CK3: Tours and Tournaments - The Vision

Greetings!

Come one, come all! The grand tournament awaits your attendance - your steeds have been readied and your entourage assembled for the journey ahead! It’s time to show the world your graciousness as host and worth in the arena… but to get there, we’re better off routing our journey around the treacherous mountain passes of Stipon, as I hear they’ve been crawling with highwaymen since your, ahem, dalliance with Duke Andronikos’ wife during his son's wedding. Then there’s the matter of your unruly vassals: perhaps it’s time for a royal tour?

The life of a ruler was always active - there were many things to attend to, and most courts at the time were itinerant, roaming from place to place constantly. Tours and Tournaments aims to give rulers plenty of things to do, especially during times of peace, by introducing new systems of Travel and Grand Activities!

As mentioned in the Floorplan Dev Diary, we want to reinforce the connection between character and map - after all, the game is played on a beautiful medieval map, and no longer will the only time your ruler leaves the safety of their capital be when you’re at war. There’s an entire world out there to explore, filled with both great opportunities and adventurous obstacles.

By assembling an entourage, selecting options for your travel, and hiring a caravan master, you are ready to set out on the road and travel to activities across the world. The Travel system is an integral part of activities, with both the host and guests traveling to reach them - creating a stronger feeling of place as you see your route being plotted and your character moving directly on the map.

So what are these activities you can travel to, you ask? There’s plenty - firstly we’ve updated and revamped Feasts, Hunts, and Pilgrimages completely - the bread-and-butter of activities. There’s now a reason to hunt in a specific forest within your domain, as a ferocious wolf or legendary stag might have been spotted there - or a reason to hold a feast in a holding with leisure palaces, as you might need to impress a particularly unruly vassal. Pilgrimages will now be epic journeys, potentially taking years if you’re going far - making it necessary for a regent to rule in your stead. All activities have dedicated interfaces with easily-accessible information and beautiful art to set the scene.

Of course, there are Grand activities that are even more impactful - each of them different in their own magnificent way! They have Options and Intents which affect rewards and what type of content you might encounter. Our aim is to make each activity have a clear purpose and be interesting in its own right, therefore we chose to make Grand Tournaments, Grand Tours, and Grand Weddings - three vastly different activities with vastly different executions and purposes!

Grand Tournaments are where you go to test your mettle: spectacles to be announced far and wide, with rewards ranging from precious trinkets to fabulous prizes! Grand Tournaments aren’t only for martially-inclined characters - while there are contests such as melees and jousts, there are also more cerebral ones such as recitals or erudite board games. You can join your knights in slippery wrestling, eagle-eyed archery, dangerous horse racing, and vicious team melees - all clad in gleaming armor brandishing your coat of arms for the masses to see! Participating and winning in these contests will see your characters and knights grow in skill and receive prizes; living the life of a frequent tournament-goer is a valid path to take. Exploring the tournament Locale and choosing the right Intents might help you out in other ways as well, be it finding friends or dispatching rivals. If you’re in need of renown, hosting tournaments yourself will grow your standing significantly, as rulers from foreign realms come flocking to the fateful grounds, eager to compete!

Grand Tours see you assemble your entire court and set out to visit vassals in your realm - an activity commonly undertaken by medieval rulers. This is a way to assert your overlordship, while also enjoying the hospitality your vassals have to offer. There are various paths to take: Intimidation, Majesty, or Taxation, all affecting the rewards and opinions of your vassals. At its core, Tours are a tool for realm stability - and something a newly-ascended ruler should undertake quite early to avoid factions and revolts. You also get to choose between ways of approaching your vassals individually; you might want to tour the grounds, observe a cultural festival, or simply have a private dinner hosted for you.

Grand Weddings allow you to marry above your station… if you’re willing to pay the cost! They also provide ample opportunity for diplomatic shenanigans, such as impressing neighboring rulers into becoming vassals, forming hard-to-get alliances, or creating favorable matches for your children. Of course, these spectacles come with everything you’d expect out of a medieval ceremony - revelries, drama, and even a bedding ritual at the end. Or you can invite a group of mercenaries to color the halls crimson with the blood of the other House, should you desire it.

As some of you managed to cleverly figure out, there’s also a brand-new regency system where we’ve made sure that it’s both interesting to have and to be a regent. Loyal regents help you by dutifully fulfilling their Mandates, and being the regent of your liege gives you opportunities to (with varying degrees of bloodshed) seize the throne for yourself, should you be doing a “good” job.

