EU4 - Development Diary - 22nd of August 2017

Good morning all, welcome to this week's dev diary for Europa Universalis IV.

Over the past 3 weeks our map aficionado @Trin Tragula has been sharing our latest handiwork over in The Near East, Anatolia, Caucasus and Iran. In addition, we also showed off five new trade goods being added to the game: Livestock, Paper, Gems, Incense and Glass. By popular request, I have a few screenshots to show the distribution of trade goods in our reworked map.

eu4_268.jpg

Arabia, complete with a coastline of Incense, while a lot of provinces previously aflock with wool enjoy livestock.

eu4_269.jpg

Timur's home has a wide variety of goods, with a handful of gem and paper provinces finding their place

eu4_270.jpg

Anatolia is seeing relatively small additions of new trade goods, but the city of world's desire now produces lucrative glassware.

eu4_271.jpg

Bonus European shot to bring Italy to light. The already wealthy region enjoying the prosperous goods of glass and Paper, each with their own set of events to alter their prices throughout time. Throughout the dev diaries, we may be showing off other regions where trade has touched, all depending on what people want to see.

These map changes and new trade goods will all be free additions to the 1.23 Update, which will accompany an as-of-yet unannounced expansion, meaning that whether you purchase the upcoming expansion or not, you can enjoy a revamped experience both on the map and in the pasture.

Today we're also talking about the first of the paid features from the expansion, Army Drilling. Currently in the game if you're not fighting and have no immediate threats or rebellions, you slam that military maintenance bar down as low as you can, leaving your armies to eat grass and dull their blades until such time that you pay them to fight for you again. With the addition of Army Drilling, you can pay to have your armies train so that when it comes to times of war or uprising, you can smack down on them with a far more effective force.

eu4_275.jpg

Any Army with a leader can Drill, during which their morale will be lowered and each non-mercenary unit will gain a Drill value. This value will directly correspond to better performance in battle. When not drilling, a unit's Drill will degrade over time, and will suffer if the unit is damaged and must reinforce.

Scaling up to 100, Army Drill gives:
  • +10% Shock Damage Dealt
  • +10% Fire Damage Dealt
  • -10% Shock Damage Received
  • -10% Fire Damage Received
(Army drill gives no effect for Mercenaries)

Drilling requires a leader, but during the Drilling process, your leader may also find themselves improving, and gaining additional pips, so not all is lost for that 0-0-1-0 General you roll. This likelihood depends on how much of your army they are drilling, relative to your forcelimit.

Drilling armies will cost full maintenance, regardless of the budget slider and will contribute well towards having a better, more professional army, less reliant on soldiers of fortune. Next week. We will explore this idea further.

will older saves be compatible? i dont wanna end a campaign just cause of this update
Since there will be new provinces, probably not
However, you probably have plenty of time remaining, and even if you don't finish on time you can revert to an older version via Steam

Shouldnt Mercenaries be stuck on 100% drill ? The main reason countries employed mercenaries in those times was beacuse they were a normal standibg and trained army as oposite to lacking peasants or men at arms . Also this would make players pick to have mercenaries armies standing all the time instead of disbanding them as soon as peace comes .
They weren't as disciplined as people make them be, they had a terrible reputation in the days of the Iron Duke...

My money's on Zoroastrianism getting some love. At the very least, I hope they give it a mechanic so there's an in-game reason to convert aside from achievement hunting.

I do want to see Judaism, Sikhism and Totemist get some attention at some point down the line, too. It's probably not happening this patch/DLC, though.
I think Shia need the love since they are the major Persian religion at this point. Zoroastrianism is not that strong at this point in time.

It'd probably be better to have some sort of "jewish influence" modifier or event chains.

Though I agree, jews not being represented at all is a bit odd.

The only issue I can see here is that to be historically accurate you'd have to include negative events and I'm pretty sure PDX doesn't want to get popular because they made a game where you can hunt jews.

And we know that's how people outside the playerbase would paraphrase it.

Does this text mean that Paper can appear in any province depending how the game plays out? What is the qualifying trigger for it? It seems like it will be pretty important when building Tall.
I hope the trigger for it is not just a random event but rather a trigger based on income and development of a province / a way of actively working towards it.

