hello!
As others have written this before me, Hungarian should go to the West Slavic culture group (alongside with the Slovak culture). I know Hungarians aren't slavs, but I think they are closer to Polish and Czech people in culture than to Romanians (or they were in the 15th century). Plus the developer said that language won't be the main reason for cultures and culture groups.

You realize Hungarians and Romanians not only hate each other but are completely different right? It would be more accurate to make a Central European group consisting of Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs and Croatians as these people were under the same country for hundreds of years and developed their core Catholic and Central European culture together. Romanians are Eastern Orthodox, this makes zero sense.

I would put Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Sorbian and Hungarian in one culture group.

Sorbian should be in Upper and Lower Lusatia, which should have a tag.

Silesian has never made sense to me. Breslau and Glogau were germanic and Ratibor was Polish in this time.

Romanian... It should be its own group. But that would really only work if it had more provinces, which it deserves.

Estonian and Uralic should be in the Scandinavian group (or Uralic could be in the Russian group).

Also we could really use an Arpitian French group for Savoy, Wallis, Vaud, and Lyonnais..

I still say it makes more sense to have Armenian and Georgian be in the Greek/Byzantine group.

West Switzerland/East France, Eastern Anatolia and Bulgaria are regions that could really use some border changing attention even after all this.

Poor Slovenian : (

Yeah makes more sense than putting Hungarian and Romanian together, then they might as well put French and Germans in the same culture group

@Johan so what are the odds that you will change Germany to Prussia's gray and Prussia to a nice dark Prussian Blue like in Vicky2?

Nonsence. There give me examples. We have a lot of same habits and same way of thinking.I don´t see why it is good for gameplay reasons.Even historically slovaks helped austrians agains hungarians when rebeled. Literally there is no reason why hungarians and slovaks should be in the same culture group.
There never was a Slovak state until 1993... Slovaks have been in the Kingdom of Hungary for over a thousand years. I'm pretty sure the culture is the same. Not to mention we both share culture with other central Europeans, yes Czechs, Austrians, Slovenians, and Croatians. This is the culture group we belong to, NOT in a group with Romanians.

Ireland looks nice, but its provinces have English names...

I believe that province name file changes are allowed in iron-man so it's really not an issue and very little work to "fix" on your own :) (I prefer english names, since I can pronounce those ;) )

Why should Ireland be exception?

Not really an exception. Lots of provinces in the Lithuania have followed the same path, for example Polotsk should be Polockas, Bratslav Breslauja and so on, given how the game primarily calls provinces how their overlord would call them. Peremyshl in Poland? Well, that makes sense, since neighbouring Lwiw is called proper Polish Lwów, Podolia IMHO is also "iffy", Serbia and Bosnia provinces being called Serbia and Bosnia...

And I'm sure - many more cases of Anglicization of the names for the sake of them being pronounceable for the average Joe the further east/south you go.

Srbija and Bosna are both labelled in BCMS, not English, on day one.

Sorry if this was already asked but why is Finnish in the Scandinavian group and Karelian in the Russian (East Slavic?) group? If I remember right those cultures were both distinct from their neighbor's at the time and in some respects now (especially the Sami culture which too is in the Scandinavian group now.).

If "culture groups" (kinda arbitrary IMO, but hey), are now defined based on historical geopolitical inclination, shouldn't that put Czech culture in the German culture group? For most of the past 1000 years, and certainly for the duration of EU4, Prague was considered German rather than Slavic. Similarly, wouldn't Lithuanian end up with Polish culture? The culture system is turning into a bit of a mess, come to think of it. Breton is French, Dutch is German, Flemish is German, Czech and Silesian aren't, Croatian provinces are Austrian, arbitrarily (see Goerz and Krain). It makes so little sense. Incidentally, I thought you were against putting Slovak culture in because it would be converted immediately? (Paraphrased) o_O

CUs are revamped to be based around historical progress of the game (I.E. 1444-1820) rather than cultural origins (???-1444).