There’s also a myriad of other changes which we’ll go into in future dev diaries - smaller systemic updates to buildings, knights, vassal opinions, and so on - all to support a more interesting and living map, where your choices matter more.

So take to the road, ruler - great opportunities await!

Wow, so this is the big expansion huh? I gotta say I feel fairly conflicted. If I'm totally honest, I like these additions and think they could possibly be quite enjoyable. I really wanted characters tied to the map, and hated the teleporting around thing. I just hope PDX also limits character interactions (like Seduction for example) to the locations your character is at. So that I, as the Duke of Burgundy can no longer seduce the Empress of Byzantium, as an example. I also hope eventually the Knight mechanics get tweaked so that anyone who meets an arbitrary Prowess rating is magically a Knight. I feel Knights should be more special, a reward for loyalty and duty fulfilled, and have being granted Knighthood give that person a "house" so their not lowborn anymore. With actual Loyalty stats for all Vassals instead of just opinion modifiers.

But also if I'm being totally honest, I feel fairly disappointed. I haven't touched this game since Iberia came out. Before that I hadn't touched it since RC came out. I find the game insufferably boring to play after like 2 characters. I'm not sure how much this Expansion is really gonna help with that. These seem like they'll get just as boring as everything else after a few hours.

Sigh....I just don't know anymore, I'm not really seeing anything that will solve the problem. Stellaris DLCs are the only ones that seem exciting. Guess I'll just go back over there.

It being optional isn't the problem here
I can't be certain but I think the Bloody Wedding event is not what it seems. I mentioned this in another thread but in one of the pictures you can see that they are planning a Bloody Wedding and they've inexplicably spent 200 gold on food, music, something else as entertainment for the wedding. Why would you spend money entertaining people you are planning on killing?

Edit: Per a thread on reddit it looks like the bloody wedding is what it says it is although access to it is restricted to a lifestyle perk.

If we get regencies and a revamped law system in the free patch, then I feel good about the development of CK3, because in that case we'll get what the developers promised - the revamped mechanics from CK2 in the patch and a something extra in the paid DLC. In that case, I'll gladly support them by buying the DLC just because of those free mechanics. And it also means I'll start trusting them more.

But the developers should significantly change the way they promote content, because they're not good at it. They are trying to hook us on content that many players find useless and unnecessary, thus irritating players, while the content that players want for a long time and that they are going to give us for free is barely mentioned. Promoting bloody wedding is on the level of cat-a-pult, I suppose it will be a rare event that maybe many players won't even see, but by promoting it in the very first DD, they just piss many players off. Not to mention the huge fail of letting us vote on the next event pack before we knew about the new content. I believe that now that we know that we'll get the regencies with the DLC, the outcome of the vote would have turned out very differently. If everything turns out the way it looks like it will, they're taking criticism pretty unnecessarily just because of their way of communicating with the player community.

Unless AI will overuse it and normal weddings will bear the threat of ending your game prematurely

Will the update be save game compatible
I would expect not. Patches accompanying major expansions tend to be hefty, and I wouldn't bet on any save games surviving them intact. I'd wrap up anything important in the next couple months, and maybe not start any major campaigns right before release.

Hey, I'm super excited for this release. Question about the mention of pilgrimages: does this mean that rulers undergoing a pilgrimage are using this travel system to pass through foreign lands, in addition to their own? Do rulers on the route get a chance to interact with the pilgrims? Asking as a Tocharian fan of the Taklamakan...

The Taklamakan, you say? Tocharians? Another player of exquisite taste, I see. It does sound as though you'd be making a pilgrimage through foreign lands - I doubt you'd normally own everything between your own capital and Jerusalem or Mecca to begin with, and I can't really see it working otherwise.

It does sound as though you'd be making a pilgrimage through foreign lands - I doubt you'd normally own everything between your own capital and Jerusalem or Mecca to begin with, and I can't really see it working otherwise.
Here's the real gem: at Loulan, you control one of the only passages connecting the Tarim Basin and Persia further west to Tibet and China. The others east at the Jade Gate are within your reach. Every pilgrim for whom that's relevant (like say, just as a purely hypothetical example, Sogdian Buddhists and Nestorian Christians) is now being funneled through your lands...

