EU4 - Development Diary - 25th of October 2016

Hello everyone and welcome to another Europa Universalis IV development diary. This time we’ll go into the main flavor of the 1.19 patch, which we call Denmark.

Well, why do we call it Denmark? Well.. First of all, we’ve added lots and lots of Dynamic Historical Event to Denmark, bringing them up to par with other european majors. Skåne also starts with the Skånemarket, a large bonus to the fish produced in the province. We have also added a few new provinces in Jylland, while also increasing the development of Denmark as a whole.
eu4_52.png

And as you can see here, the Danes get a nice new unit in 1.19 as well..

eu4_51.png

Norway also got an improvement, getting their map revised to include a fair amount of new provinces, and a wasteland in the center of the mountain range, to make the country more easily defended against the vile swedes. We also gave them a huge chunk of new Dynamic Historical Events, making playing them a fair bit more interesting.
CvhMke2WEAA4Oxh.jpg large.jpg

We also improved the political mapmode, as so many had requested, so we now show the terrain map where there has been no colonisation yet, so you’ll have some more informative eye-candy while playing
eu4_54.png

One other thing to mention today is the fact that we added a fair bit more instructions to the AI for your nation if you crash or are forced to stop playing for a while in a campaign. The following options now exists for your convenience.

  • Ignore Decisions -Yes/No
  • Embrace Institutions - Yes/No
  • Develop Provinces - Yes/No
  • Disband Units - Yes/No
  • Change Fleet Missions - Yes/No
  • Send Missionaries - Yes/No
  • Convert Culture - Yes/No
  • Add/Remove Cultures - Yes/No
Stay tuned.. Next week we’ll talk more about forts, peace options and tradegoods, amongst other things.

Please, do make the political map wasteland terrain optional. I love how beautiful it looks, but I never use terrain because my computer doesn't handle it well, and I would like to continue playing and buying more doc for this game ;)

I agree 100%. Biggest concern is how will all this affect performance. It would be better if it is optional.

are you gona script evets for sweden and maby creat a special absoulute monarchy for sweden
Why would Sweden warrant a special absolute monarchy? All monarchies were different (including the absolute ones) and I don't see how Sweden warrants its own version. Though I might well be ignorant on that; hence why I'd like to see the arguments for it.

Awesome! I'm all for enriching the details in all regions of the world with additional provinces to make game more interesting. To date, I have not played Denmark but I frequently butt-headed with Denmark early on near the game's start as England over supporting Sweden's independence (a cause often jointly with my usual ally Scotland who naturally desired Orkney). I think with these changes to geography, it will make the war with Denmark-Norway more interesting.

Now that your doing a Denmark themed patch I think it be prime time to right a wrong that has existed within the game for far to long. The culture of Iceland! It is well know that Icelanders are not Norwegian, and at the time period they spoke a different(ish) language, had different customs and well a different culture. I believe Icelandic has a right to be its own culture just like other smaller cultures like Albanian and Sami.
I agree completely. Here is why...

UN Declaration of Human Rights 1st article in Icelandic
Hver maður er borinn frjáls og jafn öðrum að virðingu og réttindum. Menn eru gæddir vitsmunum og samvisku, og ber þeim að breyta bróðurlega hverjum við annan.
Recording

Same article in Nynorsk Norwegian (The closer one to Icelandic)
Alle menneske er fødde til fridom og med same menneskeverd og menneskerettar. Dei har fått fornuft og samvit og skal leve med kvarandre som brør.
Recording

Hard to point to the most significant date for when Icelandic and Norwegian diverged into such different languages. There has never been culture changed by event in EU4 like there is in CK2 and if it stays that way it would only make sense for Icelandic culture to be present on Iceland so that the Iceland tag could keep its cores.

That's great. If you can also add Change Religion Yes/No to that list, it would be perfect (for me). That really was a crappy run, when AI decided to change from Protestant to Reformed, even though I had a Protestant Center of Religion. :(

Denmark is a European major? How large was its transcontinental empire? Did it evolve into a 19th century great power? Did it bring any actual major to heel? How far did it spread Danish, how much did it influence the papacy or the HRE? Did it invent any major political, economic, or military tradition that changed Europe forever?

What a weird nation to focus on...

Oh boy it's the terrifying danskjävel and their tireless Norwegian cod mongers!(These are finnish stereotypes about both, it's a joke. Don't lynch me...)

Denmark and Norway way deserve the facelift.

As a Finnish Karelian I am happy for them even while I cry myself to sleep at night...speaking of which: Shouldn't Poland and/or Finland be vassals under the Russian Empire when their annexations happen?(1809 for the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland and Poland until 24 October 1795 when the full annexation happens).
Reason being that the 1809 peace and following swearing of fealties technically(as in de jure) established Finland as a constitutional monarcy as opposed to the absolutist monarchy of the Tzarist Russia. They did have a parlament(that rarely convened though), had their own institutions and kept many of their old laws and basically ran their own affairs.