Paper Goods
  • Local Bonus: State Maintenance -10%
  • Strategic Bonus: Administrative Technology Cost -5%
  • Paper is a necessity for all types of advanced accounting, administration and diffusion of knowledge. This is a rare trade good that can be found mainly in Asia and Europe in 1444.
  • There are no provinces with local modifiers for paper production at start but some might appear during the game depending on how the game plays out (including but not limited to the existing event for the house of Elzevir).

@DDRJake Would you consider using this system to sets the maintenance and morale of a Conquistador army to full? That would allow players to explore the new world without paying their full army on the mainland ^^

I agree , there never was a "Jewish" province in Europe but some areas had more Jewish influence than other. Maybe have events like the Byzantium event that gives a boost if you accept them. Also Jewish people are not really an Ethnic group but rather a religious one since most Jews are Converts and thus have no historic connection to the biblical Israel/Judea or Biblical Jews. Their origin is in Khazaria a Turkic people and nation. Just facts.

I can't speak for the Polish provinces but they were a majority in Salonika/Thessaloniki for most of the period after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. Although that doesn't encompass the hinterland of the province of Macedonia, they could possibly be represented there (see here for an event chain I came up with concerning the Jews of Salonika and Sabbatai Sevi: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/sabbatai-zevi-event-for-the-ottomans.1040870/)

suggestion: each province has a flag over it, and capitals have a crown over it. make the flags better looking and actually wave not bend paper, crowns should be representing their government rank, duchy having a tiny low one, kingdom having a better one, and empire having amazing one

suggestion 2:
"The population of Prussia had 140,000 heads before the start of the conquest of the country by the Teutonic Order. Around 1400, the Prussian population in the Order was likely to have been equally strong, with about 103,000 Germans and about 27,000 Poles, especially in Kulmerland."
i live in east prussia area, yet there are no pruthenians in eu4. i even made a map of tribes.
baltic_tribes_at_the_12th_century_by_ratkabratka-dbgirnh.png

population structure of East Prussia in 1708:

228743-Prußen 33.8%

166312-German 24.6%

10599-Dutch, Scots, Huguenots, French 1.6%

142972-Lithuanians (residual value) 21.2%

127210-Masurians 18.8%

675836-Total 100%
----------------------
"It is especially important to point out his large-scale settlement work after the plague years in East Prussia, which was centrally directed by the state. At the same time, the king sent settlers from the Palatinate and Nassau to immigrate 2,000 Swiss and 17,000 Protestants who had been expelled from Salzburg for their faith in East Prussia. As a result, the East Prussian population rose by 160,000 people between 1713 and 1740 to around 600,000 inhabitants. The population of East Prussia grew into a state community, not least because of the personal attachment to their princely patrons from Germans of different tribes and foreigners, also Lithuanians. maybe the blue meter is discipline? and drilling increases the discipline?
Discipline also modifies morale damage.

If you're the kind of player who likes to calculate then it is just another modifier on top of other modifiers which is interacting with half these modifiers to make things unnecessary complicated.

In reality the difference is negligible enough to just calculate it as discpline though and the mechanic itself looks fun enough to warrant its own set.

Though I'm pretty sure they had a conversation like "but this is discipline!" "well... just take something out and un-discipline it."

OK, all that army drilling and stuff is a step in the right direction. May be real combat will also add something to unit experience? After all I remember that feature back in Victoria 1.
Something like an army having its development tree like in TW-Attila-Rome2 would also be a great addition.

Yes that would be a nice thing if they did. I doubt everyone would like it but I would very much pick it above the army system the game currently use. I would also like to see that economy become more important to your armies.

Currently armies and war in general feels very cheap compared to how expensive it was during the time period the game covers. I would like if the game encouraged other ways to increase your influence and power such as trade and diplomacy instead of encouraging war so much.

Like why not return the old center of trade concept used in previous EU games but in a new form so you can more actively build up your trade influence in different areas. It would also be cool to see new stuff added into the game such as early steam engines and the enclosure/agricultural revolution to add some new late game stuff.