Not sure I've seen anything yet to suggest that characters will have a defined location and need to travel unless they are specifically participating in one of the new travel focused events like a tour or a tournament.

Sure, a character on a special royal tour of his realm will move around the map in real time, but would I be able to, for example, select my King at any given time and move him to a new holding in my demesne? If I ask my spymaster to discover secrets in someone else's court, will he have to travel to that court and remain there until his job is done? When I appoint a new councilor, will I see him travel from his castle to my castle and stay there until I fire him? If a character is marching with an army 1000 miles away, will he still get his wife pregnant at home? Can I choose to have my family come on campaign with me, as medieval rulers often did?

I think this update has potential, but I have a lot of questions still.
Yeah, that's exactly what I am wondering too.

Characters traveling and being more tied to the map is really cool, there's a lot of potentially interesting things that could emerge out of that mechanic alone. Regents are cool and are going to shake things up as well. That said, Royal Court was so awful that it makes sense people are on their guard about this expansion. This feels like a make-or-break DLC for a lot of CK3 players, hope PDX has all their ducks in a row.

If we get regencies and a revamped law system in the free patch, then I feel good about the development of CK3, because in that case we'll get what the developers promised - the revamped mechanics from CK2 in the patch and a something extra in the paid DLC. In that case, I'll gladly support them by buying the DLC just because of those free mechanics. And it also means I'll start trusting them more.

But the developers should significantly change the way they promote content, because they're not good at it. They are trying to hook us on content that many players find useless and unnecessary, thus irritating players, while the content that players want for a long time and that they are going to give us for free is barely mentioned. Promoting bloody wedding is on the level of cat-a-pult, I suppose it will be a rare event that maybe many players won't even see, but by promoting it in the very first DD, they just piss many players off. Not to mention the huge fail of letting us vote on the next event pack before we knew about the new content. I believe that now that we know that we'll get the regencies with the DLC, the outcome of the vote would have turned out very differently. If everything turns out the way it looks like it will, they're taking criticism pretty unnecessarily just because of their way of communicating with the player community.
Did they say that they are updating the law system? I would love to read about that.

I think this update has potential, but I have a lot of questions still.
My guess is that this will be a a half backed system much like Royal Courts, so your spymaster will still be present in your capital even when investigating a foreign court. And don't event think about your Marshal traveling to the unruly county you just conquered to quell unrest, she is still comfortable at home at your capital with her pointless -10 opinion or +6 court grandeur event at court.

Come one, come all! The grand tournament awaits your attendance - your steeds have been readied and your entourage assembled for the journey ahead! It’s time to show the world your graciousness as host and worth in the arena… but to get there, we’re better off routing our journey around the treacherous mountain passes of Stipon, as I hear they’ve been crawling with highwaymen since your, ahem, dalliance with Duke Andronikos’ wife during his son's wedding. Then there’s the matter of your unruly vassals: perhaps it’s time for a royal tour?

The life of a ruler was always active - there were many things to attend to, and most courts at the time were itinerant, roaming from place to place constantly. Tours and Tournaments aims to give rulers plenty of things to do, especially during times of peace, by introducing new systems of Travel and Grand Activities!

As mentioned in the Floorplan Dev Diary, we want to reinforce the connection between character and map - after all, the game is played on a beautiful medieval map, and no longer will the only time your ruler leaves the safety of their capital be when you’re at war. There’s an entire world out there to explore, filled with both great opportunities and adventurous obstacles.

By assembling an entourage, selecting options for your travel, and hiring a caravan master, you are ready to set out on the road and travel to activities across the world. The Travel system is an integral part of activities, with both the host and guests traveling to reach them - creating a stronger feeling of place as you see your route being plotted and your character moving directly on the map.

So what are these activities you can travel to, you ask? There’s plenty - firstly we’ve updated and revamped Feasts, Hunts, and Pilgrimages completely - the bread-and-butter of activities. There’s now a reason to hunt in a specific forest within your domain, as a ferocious wolf or legendary stag might have been spotted there - or a reason to hold a feast in a holding with leisure palaces, as you might need to impress a particularly unruly vassal. Pilgrimages will now be epic journeys, potentially taking years if you’re going far - making it necessary for a regent to rule in your stead. All activities have dedicated interfaces with easily-accessible information and beautiful art to set the scene.