In gameplay this could be represented as a personal union with Russia as the major(duh) and vassal Finland as minor. There would be some challenge in steering that one.
Then again you'd only have 12 years of gametime with that so perhaps it's not worth the trouble, even if it would be close to the history of it.

Also the Sapmi nation should have Animism as their state religion instead of Fetishist(since the Shamanism tag was used for the Fetishist and someone forgot to change the Sapmi tags history file...).

This DD is everything that I have ever dreamed of! Scandinavia was my favorite part of playing CK2 and leeing it get some love in EU4 is bringing a tear to my eye. However, I am concerned a little about Norway. From most games iv'e played, Norway tends to get cut up into little bite sized pieces by Sweden instead of just being taken as a whole like they often were historically. In CK2 such a concept was easier to grasp because the entirety of Norway could be represented as one Kingdom title up for grabs, however, EU4's formula is a little different. Are there going to be events like with Burgundy for Norwegian inheritance or maybe something similar?

Denmark was a major naval power during most of the time period of EU4, and did have colonies overseas in the Caribbean. Until Gustavus Adolphus took over as defender of the Protestant faith, that title was also held by Denmark. Not necessarily a great power in comparison to Spain, France, or Great Britain, but a strong regional power in Northern Europe and strong enough to be considered a threat navally.

To everyone complaining about the new look of the wastelands:
in the first screenshot you can clearly see that the "owned" (surrounded by one country) stays the same as it is now in the new mode, so at least the norwegian one shouldn't be a problem for you.

I am personally all for the new mapmode, though I think we should be able to turn it on/off.

So when eu4 and to a greater extent eu3 were first released, one of the selling points was that they relied less on historical events as drivers ala eu2. Are we seeing a return to more linear country play with these new updates? I personally have always preferred universal events with key words from localisation to give them flavor. While I trust you guys to do a solid job on these games as always, this does leave me wondering as to the future direction of one of my favorite games.

Cheers! - Lucius

Norway tends to get cut up into little bite sized pieces by Sweden instead of just being taken as a whole like they often were historically.
Actually Sweden did try to cut Norway into bite sizes historically. When they took Skåneland in the mid 1600s they also took Trøndelag; that was done specifically to isolate Northern Norway and make it ripe for easy conquest later on. Now Norway got Trøndelag back in 1660, but that doesn't change that Sweden actually tried to carve up Norway.
Are there going to be events like with Burgundy for Norwegian inheritance or maybe something similar?
What inheritance are you talking about? 1814?
Or do you mean Norway getting integrated into Denmark in 1536? If the latter then some kind of event, which probably should require protestantism and possibly also Sweden being independent, would be nice, since with more provinces to Norway there won't really be any chance of inheriting it for Denmark and integrating it will be expensive---and be a cost which wasn't there historically.
and did have colonies overseas in the Caribbean.
Indeed; what is the US Virgin Isles today (we sold our Caribbean colonies to the US in 1917). And in West Africa and India we had colonies too. (Something like 9 coastal colonies around what today is the coast of Ghana; and 2 Indian colonies. Trankebar and Frederiksnagore. Trankebar lies close to Madras and Frederiksnagore is part of Calcutta today IIRC. We also held the Nicobars due to discovering them, but IIRC they were never really settled.) Not much sure, but it was there. And we are something like the 8th biggest slave trader ever due to those African colonies.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvSdK7LWEAAz5vP.jpg take a closer look at Finland. Although I'm not sure which lines are rivers, which are states and which are province borders, I'm fairly certain that Rovaniemi is now split.
Appears you're right. Though it could be that the northern half is a wasteland, since that would be appropriate and like that Norwegan wasteland that's something people have been asking for for years. (A wasteland in what it northern Rovaniemi has been asked for at least since vanilla EU3.)

I really appreciate the new changes, and though I feel like a spoiled brat for saying this, I still think that there could be one or two provinces more - most importantly on the isles. @Wagonlitz is far more knowledgeable than me on this subject, and I think it's pretty clear that they've been inspired by his post regarding Danish provinces, but I still feel like tossing in my two cents.

I've suggested this before, but never really explained why I thought it would be a good idea.

The province of Helsingør/Hillerød, whatever you want to call it, would have the the crossing between Skåne and Sjælland and the Sound Toll. This might allow for another trading modifier to be added to Copenhagen, and a more realistic Sound Toll to be implemented, as has been suggested before. It would also add another fort, Kronborg, to siege down and defend Sjælland.

Copenhagen should be extremely hard to take, and always the very last province to fall, as it was a city within a fortress - no buildings, markets, etc. were allowed to be built outside the city walls. This would also mean that if the Swedes, or any other power for that matter, should manage to cross the Belts to Sjælland, they would be forced to dispatch some troops to keep Fyn, Lolland-Falster and Southern Sjælland occupied, which might go some way to represent partisans, snaphaner, friskytter, etc.

The provinces might look somewhat small, but they're actually just copied from a mod, though I can't remember which one.
