Hello everyone!

In this dev diary it is time for us to have a look at some of the artifacts that you may come across, steal or create yourself for your Royal Court. With the introduction of the new throne room scenes we are for the first time in Crusader Kings taking a step into the interiors of our courts. This has given us an opportunity to move artifacts from only being seen as 2D icons in an inventory screen like in CKII, to being visual 3D objects you can show off to increase the grandeur of your court, or give it your own flair.

Also, as always, the pictures in this dev diary are of work in progress.

Artifacts presented in your court

Within your court you will be able to show off the artifacts in your possession, from the smaller artifacts on pedestals and reliquaries holding the venerated remains of saints, to fine martial weapons forged or taken, to grand statues or fine furniture. These artifacts can be equipped in a number of slots around your court rooms for viewing of the ruler and his guests. Below is a small selection of the smaller artifacts, usually presented on different pedestals befitting your court.

DD69_tome.jpg

A Pratiharan volume about revelry.

DD69_reliquary.jpg

A reliquary containing a piece of the crown of thorns, you think.

DD69_urn.jpg

A fine urn taken from the Abbasid court.

DD69_ivory_box.jpg

A chest of valuables made in the finest of ivory

Designing artifacts of the middle ages

The artifacts we’ve added to the game cover a variety of different categories, small and large, and even to adorn your walls. The creation of these artifacts have gone through a few stages of development before making it into the Royal Court.

Research
As in all our games we go through a stage of historical reference hunting to find artifacts relevant to the time period and within the cultures we are depicting. This can be both easy at times and complicated at others depending on the amount of material that has survived the decay or been documented since the middle ages.

DD69_ivory_chest_references.jpg

Carved and painted Ivory chests.

During this stage we both look at the aesthetics and historical references we can find and verify. When references are sparse, we still try to extrapolate good looking and aesthetically plausible designs. However in some cases like in the Middle East and other areas there is for example close to no and at best sparse levels of statues or paintings of people. Depending on where this can be for religious or cultural reasons and in those cases where other cultures would show human statues, we’ve instead shifted to area appropriate symbolisms, patterns and art.
DD69_statue.jpg
DD69_birdie.jpg

A marble statue from southern Europe, and an islamic golden falcon.
Creation
While using reference images is an easy task to do, we must also consider the original state of the artifact, since a reference from today could be of a possibly 800 years or more old object. So grime, damage and aging needs to be reconsidered and balanced, while still keeping the object in a used looking state. An artifact could still be owned by a ruling family for long enough to become an antique in its own time.

DD69_cabinet.jpg

An icon clad cabinet, don't tell the iconoclasts!

Dynamic objects

Banners and some other items in the court have shader support to show the ruler's own flair, since they would be made to the ruler's specifications. The banners below for example read in the primary title held by the ruler to show off your heraldry.

DD69_banners_a.jpg
DD69_banners_b.jpg

What is a lord without his banner to display his Coat of Arms?
There are also tapestries, where we use a similar system to the clothing shaders to generate interesting patterns and designs to adorn those stone walls in your great halls.

DD69_tapestry_a.jpg
DD69_tapestry_b.jpg

Bringing some color to the hard stone walls in your halls.
And that brings this dev diary to an end, we will be showing off more of the courts in the future!

Yeah, but it's the same pool of money paying for person-hours spent on the two tasks.
Pretty sure the pool of money is already set by the company ages in advance and not related to particular DLC. Lots of other paradox games have had strange art additions to their DLC partly because it gave the artists something to do.

If you want them to hire more programmers than I'll have you know not only are they recruiting, they're desperatly recruiting according to the Imperator dev diaries. If anything they've already been shifting their devs around a lot in the last while to manage these shortages.

I'd argue there are definitely things the CEO could try to do to hire more programmers right away but afaik according to the devs I've messaged, the pandemic is a large part of why they aren't fully staffed to the degree they want. I think they're holding out for now and hoping for better days to come with hiring.

Regardless the people to be messaging with these complaints aren't the artists who are excelently using their time on some of the nicest paradox art to date. Better this than wasting time on massive portrait buttons like EU4. The best place to talk about this is on the Paradox General forum.

As a total outsider afaik they could do a better job shaping up internal company ethics standards, improve wages, and internationalize their teams better to help shore up their worker drought. The games industry is a total slave factory internationally with really brutal aspects to development and a very competitive talent market. All they can really do is try and shore up their internal practices and outshine the competition to attract more talent. I know they already do a lot of remote work, especially with the pandemic, but continuing that trend can really open up their employment pool.

@El Tyranos wanna jump in here? you've done the tests.
Now I'm not a shader guru, but I think that may already be doable? I know the units have the coat of arms passed to them already for instance and I know we use some colour data from them in the portraits too. So might be we have the info there already to do something fancy maybe?
Though I am not a super shader person so not 100% sure either way
Quoting you both for awareness: it is currently impossible to use the unit color picker in portraits, see. The frame and shader code analysis isn't of general interest, HLSL coders should get it.

But... for curious guys out there

1629235296961.png

instance index = 2212

1629235323732.png

instance index + PDXMESH_USER_DATA_OFFSET + data offset = 2.217

1629235357965.png

Line 2217 : those value return the right color in the test chamber...

1629235172031.png

There are 7 units, the color is repeated 7 times in the frame, then they never repeat again. In other frames, the values are different, so they are impossible to "catch" in order to write a new shader, leading to my suggestion above.

Would be nice to display banners taken from powerful enemies. Such as at Saint Louis des invalides in Paris still having the banners taken during Napoleonic campaigns. Not sure how historic it is in middle age though, but would be pretty cool.

Certainly the pandemic has been hard on many companies, but I'm not going to buy a substandard product just because times are tough. The game has its bright spots, but also a lot of deep-running flaws. The longer those go unaddressed in favor of paper-thin new mechanics and shiny graphics, the less likely I am to continue supporting the game and buying DLC.

About the artifacts inside the box, can you open the box to 'see' the actual artifact inside? I think it will be a nice touch

The 3D throne room is a neat add but I hope, as others have said, that it is not taking away from adding actual content to the game. I hope we see a lot more in this DLC soon given the price tag and the unusually long development time so far :) Throne room looks really good tho

The art of the throne room is only a very minor (though very visual) part of the DLC. The DLC adds a significant amount of new mechanics and content. Some will also come as a free addition, as is normal for them these days, but most of the usefulness of that free content will come through owning the DLC. And we haven't even seen specifics detailing all the court mechanics being added yet. The question really isn't whether or not the DLC adds a lot of content (it does), but whether the content added matters to you. If it does, then it's "a lot of content." If it doesn't, then it's "very little content." The actual content is the same, but how you view it will vary depending on whether or not you care about the content. For example, if a DLC added a ton of Republic content and you love playing as a Republic, you'll consider it to be a very good DLC with lots of good content. If you don't care about playing as a Republic, then the content will feel much less impressive as you'll only really experience it from the edges through whatever the AI does with it.

Could the statues be colourful? Gothic and medieval statues are only white and grey now because it's been centuries, at the time they were brightly coloured, tacky to modern eyes but gorgeous to medieval sentiments.
Colourful statues of saints would also make collecting them more fun.

Also add erotic artifacts.
Not 'erotic' perse but historical artifacts with erotic themes shouldn't be censored. For example many statues, books, tapestries, and paintings from the era had depictions of naked, silly, gorry, and sexual acts between people. It would be a shame to not add any of those just because of censorship in a pretty wild game that already shows breasts and gore regularly.
