EU4 - Development Diary - 23rd of April 2019

Good day all. Today's a fairly brief Dev Diary, even by recent standards, as two of the five previous workdays were swallowed whole by Sweden's love for public holidays. To that end, I hope a good Easter day was had by all.

Last week I went over some Quality of Life suggestions that came up internally, and today I want to touch on one in particular detail. Again, these are not iron-clad promises of things to come. They are certainly improvements that we desire to make for the game, but or not that translates to being in our upcoming European Expansion and its accompanying update is for reality to dictate.

I mentioned at the end-of-year dev diary before that improving Custom Nation options was something we would like to achieve in said European release. Now a question that may come to mind is why this would be on the radar for our European expansion. Well Custom Nations remain one of the most popular choice for players. It has spent plenty of time as the number one choice in the past, although in the past months it has been playing second fiddle to France, see our handy nations chart:

Played Nations.jpg

No huge surprises here, except perhaps that England have fallen from grace, as they used to consistently be near the very top. These are most fun to observe when a release is done for a certain area, such as Rule Britannia, where England spiked like crazy.

What we see is that custom nations (D00 here) continue to stand the test of time, despite being added to the game with El Dorado back in February 2015. We have updated the designer with features as they have appeared, such as Consorts and ruler personalities, and updated the custom National Ideas as new modifiers have been added, but we feel there is still more that we can do.

In particular, myself and @Groogy have been looking at what we can do to boost the functionality of the custom nations feature, and something we both find lacking is that, while we have hundreds of sweet-looking unit models, there is no way to specify which ones your custom nation uses, leading to a fairly generic visual experience in battles. We may be dipping a bit into the HoI4 inspiration well with their way of previewing units for this.

unit previewer.jpg

In addition to a way to customize your unit models for your nation, I'd say we're due another pass of the available National Ideas for said custom nations. To the custom nation players out there, what would you really like to be able to tweak in your customized experience?

For those champing at the bit to see us move forward with development of the upcoming expansion, know that we are wrapping up this long period of tech debt. We have a couple more aspirations dev diaries to come, before we're likely going to return to our more regular dev diaries of showing off ongoing development.

it's there, in the game options before you start a new game, go in the "custom nation" options. There is a setting called "custom nation setup", choose Random nation and the world will be empty except the custom nations you create (up to 40 I think). It's compatible with RNW for maximum wackyness, but sadly you cannot randomize all the land masses. Or just randomize parts of the world.
eu4_5.png

(screenshot from the original dev diary)

Suggestion: add an hability to select where you want random nations or not. Maybe with a tool like the one you use to crate the nations, you clic to select where you want empty "random" space, with an option to change the scope to area or region to reduce clic fatigue.

Oh hey, that's cool. In that case I'll just add what I think would be neat to add to this feature.
- Total randomization, with cultures and religions changing along with the countries. It would be fun to see a world with Nahuatl in Europe and Totemist in Asia without having to use only custom nations. Ditto for cultures. (Although culture groups should probably be close together for the most part, maybe have an option for Total Random Cultures and Random Culture Groups?
- Ability to preview the world before playing, similar to the Random New World, so that you can reload if you don't like the seed that you got.
- Options to allow certain things to be in the game, for example "Enable the HRE" "Enable Emperor of China" "Enable Shogun (Where Japan would always be divided into daimyo's and a shogun)"
- In the same vein as above, have an option to allow those things to appear anywhere in the world, so now the HRE is in North America and the Emperor of China is actually the Emperor of West Africa! Also the Pope is in Indonesia.
- If you introduce CK2 religions, allow them to be included as a possibility for random nations. Nestorian Mali in South America anyone?
- In the same vein as above, who wants a Fraticelli Pope? Maybe at the same time as a Catholic one? (Assuming that doesn't break the game)
- Ability to enable a "High American" new world (Look, some of us actually liked Sunset Invasion)

Custom nations really need more flag and nation colours, flag backgrounds and especially more emblems!

You should also up the limit for custom nations. 75 nations are way to few when trying to create a custom world.

Also custom nations keep getting corrupted being a pain to remake.

Please fix that Paradox.

I agree. It does seem this problem usually occurs when playing with mods. I myself have over 500 saved custom nations and having to remake those will take the rest of my life. A fix for the corruption that usually works is to copy a set of the generic ideas and open the file of the custom nation and replace the ideas manually.

You should also up the limit for custom nations. 75 nations are way to few when trying to create a custom world.
Custom nation tags consist of the letter 'D' followed by two decimal digits, so you can (or at least, you should be able to) raise it to 100 with a mod.

Raising it past 100, on the other hand, requires the devs to either allocate a second letter to custom nations or extend the maximum length of tags. Both options are viable, but both options have drawbacks.

