CK3 Winter Teaser - Photo mode

CK3 Winter Teaser #1 - Photo mode

Salutations, I am Carlberg, the 3D environment art lead on CK3 and today we have a small teaser for that button you may have spotted down in the right corner on a lot of dev diaries. It is the button that will bring up the Photomode of the court, to make it easier to take memorable pictures of the events and happenings of your court! Along with this preview we also thought we’d show off some more artifacts in their natural habitat.

photomode_icon.png

The camera might not have been invented in the dark ages, but don’t we all want clean screenshots?.

We’ve been confident for quite some time that our players would want to take some pictures of what happens in their court, the interesting courtiers interacting or from finally seeing your rival and vassal arrive to bend the knee. So for that purpose the Photo mode will give everyone the ability to pick what camera is currently active out of a curated selection. Some of these are camera angles that you’ve seen depending on different interfaces and some camera angles only available in the photo mode.
photomode_Screen.png

photomode_Screen_Drop_Down.png

In the photo mode you can select cameras from a dropdown, turn off courtiers for decoration focused shots, or the UI to get a clean picture with no interface.

And following, here are a few more court shots taken with the photo mode.

Edit: We have been made aware of the flipped text of the banner, thanks for your keen eyes!

Trivia:
Did you know that the natural camera, camera obscura, is an optical effect that can occur in a dark room with a small hole for the entry of light. This light causes a projection of the outside to occur within the dark room and has been observed and mentioned in Chinese written texts as early as 400 bce.

We'll be back again next week with another teaser!

I agree, it is a bit more complex than that - but I wanted a reminder that it is more than "just a meme" and an important part of the whole design.

I am a strategy gamer. I like reading about medieval history. I would love a more simulationist, grand-strategy approach to the period in a Paradox game. But the simsification of the CK series makes it uniquely appealing to a non-GSG audience, broadening the company fan base. My wife (a gamer, favourite games include the Diablo series, Dark Souls, but also Stardew Valley) finds "map staring and doing accounting" to be rather boring. But she found CK (especially CK3) very enjoyable because of the character-driven aspect. She even said (long before the announcement of the DLC!) that she would prefer the game to be entirely focused on the events happening to the monarch in the court and outside it (similarly to the FTL events) without the map part, which for her felt "kinda forced".

I started having much more fun with CK after I approached it with a similar attitude. And for the economy and strategy itch - I hope the new Victoria game would be able to satisfy them.

Trying to appeal to people who don't like your product is why there's no music on MTV.

And if we're talking about what wives think of the game, mine has a special loathing for 'that game where you keep knocking up 16 year olds until they die in childbirth before they hit 30.' And she doesn't even know about any of the worse things you can do.

I just want to go on record saying that I think entirely too much effort is being put toward what looks like a tedious, mechanically underwhelming part of the game, and that most of that effort seems to be going toward making what is a glorified interface. Its as though they're absolutely running with the meme that this game is Medieval Sims.

I'm excited for the cultural update, but almost everything about the court system could not interest me less.
Have you ever played Medieval Sims? It is actually a pretty great game :) To that same point, I would actually prefer if they were to go more into that direction; introducing more immersive and roleplaying aspects into the game. Those are the reasons why I like CK3 more than other Paradox games since it allows more character-specific roleplaying control and feel for the game. This "interface" certainly brings in more immersion and makes the characters more personable in my opinion.

I think I would've been happier being able to generate scenes with my ruler and their family like the ones on the load-game screen. These are so far zoomed out that one ruler is likely indistinguishable from another, and we're just seeing the pre-made court room.

not trying to be nit-picky here but in the court the soldiers that are on the left side of the thrones are kind of far away and the ones on the right are closer to the queen's throne, will we be able to change that and make the soldier on the left closer or is that how they really did things back in those times? idk but it just kind of looks off lol

I see what you mean, the ruler's throne is centered and the guards flank that center point at the same distance, but the spouse's throne is off-center to the side of the ruler, and so is much closer to the guard on that side. I don't know about throne placement in medieval courts, but I think it would look more aesthetically pleasing if the thrones together were centered (so the centerline of the room would run between them), and thus the guards would stand in symmetry with the thrones.

I think you guys switch the royal court between Indians and Arabs.
The God name in Arabic is wrong , Hope you fix it.
Arabian Sultans were not sitting in the royal chair like that!

So, you are saying we are waiting year and a half for the DLC content which the CK3 desperately needs and one of the reasons of the delay is a photo mode? Really Paradox? Why? This whole visualization of the court was nonsense right from the beginning. You really should concentrate on creating meaningful GAMEPLAY content first. CK3 is a shallow game at this moment which really needs other things than some photo mode.

If you already have a 3D scene, then you already have cameras in place and it's a very "simple" matter to make a photo mode. I'm sure the extra time to do so was only a day or two if they focused only on that and not a mix of things, so this isn't really an issue. And the DLC does add gameplay options, such as cultures. The options may just not be what you want, but will be what others want. Just expect the game to need a few years before it's up to par and then not worry about what they do in the meantime and you'll be less frustrated.

Just wondering will we be able to disable the 3d view of the throne room? to improve performance if needed?
They've stated you can disable the animations and make it a static image that won't harm performance.

Looks like a movie or show, so forgive me for being incredibly skeptical about the historical accuracy.

Is this historical accuracy?
Caliph or Sultan was not sitting in the chair like that! chief of tribes sitting like that in the ground not Amir/Sultan/Caliph, No windows, Looks like a prison, Queen sitting in a very weird way, That ground tribes sitting thing it's an insult for sultans or caliphs.

Forgive my skepticism here, but when I search for "sultan's throne", I find a wide variety, including low couches similar to the ones in this image.

Some are taller chair like thrones, one is even a roman style curule chair.

So it appears there *is* historical precedent to these low couches.
