CK3 Dev Diary #82 - Court Type Content

Howdy, y'all!

Once again shadow posting for our wonderful Dev, CC! Who could this mysterious figure be who I am ghostwriting for? We may never know the answer to that. However, we do know that the info from today will be quite interesting for those of you following along with Royal Court updates and information!

Without further ado, may I present:

Court Type Events:
Hello and welcome to another Dev Diary. We talked about the Court Types system last week, and continuing on that, this week we’ll showcase the different types of content you might experience depending on your chosen court type!

1.png

[image showing a petition court event about an offensive monument; more common in diplomatic or administrative courts]

2.png

[image showing a petition court event about funding a cadastre; more common in administrative courts]

If your court is known as a place of learning, then you can expect events concerning scholarly matters to be more common. If it’s a place famed for its administrative nature, then events related to that will be more frequent.

These “court event weighings” don’t eliminate events from the pool, they just alter their “weights.” It’s not just petition events that are affected either, but the court events too.
3.png

[image showing court event about reselling a neighbouring country’s fashion; more common in diplomatic courts]

And if you think that the events are limited to the court room alone, nay nay. We’ve added court type weighted events outside of court as well. Nothing is sacred, nowhere is safe.
4.png

[image of event where an academic disagreement is happening; more common in scholarly courts]

Likewise, some new content is based off of your grandeur level and even your amenities. For instance, if your lodgings are low enough that you’re struggling to house everyone, that does give a _rather_ convenient excuse to evict guests and other scroungers from a cramped castle.
5.png

[order mass eviction decision]
6.png

[order mass eviction event]

On the inverse side of things, having so many rooms that you don’t know what to do with them gives a bit of uhhh… space for experimentation.

7.png

[exoticise a grand hall decision]

Redecorating in the style of a glamorous court is a bit on the nose, but not a bad way to crank up your own court’s grandeur.

8.png

[exoticise a grand hall event]

Of course, for the _rustic_ look, you could redecorate after a less-than-fashionable court...

9.png

[exoticise a grand hall event, less grand court tooltip]

And, to round off, rulers whose courts lack grandeur that are willing to hold their nose a little can even burn some of their remaining dignity in exchange for skilled staff, rounding out their courts with experience even without pedigree.

Looks good. But I urge you - make more events. However many events you've made, make more. They are the lifeblood of the game.

Just for reference, Old World has over 3,000 narrative events. I know it's much easier to do events for a turn-based game, but at least consider how you can make multiple variants of similar events (like the children education events). That will increase the count and therefore the variety you get in each game.
I'm hoping that, while they work out bugs and whatnot, the writers are working in cranking out more content, ie events. If this results in more and better content, I'll honestly be kinda glad for the delay lol

I think it would make sense if sick people weren't in the courtroom, they'd be in bed. Either that or they'd dress up correctly.

Heh before release of CK3 people were actively saying they wanted less events, if you can believe that. I guess it got in the way of map painting or something . This game definitely needs more events.

CK3 dev diaries don't show up on the front page or on the 'trending' list. But I found it anyway!

I agree that these court pictures look much better! But could still be improved. In the one event picture there is the court room behind the character, with the throne up on a raised diaz. That's a 2d picture for an event and it looks really good; but the 3d court doesn't look as good as that. It's still just a chair near a wall. Please please raise the throne up so it looks more like a throne and not like a random chair! (if it's not too late).

I really liked the content being shown here though. I do hope that there are lots of events and that they don't get stale fast. And like somebody said up above, I hope the weighting isn't too heavy and that it's still common to get events from other court types.

EDIT: Oh, and could we by any chance get a gif or short clip of the animation when looking at the court? Pretty please?

I don't want to be flooded by events every moment. But I do want variety of events so I don't see the same event often.

I think one can want both more variety and smaller frequency. Like, there should be more events in the pool, but some feel they should've fired less frequently (so each playthrough has less).

My personal opinion: Having fewer events is better than having more *bad* events, and I think a lot of events in CK2 were pretty bad and/or added nothing interesting to the game. While I agree that more variety in events is a good thing, I hope that they keep up the quality of CK3 events, which for the most part have been *much* better than in CK2.

Looks good, though a couple thoughts... I'm not sure that using modern slang words really fits with the rest of the game. Ain't is very modern (I believe only 40 or so years old) and for me is jarring to see in this context. If you guys want it there to highlight someone using slang with the idea that even though the slang is modern, it's just a replacement for ancient slang that we might not understand today, it's fine, but it's still jarring to me.

Also, it really doesn't make much sense to me that you gain prestige for decorating your court like a "less-than-fashionable court". I understand from a gameplay standpoint that you are giving something in return for lowering your court's standards as opposed to paying to increase the standards, but prestige just seems weird in this instance. Why would it make me more prestigious to have a court that isn't fashionable as opposed to a court that is fashionable? I'd expect to gain prestige from the latter rather than the former. I know we're using grandeur now for the courts and so you could say that you'll maybe get more grandeur for a fashionable court, but prestige is still how someone views you and it seems that if you have a court that isn't fashionable, they'd view you worse than if you had one that is fashionable.

Nice, but shadows and less electric lighting feel, more natural light source atmosphere.
There should be a warmer sunlight in indian and Mediterranean courts for example than the western or whatever Scandinavians and Brits get f.eks.

Details. But atmospheric details.

Good job.

"Ain't" is over 300 years old and is definitely not some new slang. The idea that "ain't" isn't "correct language" is what's modern.

"ain't" is older than that (https://www.etymonline.com/word/ain't#etymonline_v_8076), but I agree it feels very out of place. I think it's just a term that has strong associations with certain time periods, and the middle ages isn't one of them.

Off by a few centuries there, dates back to the 18th century. Still anachronistic though, so your point still stands. I found it jarring as well.

The game is not actually written or played in languages that were current at the time it's set, though. Our whole perception of what counts as 'realistic' in this context is itself a modern cultural construct.