A thing I am noticing in this thread:

People thinking of every customization option they want, and asking for it to be stuffed into the deliberately-limited scope of the Custom Nation interface.

Instead of stepping back for a moment and thinking "hey, maybe what we actually want is a proper scenario editor".

I wish that custom nations wouldn't lose their claims after a while. I've had maps where I replaced the whole map with custom nations and at some point castille, france etc. get released because they have permanent claims and the custom nations don't. It's incredibly annoying if you have fantasy campaigns or just don't want to see the usual major powers.

A few suggestions I have (which may have already been said here):

-Since Norse is already available in the custom nation designer, go ahead and add the rest of the CK2 religions to the designer, if not in the starting scenario for some of them (you could definitely fit some Nestorian provinces in the Middle East and Asia, and if Persia can get a Zoroastrian province in 1444, it's surely not too much of a stretch to give Lithuania a Romuva province).
--Going off of this, though not strictly relating to custom nations, give the CK2 pagan religions the patron deity system from the Hindu and Norse religions with their respective gods.
-Give the ability to determine the religious/cultural makeup of each province in the custom nation if possible. This would allow greater RP in my opinion as the nation wouldn't just be homogenous religiously or culturally.
-I know this was said earlier, but give us the ability to edit preexisting nations. This would enhance even further our ability to create interesting alternate history scenarios using the designer as we could change preexisting tags to fit whatever scenario we're creating.
-If we get the ability to create custom religions, make it to where we can have those alongside preexisting ones as opposed to the random religions in CK2. This would allow for alternate scenarios with some familiar religions existing alongside new ones (or old ones depending on the scenario).

I feel late to the discussion but would in-session modification of client states be a relevant offshoot of a custom nations designer we could expect of this tinkering @DDRJake ?

My dream of making a Neo-Caesarion southern empire client state branching off my burgeoning post-basileus Byzantine empire over Egypt (he was Cleopatra's son after all) fell flat when they came out very plain, with the right arrangement of ideas a properly named ruler and grabbing the imperator roman unit set i might step closer to my goals.

There are like 6 reasons why i don't play custom nations:
1. I don't like generic models for my units
2. Empty mission tree is sad
3. No historical events like English war of roses and so.. make game of customs a bit boring
4. I feel like playing CN is too easy.. especially by how cheap is to take land and how easy is to get strong military ideas. People keep picking like 20% infantry combat power + 10% discipline... and maybe +20% morale.. cos why not! For normal nations even if they have strong military skills they have some drawbacks like.. Prussia needs to deal with Poland, Sweden need to get independence and is near angry Russia etc... Ideas of customs are so unbalanced it make them op.

Another example is .. i can make identical 4 province size countries with same setting... but one positioned in hungary.. and one positioned in venice area... guess who will get tons of gold with almost i supose same cost to create this nation.

5. Bugs. When i picked like Mamluck government but with not muslim religion it bugged somehow and i ended up without any profit of gov.. but it was allowed by nation designer. (not sure if these steps are 100% true)

6. Custom nations have no special naval doctrines nor exclusive buffs from era like Ottomans siege ability in Renaissance.

I personally would like not only more customization for Custom Nations, but also for client States and colonial nations. I'd love to be able to change my client state ideas to give them colonizers. I would also like the ability to manually form Colonial Nations outside of colonial regions (For Example I would like to form Cape Colony) or to be able to form client states outside your main continent

I would really love to see Custom Government Types in the game. A huge factor of my passion comes from the unique government types such as Mughals, Prussia and Russia already have. But I want to see more unique governments or be able to create my own type of government.
Like maybe an Holy Order Government where you can have "-25% War Score Cost vs. Other Religions" and "+2 Missionary Strength" or a Florentine Government where you can choose from several historic artists to give you unique bonuses like "Raphael: Construction Cost -10%" , "Leonardo: Tech Cost -10%" , "Machiavelli: Morale of Armies +10%" and so on. I really want to feel the unique ambitions and achievements these nations had.

Of course more customization would be welcomed when it comes to flags and such, however, I think it wouldn't be half bad of an idea to allow us to develop a province with the remaining points. Such as if I create a colonization based country for relaxed game in Cornwall, but don't want to expand into Britain more, but not waste all points, I could just develop more.

Only recently started playing EU4, and even more recently started following development. My question is: will we be able to purchase provinces directly, instead of waiting for the AI to sell them to us? If not, could all participating nations have a say in the peace conference, so France doesn't drag me into a war that gets my troops slaughtered, my country burned, and my economy wrecked, only to give me nothing in the peace deal?

Would it be possible to improve the random world mechanic? Maybe have custom religions and cultures like they have in CK2. Also, random world with random continents could be fun. So a RNW but the entire planet.