Of course, there are Grand activities that are even more impactful - each of them different in their own magnificent way! They have Options and Intents which affect rewards and what type of content you might encounter. Our aim is to make each activity have a clear purpose and be interesting in its own right, therefore we chose to make Grand Tournaments, Grand Tours, and Grand Weddings - three vastly different activities with vastly different executions and purposes!View attachment 953919

Grand Tournaments are where you go to test your mettle: spectacles to be announced far and wide, with rewards ranging from precious trinkets to fabulous prizes! Grand Tournaments aren’t only for martially-inclined characters - while there are contests such as melees and jousts, there are also more cerebral ones such as recitals or erudite board games. You can join your knights in slippery wrestling, eagle-eyed archery, dangerous horse racing, and vicious team melees - all clad in gleaming armor brandishing your coat of arms for the masses to see! Participating and winning in these contests will see your characters and knights grow in skill and receive prizes; living the life of a frequent tournament-goer is a valid path to take. Exploring the tournament Locale and choosing the right Intents might help you out in other ways as well, be it finding friends or dispatching rivals. If you’re in need of renown, hosting tournaments yourself will grow your standing significantly, as rulers from foreign realms come flocking to the fateful grounds, eager to compete!

Grand Tours see you assemble your entire court and set out to visit vassals in your realm - an activity commonly undertaken by medieval rulers. This is a way to assert your overlordship, while also enjoying the hospitality your vassals have to offer. There are various paths to take: Intimidation, Majesty, or Taxation, all affecting the rewards and opinions of your vassals. At its core, Tours are a tool for realm stability - and something a newly-ascended ruler should undertake quite early to avoid factions and revolts. You also get to choose between ways of approaching your vassals individually; you might want to tour the grounds, observe a cultural festival, or simply have a private dinner hosted for you.

Grand Weddings allow you to marry above your station… if you’re willing to pay the cost! They also provide ample opportunity for diplomatic shenanigans, such as impressing neighboring rulers into becoming vassals, forming hard-to-get alliances, or creating favorable matches for your children. Of course, these spectacles come with everything you’d expect out of a medieval ceremony - revelries, drama, and even a bedding ritual at the end. Or you can invite a group of mercenaries to color the halls crimson with the blood of the other House, should you desire it.

As some of you managed to cleverly figure out, there’s also a brand-new regency system where we’ve made sure that it’s both interesting to have and to be a regent. Loyal regents help you by dutifully fulfilling their Mandates, and being the regent of your liege gives you opportunities to (with varying degrees of bloodshed) seize the throne for yourself, should you be doing a “good” job.

There’s also a myriad of other changes which we’ll go into in future dev diaries - smaller systemic updates to buildings, knights, vassal opinions, and so on - all to support a more interesting and living map, where your choices matter more.

So take to the road, ruler - great opportunities await!

The issue is that CK3 is neither deep nor wide
True, but three years into it's development, Ck2 wasn't wide either. It only became wide after conclave, plus it had an easier bar to climb over, Crusader Kings (the original). A game in which you could only play a Christain, and only from 1066 to 1452.
Then let's forget that base game release CK3 included the ability to play as pagans, muslims, in India, play as Jews, play as Nomads, and start in 867. All in the base game. The meat of six DLC's all in the base game on release. Take out those six DLC and CK2 isn't very wide. Three years into it's dev cycle, they were just getting Nomad DLC. No Monks, no Jade, no reapers due, no holy fury, none of the damn DLCs that really made CK2 what it was.

absolutely true. Which is hilarious. God forbid we get any content or mechanics that are remotely supernatural, but presenting a highly fictionalised and romantasised middle ages is dandy.

But what about coronations?
Tours & Tournaments might be laying the groundwork for coronation processions in a later dlc.

With travel time, they can develop pathing for character movement. And the Entourage and Caravan Master mechanics could be used as a basis for Orders of Precedence.

Since Royal Court, they are basically required to represent coronations visually in the throne room or cathedral.

What in the world do you mean? This DLC screams historical attention to detail. A good liege travelled a lot, especially to areas close to his distant vassals. Tournaments are historical, travelling to hunts and feasts are historical, doing pilgrimages are historical, and the new armours are historical. And we have a lot of non-Scottish examples of murders associated with deceptive celebrations in the period. I do not see your point.
